As an American you should know how important the Olympics are. Can't you remember the games in 1968? If you go to Youtube and type in Black Power, YouTubes Second suggestion is Olympics 68. I was 10 years old when I watched it, and I will never forget it, because it was PHENOMENAL. If you look at the pictures, the raised black fists, while the flags were hoisted and the National Anthem of the US started playing, with the white Australian Norman, coming up second, wearing a badge in support of them (he would never be nominated again for anything even though he qualified) ... awesome. One of the most powerful gestures ever made - and one that has had one hell of an impact.
Same is true for Women's Lib and Women's rights all over the world. We had a Turkish female gold medalist this year, and all nations had a women team. They watch TV as well in the muslimic states...
The Olympics are important because it's simply the biggest event on Earth. It's peaceful war - competition -, and it's SOCIALLY important. In 1968 it was Black Power - black athletes would win a lot of stuff for the US, but still didn't have full rights.Jphn Carlos and Tommie Smith brought it to the world - and to their home country (and of course they got problems for it without end). Australia 2000 was a stage for the Aborigines, and Cathy Freeman, who won Gold for herself, the Aborigines AND Australia - for all the world to see.
The Olympics see youths from all over the world, meeting in friendly competetion, find friends among people from other countries - it's an event for YOUNG people, and Britain made a big party of it, letting the athletes take part in the closing ceremony.

What more benefit to humanity has Lady Gaga, The Beatles, Elvis or ABBA in opposit to the olympic games?
