It's hard to give a reasonable reply, when you haven't specified what you already do with the different towns, etc.
So my suggestions may be of a very novice level, or it may be useful.
First of all, unlike single player, in multiplayer you'll often need to priortize targets depending on what they offer and when you can earliest get it.
When you can get it earliest depends on how good you're to take out neutrals. Taking out neutrals requires experience, so practice is key. Which means many hours might be wasted with simulated fights, is that really worth it to you?
Then there's the important goals for the different towns, which depends on the rules of the game though. Mainly it's to go for creatures when building, not gold, not mage guild.
Getting level 7's in week 1 is often easy with anything, but Dungeon, Rampart and one more town, but I can't remember which.
Get a lot of heroes, because then you get information about the map earlier. Go for certain skills early, such as air and earth, and certain spell, which gives you an advantage. On the other hand, if you decide to go for wisdom, it's no rush to get.
Go for certain buildings. Especially buildings which gives you creatures, such as dwellings and conservatories, etc. Likewise make sure you visit stat gaining buildings, though knowledge and power is not that important after you reach a certain level, defense and especially attack is always worthwhile to get. Especially for your main hero.
For main heroes, depending on the rules again, try to get a barbarian, as he'll get a lot of +attack up till level 10. Crag Hack is especially a good choice. Make sure you know what skills to aim for, which is most important to get early, and which are essential for the final fight.
In the final battle, unless the opponent has a lot more power than you, I find getting a single unit with greater speed than the opponent (typical phoenix, beware of speed artifacts on the opponent), or equal speed, if you're attacking. Expert tactics, and mass haste in the first round may very well decide the battle from the start.
In the few times I've played, it's often the one who can break utopias first who wins.
But again, it depends a lot on what rules you guys have. Is diplomacy and/or necromancy allowed? Then those are the essential skills.
Is it allowed to flee after casting a single spell? Then the power stat and money buildings become much better.
Does the game end, when one of you lose your main hero, and are there spell restrictions? Otherwise it'll be more of a gorilla war like game with 8 dimension dooring heroes travelling all over the map and each time one falls, in stead of surrendering, the tavern is bought through until this hero is found, and re-applied.
