Support Heroes?
So there are a few heroes that are quite popular for leading your main armies. This is obvious. But Crag Hack can't do everything by himself! So this is a thread about what heroes you like to use for the "less glorious" tasks - scouting, running, garrisoning key towns, hit-and-run strikes, etc.
The obvious answer is "Whichever ones are in the tavern" but assume, for argument's sake, that you had a choice of any heroes to run your errands for you. Which would you choose, and why?

I always smiled when i saw income (estates/+350g/+resource) guy show up in the tavern. They make nice secondary heroes, especially on poorer maps.

I rarely buy heroes from the taverns.
If I do need another hero, I'll get him from a prison.
Here is why you should get them from the taverns and why you should get them from prisons:
Taverns: Gives you a little boost if you hire a hero right before an attack at your town.
You know what hero you get when you hire him.
Heroes from taverns start at lvl 1, so you can teach him useful skills (not like navigation on no-water maps which you can get from prison heroes).
If you defeat an enemy hero, there is a chance that he'll be in the tavern which is great because you can hire him to serve you.
Prison:
The heroes are free and leveled up.
Most of them have useful skills like Estates or Logistics which are great for support heroes.
You can get a lvl 20 hero from a prison.
Sorry if something is wrong here because I'm not a pro player.

Heroes with scouting, estates, scholar are obviously good supports, since those are great skills, but you don't really want them on your main hero.
Heroes with nice starting spells (iE the zombie specialist with haste) can also be useful, if you have a scholar to teach them and don't have them in your mage guild.
Mobile heroes (pathfinding, logistics) are nice for chaining.
Magic heroes with solid knowledge/spellpower can clear out smaller wandering stacks.
If you are lucky to find TP in your guild, you can level a magic hero up to adv earth/wisdom to let him do "supply runs".
And the Gold/resource-specialists are great as well.
So you can use basically every hero as support, they all have their benefits.

You never buy heroes out of tavern?
It saves a lot of time to use support heroes, so your main doesn't have to pick up every pile of wood by himself...
And only relying on prisons doesn't sound like a great idea to me, they are very rare...

They aren't rare if you play random XL maps.
Not to mention the underground.

Yep. I love +350g heroes, especially Caitlin, who I believe has a very high chance of getting Estates as well. I like to put them on collection duty - have them going around to dwellings picking up the creatures there, which their extra income can usually pay for.
The right resource hero for the right town can work wonders as well, especially Stronghold, who need an abundance of Crystal but don't get it from their resource silo.

Personal preferences:
Main Hero: Diplomacy
Secondary hero: Scholar
Additional Heroes: Tactics and Archery (if it's an XL map, ideally these will be the guys guarding the town while the main and secondary are exploring the world.
Mapped resources and creatures only regenerate once a week, so I don't really find it necessary to hire a logistics or pathfinding hero to go grab 'em. The slower-pokes may take an extra day or two, but they eventually get the job done.
