Dragon Slayer Campaign -- Dracon's Starting Skills
Hey all, this site is great. Glad to see there are other people still playing Heroes 3!
I've got one question about the Dragon Slayer campaign. This campaign used to kick my ass when I was a kid and now I want to beat it. From what I've read online, Dracon is supposed to start with Advanced Wisdom and no other secondary skills. But I've restarted the campaign maybe ten times, and my Dracon always seems to have these skills:
Basic Wisdom (good)
Basic Sorcery (ok)
Basic Pathfinding (bad)
Am I stuck with Pathfinding? Or should I just keep restarting the scenario?
If it means anything, I'm using a save game that already completed the main Armageddon's Blade campaign.

Pathfinding is very good, because in the last (4th) scenario, you travel a long time over snow. With upgraded archmagi (--> enchanters), you will suffer big movement penalty without pathfinding.
A must have skill is intelligence! There won't be any chance to refill your spellpoints in the last scenario, and will have to fight a lot with big number of resurrections.
Same counts for earth and air of course. (townportal, dimension door)
Logistics and tactics could also help a lot.

All the scenarios actually have quite a bit of snow on them, so pathfinding is quite useful unless you don't ever use enchanters (and that seems like tying one hand behind your back). I ended up with those 3, earth, air, and water, logistics, and intelligence. I would personally rather have skipped on the sorcery, as very few of the spells I used were direct damage spells.
You can certainly make a case for fire magic (and expert berserk), or for mysticism given that last scenario (no wells or mage guilds). Normally I like tactics, but in this specific case I don't think I would have used it as much, since most of the army I used was ranged troops, and I don't remember many instances where I needed to protect them from an immediate attack by a very fast flyer.

You don't need pathfinding, place your enchanters in first slot and you will move without penalty.

How is that possible? Is it some kind of bug?

I have no idea how program reads creatures before setting penalties. Maybe bug, maybe hidden feature for enchanters, but that's how it works anyway. The other creatures must be all native snow, or will not work.

Interesting anomaly, although I don't know how one could make use of it here given that basic pathfinding is one of Dracon's starting skills, at least in my version of the game. (whereas if it were something from a fixed witch hut, then you have a choice.)

Well, giving that you will have enchanters and tower alignment all the campaign, nothing prohibits you to extract maps, remove pathfinding and pack again. Useless skill now.

I suppose many could. Since I don't have a map editor (H3 Complete for the mac never had one), I'm not familiar with what can and can't be done and solutions that would be obvious with it are often not to me.
Edited to add: upon re-reading, that sounded a bit snarkier and I didn't mean it that way.
The enchanter trick is definitely interesting, I'll be curious to see if it works the same way in the Mac version. (Some things do and some don't. For example, I don't think there's any way to get the messages about how much damage your stack can do to another stack in battle that I see are routine in the PC version).

No editor, no damage display, means the game is almost unplayable on Mac. I did not know Mac version was so creepy.

I'm not sure this is true. In the Battle Options, did you try to turn on either "All Statistics" or "Spells Only" under "Creature Info"? If you have neither turned on, the damage will not be displayed.
Also, IMO you should not edit the game if you want to clear a standard Campaign the way everyone else had to. Yeah, you were given 2 poor skills, but you'll just have to deal with it, the campaign is still very beatable.
I'd probably go with something like... Wisdom, Sorcery, Pathfinding, Logistics, Earth Magic, Air Magic, and 2 of Water Magic/Fire Magic/Tactics/Intelligence/Mysticism (leaning towards Fire Magic + Intelligence)

Don't let Salamandre fool you with his bug story.
Game can easily be won with pathfinding as secondary skill...no need to complicate an easy campaign with such things...

Come on Salamandre, remember that the game is also enjoyable before your skills reach the point where you can defeat AI at 200% on standard map

Star_King: Thanks very much; for some reason I've not noticed that particular feature for ages.
Salamandre: There were definitely a lot of complaints about the lack of an editor, and that is definitely a feature I miss, but for now, not enough to go and purchase the GoG version as well as either emulator software or a copy of windows to install in Bootcamp mode.
I'll agree with angelito and Star_King, that the campaign is eminently winnable with both pathfinding and sorcery. Even if I'd known the enchanter trick, I ended up carrying angels/archangels around (from conservatories) quite often, so pathfinding still came in useful on snow - the speed of archangels gives you first cast against the neutral dragons,
which can be a significant advantage. If I had my druthers, I'd have dropped sorcery, but I've never had a real problem winning a campaign because of a single sub-optimal skill. I think my final score on this one was 1555, Cyclops king.
