ERA 1.8 bug

So I got era 1.8 (era2 won't work because I havent got SOD, only WoG (Ive tried it (and thata could be the whole problem))) and I load up one of my old saved games and it says 'warning this game save is from an older version' it says something similar but the game starts, however God forbid me saving it bacause then itll crash next time I load it... it's all normal when I go on new game and save that, it only seems to have a problem with the old saves. I can see where it's coming from, but seriously? This is either me doing something wrong/not doing anything or a horrible, horrible bug! Any help?

This probably won't be helpful because it is hard to understand exactly what is going on in someone else's system, but a few thoughts:

1) Era uses a variety of WoG 3.59 whereas "WoG" (i.e., h3wog.exe) uses WoG 3.58(f).  The WoG version is stored in a map and saved game, which causes the error message.  WoG 3.59 is mostly an extension (addition) to WoG 3.58f, so chances are if you hex-edited a WoG saved game and changed "358" to "359" somewhere at the beginning of the file (after uncompressing the file from the gzip format), and then re-zipped it, it would probably run under h3era.exe or Era1.8.exe.

2) At one time I successfully installed Era 1.8 over a WoG installation, and when I was done I still had the old h3wog.exe in the folder.  If you also still have h3wog.exe, run that to play saved WoG games.

3) If not, the best thing to do is to start with a SoD or Heroes 3 Complete installation, copy the whole folder, then install WoG in the copy.  Then copy the original folder again and install Era 2 in the second copy.  Then play old WoG saved games in the WoG folder, and new Era mods in the Era folder.  I currently have about eight different Heroes 3/WoG/Era folders on my hard drive - hard drive space is cheap and plentiful, these days.  (I also have three H3/WoG folders backed up on a 8 GB flash drive.)
