Elvin was talking about starting the next round after this one ends, so next week I suppose. Pretty sure the expansion is coming way after that

@Xerox
The plan is to keep the tourneys running, one after another. After this one ends I will announce a second one and allow a period of 2 weeks for new people to join. I've already started working on the new map version

@Locksley
Yes there is a lot to learn about the game's finer points and many little details can make or break your game.

- Griffins are very good, you can imagine their dive under a vindicator's command! But otherwise confessors are more about annoying the opponent than dealing damage, by default they start with 5 attack
- I won't hide that I did not know pacification was undispellable and might have fallen for it myself. Purity would help and I have a suspicion that warlord's command also might but I never got around to testing it.
- Guardian angel prevents all kinds of harm so it is essentially an alternative dispel. At lvl 4 it can be a real pain, it's like the rune of resurrection has returned with a vengeance. Thank goodness its resurrection effect was weakened.
- Intimidation basically makes you unable to target stronger units but some abilities do not requite a target or may hit multiple targets while aiming at clickable units. I'd bet that ravager charge and retractable spikes follow the same guidelines.
- Speaking of getting yourself surrounded, that is a good moment for a surprise circle of winter If only you were a monk.
- Initiative can be a female dog sometimes. It is preferable to go full frontal assault but haven has its failsafes against rushers.

First of the two games is done with my Reaper facing off against simpel's Demonist. I was pleasantly surprised by the nature of this imaginative build but that kind of thing takes time and time is short against a necromancer throwing destructive spells turn after turn. In the beginning I honestly expected him to punish me with purity but I couldn't delay my agony too much or the spell would have meant nothing. Even so I thought I would out-damage him for that turn and then go for chain lightning. He had impressive stats - especially magic defense - but a combination of agony, blizzard and lightning cut through his forces swiftly while his summons could do little else than prevent my spiders from shooting. Kudos for the thought, I appreciate creative thinking. I am especially curious how this strategy would work against a confessor, with meditated summons. Now THAT's worth trying!

Simpel's artifacts are in the inventory while mine are equipped. Excuse the horrible graphics, I set them to lowest after the game froze 3 times in a row.

Combat casualties.

Looking foward to the next game. Let's see how my trusty paladin fares against the forces of Chaos

[...]

Now THAT's worth trying!

My attack was up to 15 or so, I believe. I had the +8 attack gauntlets, among other arties. I blame that, his going blood (no particularly good defense bonuses), my griffin getting a luck hit, and the priestess' naturally low defense. Even then, he's exagerating his losses a little, it was more around 55-60, he still had just under 90 left. Still, rather unexpectedly high losses for a confessor, like you were saying.
It was both his kirins and kensei that got surrounded. Side of the map, angels and all 3 elites contributed to that. Praets and vestals were there too, but they didn't contribute to penning them in, they just contributed defense and offense. In any case, circle of winter wouldn't have worked for him. The storm might've, if he was willing to take the half damage blow.

And I had taken all 3 magic defense perks. I could see you coming a mile away.
Concerning my strategy, to explain it a little, I was trying to find something viable for magic tears for inferno. My logic was that you summon a BUNCH of stuff, they all contribute in some way or another, like you know in luck hits, which gives you more gating, which gives you more stuff on the map. The summons feed the gatings, etc, until you fill most of the map in a rather messy way. I initially charge forward, but that's because at the start the machine isn't rolling yet, I need some luck hits to get it going a little. For reference, I practiced it against a computer before hand. On the second turn, I had gating 4. Then I had gating 4 at the end of every turn afterwards. If you can get your luck rolling out like this (it gets easy with so many things on the field), you're golden. Map fills up, 2 stacks/turn. You just pull back a little with your real troops, try to have them in safer spots (not necessarily out of the way, but places where they can't get focused down because there's too many units on the field in the way). For reference, in my match against Elvin, throughout the WHOLE battle, I got 1 gating 3 off, that's IT. I had another gate right when my dogs died. The end. When I'm saying my luck wasn't going off, it wasn't going off at aaaaaaaalllll.

Also, concerning my match. If I'm not worried about dying too much (like, I'm fighting a tears build), I'd go for an even better version of what I had. Instead of getting regen/mass regen, petrification and 3 earth magic power up, I'd get 3 fire magic power up and the tears morale buff. Why? You have SOOOOO many things on the field, and for all of them increased morale increases the chances of doubling their chances at getting luck (also the fire magic buffs my shooter attacks).
Oh and if you're wondering why petrification in the build that allows a more defensive posture? Between your earth elemental petrification and your hero's, you can keep this one unit invincible for large parts of the battle. I haven't got to the point where I'd use it (ie haven't tested it), but I don't think it would work as infinite invincibility (if you're thinking "earth elementals can only use it once!", well you can resummon to get a new one), I think there would be windows of vulnerability, so not exactly cheesy. But assuming regen works even when petrified, it can litterally save a stack. And if it doesn't work? Invincibility frames are still useful. They can make this one stack survive with just a couple 2 turns longer. How is that important? Well, that's 2 more turns of the associated gated stack running amock.
One last note, forgot to mention it in the text but it's part of my theory for this build, getting so much luck feeding into so much more gating (in my practice it got the point where I had gating 4 and no unit to gate), that all feeds into your troops surviving better. Magic tears ability is that gated stacks take a percentage of damage for their original stacks. It gets harder and harder for the opponent to win as you fill up the screen. He needs to focus down your original stacks but that gets harder the longer it goes on, real stacks get defense from fake stacks and those fake stacks get in the way of his units, stopping them from focusing firing down real stacks. So what then? you either scatter your damage (mass regen to the max makes it hard to accomplish anything that way), either you try to cut down those fake stacks, but I keep summoning more and you're getting nowhere until you get to kill real stacks. The potential is there. I'd say its main weakness is that the machine needs to get rolling. Beginning of the battle is critical. If you don't get through that fine, you don't make it period. But if you get the machine rolling, it gets really hard for the opponent.

This text feels a little hectic, but really, in all, that's just to say, I didn't do my strat justice. It has potential, this was just a really bad situation to use it in, with luck not triggering to make it worse.

More luck and gates are nice but it wouldn't have mattered much in the long run. Unlike a tears character, a reaper can easily destroy a stack in two turns, with a mix of destructive and focused shooting. That takes out two stacks(gate along with the original) that could have been dealing lucky attacks and the only thing you have gained in return is a summon that has less luck than the original inferno stacks. Obviously I cannot keep killing stacks at that rate for long(esp with linked gating should the gate appear timely) but killing some cores or the tormentors is fair game. I will undoubtedly sustain some good blows in doing so but you will lose momentum. The luck gains are unlikely to meet the luck losses is all I'm saying. I prefer to first strengthen myself / weaken the opponent before calling in support units, it is safer.

Petrification is great and it indeed stacks with regeneration. You can end the spell and move your unit at any time too. Problem with elemental petrification is that it won't last more than 1 round and it is unlikely to work on your stronger stacks. Use with caution though, as mass dispel can strip you of your invulnerability(single dispel cannot target petrified stacks).

Yes well I did say it doesn't work best in that situation. I was explaining my strategy in a broader way. Also, your focus firing relies on your shooters. You need them to stay untied to do that. If you don't have a solid turtle it wont work. And I almost cut through your ghosts before you could heal them. 30 left.

I guess this says it all. Your strategy, simpel, should have worked (or almost have worked).

RE: Elvins comments on Locksley vs. Simpelicity

As Simpelicity already has pointed out my point was that my creatures were immobilised, surrounded and butchered by creatures that were no wimps even if they were led by a magic hero. And nothing could be done about it, I should have put on autocombat in the third turn when five of my stacks had become useless (and another stack couldn't reach anyone). Anyway chatting was nice!
Of course I knew what guardian angel does but I wanted to tell that compared to other abilities it's quite a bargain, and the package is not 100 % logical. More powerful than many ultimates and for free with unlimited use, morale happens all the time.
I forgot to mention it but searing light is a time stasis. The description says creature is blinded but unlike with the spell attacking again won't remove the effect. Just like with pacify it seems like a bug. Generally speaking there's too many exceptions and bugs in this game.
Finally, I couldn't help thinking "what?" for a moment, when I heard about a final where two finalists had a test game with the same factions as in a upcoming duel against the third finalist. Please take this criticism as lighlty as you can since I also thought "wathever". Like you I have come to this site and tournament to find (and found) nice people who just like me wants to practice and to talk about the same game.

When shall we see how your trusty rusty paladin fares against the forces of Chaos?

I'm here waiting for you: Wednesday 11-16 and after 21. Thursday 11-16. But probably not tonight (Tuesday). (Any game must end before 16). GMT+1

That was my bad, I had forgotten your matchup when I chose my hero. Call it a bad coincidence.. Though I didn't do anything that simpel didn't already know except perhaps remind him what a pain in the @ss waves of renewal can be I owe you one, if you ever need to test a strategy or get a feel against a certain faction be sure to ask.
Did you say pacification stays when the unit gets attacked?

I'm gmt +2 so I'll probably be available tomorrow around 2-3 your time. If not then Thursday because I might return late in the evening. We'll see how it goes. Wait, is that a smell of charred flesh and sulfur..?

The practice really only reminded me of the importance of CCing the priestesses. Practicing in duel map 2.0 means you can't get more than broader themes like that. Too many things change. Scale, to be precise, which changes everything.

A small but important part. Looking back it was the worst opening to start with shooting, hoping to save the wave for later when I actually knew that kirins would need a revitalisation after charging into the enemy lines. Hoped to dispel pristesses if there was trouble but didn't expect that with so many controlled stacks the initiative que would not allow any meaningful dispels by the hero.

Elvin, I just meant that pacify like many other things don't work like expected.

Sadly I have to cancel my gaming time tomorrow in the day because of some kind of fair for unemployed (such is life after university). But Wednesday evening and Thursday daytime I'm available.

And this tourney has finally reached a conclusion!

My paladin was quite confounded when he faced a demonist instead of a pyromancer but Locksley's foxy tactics proved that his choice was a solid one. As were his stats
Initially he had gotten gauntlets of the Khan and another from warlord set for +2 att bonus(for a total of +8) plus a cleak of resistance +6 and he was overjoyed that they would help him to smite the evil. A disconnect instead gave him 4 artifacts from the guardian set(guardian helm/spaulders/boots/shield) for a whooping +17 morale, +2 initiative and a fairly worthless cloak of Sylanna.

Having been chosen as the Guardian, he set on to vanquish evil with burning determination, heroic charge, rush and mass dispel. His chaotic foe was equipped with an array of fearsome and agonizing spells as well as puppet, which promptly took over his glories and blinded his cavalry. With burning determination he moved on and was soon met with despair. To his horror, glory cleansing light did not trigger by just moving the unit and he made a grave mistake in using heroic charge on his crusaders who were taunted by the ravagers' presence. A heroic charge of 1 tile..

The battle raged on with neither side being significantly damaging and linked gating further decreased the the human offensive. Even after a rush! charge, the crusaders could not kill over 2 pit lords! But as the foul demonist's mana waned, the paladin made a grave mistake! He killed the last gated pit lord, allowing for a new one to instantly block his archers! Having scattered his army across the battlefield to eradicate the sources of gated stacks, he had left them all but helpless. The demonist meditated and unleashed elementals and havoc to further throw the haven forces in disarray.

But the cavalry and griffins' fervour and resilience allowed them to endure. After a valiant battle, the paladin spotted an opportunity to turn things around! In a combined assault, his crusaders and celestials took down the gated pit lords and the diving griffins took their place, having nowhere else to land! Thus the archers were finally free to shoot and well covered by their feathery friends. The tide had turned, it was only a matter of time. The paladin raised hi ssword in salute, his enemy had gained his respect

In other words, respect to Locksley for giving me one amazing game, worthy of a final With both armies having good survivability, this game could only be won through tactics mastery and it was a great challenge for both sides. I was annoyed that I lost +8 att and +6 magic def to a d/c but ending up with a total of 35 morale turned out just as good if not better. Guardian angel IV revived my units numerous times and I don't think I could have survived that long wthout it. But the decisive point was when I managed to substitute the gated pitlords with my diving griffins that were forced to take their place when the crusaders and celestials killed them and blocked the other landing spots. A rally flag gave Locksley plenty of lucky attacks and gave his demented refuge between it and rock obstacles. My large units could simply not get in there so they were able to harass them with a big grin on their face
With the marksmen freed I finally had a way to deal with those pests. Hallelujah!

Some pics:

My arties. Stats do not include defender, leadership and arcane ward as I had not picked skills at the time.

Chaos I was killing stacks one by one to prevent their luck from feeding the gauge but in doing so I was scattered all over. Thank goodness that heroic charge on angels killed 18 breeders, having two mobile stacks running around was painful.

It was already messy but when the pitlord summons spawned next to the archers and mass decay came into play..

Griffins land on a tile still smouldering from the pit lords' demise

[img][/img]

Checkmate!

Time to award the cups for the first round.

Elvin - Gold Cup

Simpelicity - Silver Cup

Locksley - Bronze Cup

In the next two days I will add achievements for the participants, you'll see what I'm talking about

Now then, the second tourney will begin in two weeks from now. Anyone interested make a post here

Edited by Locksley at 12:28, 23 Nov 2012.

This is the story of Penny the Penalizer, cunning servant of the demon in the merry forests of Sheogh.

Her scouts had reported about a rusty but trusty paladin but not until the day of battle it became clear that his humble clothes did not conceal a confessor, another wolf wearing wool. The paladin would be well prepared and his forces would strike back hard at those brave and foolish enough attack them. Penny decided to keep her foes in constant terror, fear and sadness to preserve her minions.

When gathering her equipment she saw that the powers of chaos had generated rubbish for her. Finally she ended up with too many necklaces and some mixed parts that, somehow, together with her skills gave her good health and stats (13-15 for everything except magic power which was 29) but her luck was low. Nothing could tempt her to turn to destructive magic but she found the Heart of Darkness. Yes, her enemies would crumble in agony.

Analyzing the battlefield she saw that it would be difficult for her XXXL sized forces to manoeuvre to the enemy. On the other hand there were plenty of hideouts to harass them from. It would be best to advance slowly, avoiding danger and direct confrontation to the cost of not being able to gate.

Then the paladin's ability to counterstrike suddenly weakened and more intense fighting began. Penny laughed out loudly wondering where the crusaders would charge from the ravagers but in the confusion she made mistakes of her own. Like wasting a puppet master on glories who were not ready for another blinding strike and getting the breeders blinded in the next turn, as well as underestimating the sentinels who didn't run away despite a terror spell.

After hours of fighting the paladin had cornered the demons. Having the archers in hostage and the support of earth elementals they still had some hope, but the human ground and air forces working together were too much for them. Some remaining maniacs illogically left their comfort zone and so the battle ended.

Penny saw the paladin, with no rusty specks to be seen on his shiny armour, raising his sword in salute! She licked her wound and it tasted good. Penny had lost but the way to the end had been very interesting. Congratulations Elvin!

Some more pictures!

You can't strike without penalty, even if a guardian angel protects your angel!

The second last hit. Looking on the bright side of life until the very end.

How it finally ended.

Also, I'm definately the next tournament.
