Xerox, I agree with what you say...
NEGATIVES:
The magic system:
Now you can choose whatever you want....the important heroes formula was that you had to see what your magic guild offered as spells and work around this building your hero accordingly...it should be "Wow! You had lightning bolt in your guild so went expert air magic, good one!" instead of "Okay, boring, you went for expert air and lightning bolt, what great skill you have (not)..."
It's not that the spells look unimpressive, it's the ease of getting them through the new skill system that dull's their affect on the battlefield...
And healing spells are a no-no, the heroes formula has always been about minimising troop loss by being clever in battlefield execution, now it's like "Wow, you used mass healing, you are so good (not)"
The UI:
Windows are a no-go (town, hero screen, etc.)....it should always be full screen like it's always been
Resources:
Boring with 3 resources. Everything is easy now. In the past you had to plan properly and strategize....for example you want to focus on a certain troop growth (due to hero specialitiy or whatever) and realize their building requires sulphur and mercury, so your focus would be to collect those resources/mines, making for a specialized, non-repetative gaming experience.
But I do think there are some positives about Heroes 6:
POSITIVES:
Creature abilities:
Most of them have clever and well thought abilites
I like the Vestals with pacification (enemy cannot act for two turns).
I like the Cyclops with Impervious to pain (damage only taken at beginning of next turn)
Reputation:
Good introduction to the series with this and like the affect it has on skills/abilities/magic....this is where the depth of the skill system can be implemented, and where strategic thought is required...
Graphics:
Best ever, the surroundings, underground dark feeling, the battles, puppetworks did a good job on the creature animations....
Navigation:
Best ever, one can do things quickly: building, recruiting, shortcuts for spells on battlefield and adventure map, etc. everything is quicker and well-oiled I find....
