Should i get HVI?

Hello, i am a HoMM fan and would like to buy the game but i wanted to ask you, is heroes VI worth buying? or should i go for heroes V?
I watched some videos of heroes VI and i was disappointed, a lot of eye candy but it seems like another game, while heroes V is more in the line of the originals.
So to resume it, what would you buy hVI or hV?
Thank you very much

Edit: i forgot, how good is the AI in this game? is it better then hV+ eternal essence patch?

Right now, H6 feels incomplete and the balance still has a long way to go. I'd suggest going for H5 tribes of the east, it is a much more complete and fun experience. That said I wouldn't go as far to say that H6 feels like a different game, yes there are some key changes but otherwise it pretty much plays like before. The main differences are the unit tier system(core, elite, champion - meaning that first 3 units are of a similar strength though each has a specific role to play in battle), the rare resource reduction that forces you to constantly be on the lookout for crystals, towns/dwellings can be converted to your own faction, the skill system that is not random anymore(but unfortunately is uniform for all factions other than some magic school and might/magic restrictions - also it lacks the tree branches that H5 had) and the area of control which requires that you capture a town/fort to control the mines/dwellings in an area.

Different people will tell you different things about the gameplay part, all of which subjective, so you'll have to make up your mind yourself (I personally think that the game has tons of wasted potential and is currently among the worst in the series in many regards). However, before you seriously consider buying it, think if you want to deal with an on-line DRM. The Ubisoft servers tend to go down pretty often which means no on-line multi-player among other things (there's no other way to play MP for the time being - save hot-seat - so it's either their servers or nothing). The off-line mode on the other hand still lacks many features to make it really convenient.

I'd say go for H5 + Tribes Of The East all the way. You get so much better gameplay with that game.

I saw it in the steam summer sale last weekend i think.
It costed 15-20 euro's max, for that money even if you dont like the game it is no big deal.

You are asking three questions tho of wich i will answer two.

1: Is Heroes VI worth buying.

I think it is, some of the areas might be poorly polished but we are talking about a game that has had no expansions. For me well i enyoyed the campaign, dont expect a super intiguing plot with unexpected twists or the most exelent maps. But non the less i enyoyed myself with it(not in a perverted way mind you).

Compared to the old heroes it brings alot of new changes that might alienate you from the series or make it refreshing for you. I will name some.

- Town conversion
You can change captured towns to the town you   chose to play as.

- Tier system is changed
instead of 7 tiers of units you will have 3
3 Core creatures 3 Elite Creatures and 1 Champion creature (all with upgrades) I think this is the best feature seeing as it keeps all units usefull.

-Shared creature pool
You dont have to transport units from one town to another when you buy them they are avaiable everywhere.

-Beefy armies
In the old heroes battles were decided mostly in the first turn, Your end game battle would be decided in the first 4-5 moves due to armies taking so many losses. In this heroes your armies live longer and you have longer battles

-Hero avaiablility

Now in the old heroes you had certain heroes wich had a certain ability. Now you start out with a few heroes (1-2)per faction and you have to create your own heroes and decide the abilities in the main menu so you can choose to play with them

Tears - Blood
Now you will hear alot about Tears or blood, using certain skills give you tear points others give you blood points. if you reach enough tear or blood points you rank up and gain some perks that compliment that playstyle. Dont pay to much attention to this as it is not as much of an impact.

Artifacts.

You still haev artifacts, Besides weapons You now gain dynasty weapons, you can find these in the campaign or you can buy these with points you gain from achievements accomplished in the game.
After you have unlocked them you can level these Dynasty weapons by using them in battle, after using them enough they can level up permanently allowing you to unlock new abilities for that weapon.

If you find these changes okay you should consider buying heroes VI if you hate them all, obviously dont buy it.

2: Heroes V or VI

Well heroes V has gotten all the attention and care it needed wheras Heroes VI has not. They have only begun patching H6 and not yet released an expansion right now more people prefer H V instead of H VI because it is much more polished, balanced and complete with sim-turns and plenty of mods to pick from. Heroes V is pretty damn awesome but from what i hear you already own it.

So most likely you would go for H V, but once you get bored of H V and want something refreshing dont be afraid to pick up H VI.

3: AI

I have no idea, i am unfamilliar with that patch

TotE with EE mod is the way to go. AI is superior. Even more when the long awaited update for EE will be released.

It strange that for being a HoMM fan you were holding so long with playing Heroes 6 . There's a demo for H6 to try, and the Tribes of the East is like 3 year on the market... but probably you had your reasons...

There are different opinions about H5 and H6. Personally, in my opinion Heroes 5 is the worst game from the whole series. Why is that? I mean it has nice visuals and art style, an interesting skill tree, many creatures and alternative upgrades. It's all nice, but there's one drawback which kept me from coming back to the game - it's battle initiative system. I absolutely hate it. I hate how some units can hit you three times until slow units even make a move. Spells like haste are unclear and useless(in other HoMM games it simply made your units go faster then the enemies, in H5 even if you increase initiative of your slow units it still doesn't change the fact that some units will move faster). Fighting with Inferno and their luck was an absolute pain in the ass. I think this system is not suited for a tactical strategy game, because it's too random. Nevertheless it completely ruined my experience with Heroes 5, and although I've beaten every campaign I didn't go back to the game anymore after that...

On the other hand, as it was said H6 has a lot of unused potential. The battle system is similar to other Heroes games (except 5), and I feel at home when battling in the game. Although many players complain about the spell and heroes abilities system I think it's quite fun to use, because now you can choose which spells you will use, so no more useless spells like Sorrow or Fortune from H3. I agree that this system should get some tweaking because usually you take the same abilities again and again. Also the game could use some new units. The creature pool is small, so your fighting the same ol' boring units over and over. Also, I think that the concept of boss fights is good but it's not handled the way it should be, because the number of units in battle should be affixed by devs (there was one fight with a demon boss where the number of units was imposed on you and the battle was really fun to play and quite hard). Other thing is that the game is still very bugged mainly because of the Uplay system which is a complete mistake in my opinion. So when the game will be (I hope) finally fixed and mostly bug free, and if they add some more content (new races, adventure map buildings) I think it will be one of the best Heroes games in the series...

H6 is not a bad game, especially not with the newest patch.

But yeah, if you haven't played TotE, then get that game ASAP. It is amazing and there are some many great mods for it such as the improved AI and RPG patch.

Hopefully, H6s expansion will come when you feel done with TotE.

Man, I rly like H6. I like how you can choose to go with magic or might route in the same faction, even with some factions being more inclined to one or other. Boss fights are cool (easy but still cool). Better graphics - less cartoonish, stronger/usefull "lvl1-3" units, town conversion, some artifacts gain exp and lvl up with you, magic is again divided among the elements and not summoning, destruction...

Oh, and I can't forget this one (already can feel some tomatoes coming). Finding those conflux orbs while playing is fun =X haha

About the skills, H6 is less random, Idk if it's a good or bad thing. I think is good when the skills are balanced. I remember playing h5 and carefully making all the route to get that f****** ultimate skill and... SURPRISE! Advanced War Machines or First Aid ? :´-(

But that being said, we can't even compare h6 with h5 + tote about diversity, balance, etc. H5 already got a ton of patches and 2 expansions, ofc it's more complete and polished.
Another thing, to enjoy all the stuff in H6 you'll want to play online.

My advice is: get the H5 +tote, but keep an eye out for h6, it's getting better

Btw, I play mostly single player like you with some casual multiplayer.

If you reorder the letters, you get HIV. So you get the idea...

Heroes VI might not be a bad game (I think otherwise), but is that enough of a reason to spend a lot of money on it ? Heroes I-III left people excited. Few people are excited over Heroes VI. Maybe because if you reorder Heroes VI, you get Heroes IV ?

Yes, Heroes VI is less random, but it doesn't matter since they've failed to capitalize on this system and balance skills. It's a poorly executed derandomized Heroes game.

Did they fix the hero attack animations yet? It did look a little silly that my hero charges down the middle of the battlefield to strike a stack, but it looks even sillier that he just waves his sword and stuff dies.

And I saw mention of town screens, how do they operate? When I initially purchased then returned H6, my town windows were buggy as all ****.

Due to the fact that there are several model types in the game right now (From infantery orc heroes to Naga heroes) I thik They will never return to the "Cutsceen" attack as they have originaly inteded and as was done in Heroes V. and I rather like the current sulution (Personal opinion)

TS work rather fine, atleast for me.
You have the opeation tabs and the Hero/unit slost in the center. The exit on your right and the minimap on the left. All buildings are interactive and you can simply klick on them to open the specific structure you want (Creature dwelling for recruitng, Marketplace for Trade. Town hall for building) You can also use the tabs as in the older Windows to achiev the same effect.

On ym PC they usualy take 1-5 seconds to open them for the first time you start the game, but after that there is as good as no time lost when entering them.

Nore space gave oportuities for mor things to be shown. When recruitng you now can see the creatures artwork, all its states and skills and also its qrowth.

You also have the option to hide all the tabs in the screen and sympli enyoj the atmospher of the TS without anything spoiling your view.

I'll prolly buy H6 to get myself into gear, put off competitive game-play for long enough now. Enough things seemed to have been fixed so that I can enjoy H6.

But the town windows were horrible and completely put me off, apart from the actual screen being broken, the buildings had pictures of their respective units on them, which annoyed me to no end, seemed lazy and poorly done, especially compared to the magnificence of H5.

Needles to say that building still works this way.. individual structures for creatures have the Icon of tha particular creature on them when you are in the Building menu. On the TS itself the buildilng is unique and most of the people would not ques which structure goes to wich creature..but you can lern it prity fast.

You just described the H5 town screens. The polygon models were either really simple, the textures shoddy, or a combination of the two.
