Apple 1, Samsung 0 and Customers -1
Apple, the company your neighbour and boss probably heared by now, won a lawsuit ,1.05 billion dollar lawsuit, against the Korean company Samsung.
Quote:
Apple’s $1.05 billion jury verdict, which held that Samsung, the world’s No. 1 manufacturer of mobile phones, had violated several patents owned by Apple, the world’s most valuable company, will cause huge aftershocks in the cellphone, software, and Internet industries.
Samsung was found to have violated Apple’s “trade dress” by in essence making smartphones that look too similar to the iPhone. More consequently, Samsung was found to be in violation of several Apple software patents covering elements of the smartphone user interface. Apple, for example, was the first company to market a touch-screen interface featuring the ability to zoom in and out by pinching your fingers. Apple also owns patents on certain aspects of screen scrolling behavior, including the particular way a scrolling screen bounces if you push it too far.
More on that
In the end effect, Apple just sued another company for copying the not so uniqe boxy round design, a redundant zoom feature, cable plugs, camera behind smarphone and so on-
This proves that the patent BS we get to observe is just another broken system to take advantage of others in the US.
They cannot ban the sales of the already established Samsung mobile phones and even if Apple could pursue a ban, that would only work in the US and in the worst case, in europe.
Broken patent system
Customers, at least in the US-EUrope, will enjoy a narrower market of expensive iphones, expensive windows phones and so on...Good job America!
Quote:
Apple lawyers plan to formally demand Samsung pull its most popular cellphones and computer tablets from the U.S. market. They also can ask the judge to triple the damages from $1.05 billion to $3 billion
What it could mean for you
Quote: That creates a problem of enforcement. Forcing Samsung to stop selling its Galaxy phones because you can tap the screen to zoom the display of a document is overkill, and a huge burden on consumers who already bought the phone and might need it repaired or replaced. Yet Apple is asking the judge in the Samsung case to ban eight Samsung devices from sale in the wake of the verdict.
In the industry of the 21st century, IP rights are more powerful than innovation and the right to sell something that must be round and boxy...yay!

Well, it's a US company, on US ground. You expect judges to be fair?
The only logical move would be to make identical action in Korea, force Apple to withdraw their Iphones from that country and pay Samsung a nice fine
Besides: don't get Iphone. Overpriced piece of ****.

You know that at the same day there was a similar trial in Seoul and Samsung won that one?

This is ridiculous on so many levels. Especially coming from the company whose most revolutionary, breakthrough ideas feature renaming the portable MP3 player to iPod.

And they succeeded. Most Americans call mp3 players "ipods".
Even though there are better and cheaper MP3 players out there. Dear Americans, buy Iriver, Iaudio or Meizu next time, it's half the price, double the quality

Honestly they are well designed (except for new macbooks, which have terrible cooling systems), and comfortable, with great interface, fast reaction time. They are just overpriced to the point of absurd.

I live in a rich section of America, so a bunch of people have the phones. The phones seem pretty cool to me, just that they're way too expensive.
Anyway, although I consider the whole copyright thing dumb, I do agree that they look kind of similar and have features in common. Don't really care though, as I have neither of those company's products.

Believe it or not, many marketing folks view this kind of "brand genericization" as a negative and fight hard against it. When band-aid, coke, and other brand names become generic words, the brands loses their respective characteristic identities. E.g., how do you ask for or otherwise talk about a Coke when "Coke" begins to mean "any kind of cola you have on hand"?

i germany you simply say cola But, yeah, I do agree with that.
And as of this sueing-addiction of apple I can only say that it doesn't really make folks love you for that. They even once sued a little café because they had an apple on their sign

@Gnollking
Don't ****! But we can't say it's truth yet.
However, I've read in newspapers that Samsung really plagarised Apple, and there are some documents that prove it.

And that's the reason why iPhone was success. Steve Jobs had charisma to attract people to buy Apple's products. Let's be honest, Jobs actually invented very few things. iPhone and all those iThings are simply evolution of technology, and not really crossing of some great technological boundary, like landing on Moon.

iPhone was a success because the overprice and hype put it in "luxury" tier. You know, gadgets people buy to feel stylish and better-than-rest.

That's actually quite true. I do NOT have an iPhone or any kind of phone like it. I still have a regular old cell phone.
Why haven't I bought an iPhone? Simply put, I don't need one. I don't feel the need to be connected to the internet at all times. I don't need a big touch screen. I just need something that makes and receives phone calls. For me the simple phone works. 400$ for a cell phone just doesn't make much sense to me.
True, when 95% of people out there have iPhones or the equivalents, I do feel at times almost like a second class citizen. People say, with no amount of derision, when they see the phone I use, "Why don't you get in this century?"
I'd be lying if I said I haven't started to feel a little self-conscious about it. Totally stupid, I agree, but there it is anyway. Thus I bet a lot of people buy these things not just because they want to have a status symbol, but because when you DON'T have one you are almost made out to be a social outcast.

I totally agree Cor, I have a phone that's worth about $15, I call people and send messages which is all I need it for. But recently I felt a subconscious 'peer-pressure' to buy an Iphone, touchscreen and everything it'll be great. Then I realized that even with all the extra perks that comes with an iphone I would still only use it for it's basic functions, calling people and receiving calls.
Then again, what's the point of having money if you can't force it down people's throats with useless blings.
