Might and Magic: Heroes - The Boardgame
(Demo Status)
The design of the different parts of the game may change till the final release, I was said that some of the graphics will be replaced with better ones.
So I walked through the Halls of the boardgame fair Spiel in Essen and I saw a demo version of a Heroes Boardgame!
Player count: 2-4
Duration: 2+ hours
Author: Marcin Thomczyk
The Polish version will be released in one month. A english release is sheduled to the first half of the next year. But they don't have a publisher outside of Poland yet. There's no german, french, etc. version planned yet. (That's what the guy at the fair said, so it must not be 100% accurate)
Now I'll try to describe how the game works. I do this out of my mind so it doesn't has to be right 100%. Also since the game's not in the finale stage some things may be changed until then.
Content
-16 Map tiles -example-
The board is build of these when ready build up, it will look like this.
-4 capital sheets-stronghold as example-
It's your city. Each player can have only one city which can't be captured. I don't know exactly but I think the buildings are the same in each fraction. I'll look sunday when I'm there again. You mark the current level of your town here (higher levels allow you to buy better creatures), the amount of winning points you have and there's a place to put your gold and ressource markers there.
-1 battle initiative track (more or less the battlefield)the thing the creature markers lay on
When a battle is engaged the participiating creatures and hero/es are put on this in a row depending on the initiative.
-12 hero sheets examples: Irina, Rosalie, Sandor, Anastasia
Here one can see the portrait of the hero with it's specialities next to it. Each hero has three of them and each faction has three heroes. There's also the blood/tears orientation, the fraction symbol, a mannequin (which indicates warrior/mage) and there are also the hero's stats, which would be from left to right:
Power(for battles)-Mana(for spells obviously)-Initiative(for battles)- Leadership(determines how much creatures the hero can command, like in Kings Bounty)
-16 Action cards -example-
There are three different ones for each faction. You choose what to do in your turn with them.
-15 Week cards -sorry, no picture yet-
They show the week's event like all enemy creatures on the board increase in their numbers by 3 or one can only produce one creature in town this week. Also when the Week cards stack is emtpy the game ends.
-15 treasure cards the right one
Rewards for killing creatures from the board.
-20 scrolls cards -sorry, no picture yet-
Like scrolls in the pc game.
-20 Artefact cards -only backside in the treasure card pic yet-
I have forgotten how to obtain these but they give you winning points ( and i think stat boosts). I'll post more about them in the sunday/monday update
-64 Skill Cards -example-
Skills you obtain when leveling up. Now with random factor again
-36 Building Tokens -example-
All the towns buildings except creature building.s, for example a tavern, market, etc.
-104 Unit Tokens -some can be seen here-
The player's creatures. They show the Power, upgrade/non-upgrade, initiative, abilities amd a picture of the creature.
-48 Encounter Tokens -example-
The creatures from the board. They show power, their number/lives, initiative and abilities. On the backside there are the rewards for slaying it.
-24 Resource tokens (value 3), 26 Resource tokens (value 1) -can be seen in the town sheet picture-
They're used for constructing buildings.
-24 Gold tokens (value 3), 26 Gold tokens (value 1) -can be seen in the town sheet picture-
They're used for buying creatures.
-lots of other tokens
they can be handy
-some markers
you can mark stuff with them
-5 eight-sided dice
Used in combats.
-1 special six sided dice photo
Used in battles.
-Rulebook and 4 summary cards
Gameplay
The game consist of several rounds in which each play has a turn and does on action.
It ends when either after the 15th round or when one player reaches a estimated amount of points.
Your turn
At your turn you choose one of the action cards you have in your hand. There's always a possiblity to move and then either build/buy creatures/mine.
Then the next player continues until everybody made a turn, then a new round (week) begins and a event card is drawn.
Move
A player can move it's heroes. They can move up to four squares. When a hero walks onto a field with a creature in it, a battle begins(see Battles). When a hero steps onto a field with a location (e.g. mines) the player can choose to either explore or do nothing. If the player choses to explore he first has to fight if a creature guards this place. This is marked by an arrow on the field of the creature. After the battle the player can "use" the place.
Build
The player can choose between upgrading it's city or building the special structures. For both to be done he pays the required ressource-markers.
Upgrading your city allows you to buy better creatures, there's no such thing as income.
The special building give you bonuses like the market which allows you to trade or a building that let's you buy upgraded versions of your creatures.
Buy creatures
The player can buy up to three creatures, so in a full build town (with 4 different creatures) it won't be possible to buy all. The player pais the required sum of gold-markers and puts the bought creatures directliy into the heroe's army.
Mine
The player's mines produce resources.
Battles
When a battle is engaged the battle token is placed on the field where the battle takes place. Now the creatuters are put onto the battle-initiative rack. The creatures with the lowest initiative number to the left (so the lower the initiative the earlier they strike...) If there's a tie the enemy wins. Heroes a handled the same as the creaturess.
Now all the creatures strike each after the other. One of the other players roll the dices for the attacking creature.
The amount of dices thrown are determined by the amount of creatures in this stack but it's not possible to be more five dices. For the player's creatures this is meisured by the amount of markers and for the hostile creatures by their number/lives value minus the damage tokens they have.If the creature's upgraded or if it has the ability (since the hostile creatures can't be upgraded/unupgraded) one of the dices may be replaced with the six sided one which is better than the normal dices.
It has the following sides:
1 Hit
2 Hits
Luck- you may reroll one of the eight sided dice
Misfortune - Nothing happens
Good moral - A creature of this stack may be healed/resurrected
Now the dice get thrown. Each dice showing a number that is equal or lower than the creatures power is a hit. Now the player may choose which stack is damaged. A unupgraded creature dies after one hit, a upgrade one is turned to the other side and is now unupgraded. If it's the player's throw the hostile creature takes as much damage tokens as damage dealt. The hero can't take damage.
The battle ends when either all the player's creatures are dead or the hostile ceature has as many damage tokens as their lives/number value.
That's the vague idea of how the game works.
I'll do an sunday/monday update with some additional info and more/better pictures. If you have questions tell them to me and i'll ask the guys at the fair on sunday.

I have the same question as Avirosb. Even if the games box has the Ubisoft logo, the game looks rather made out of random graphics when you consider the game being published so soon.

This site http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/108344/might-magic-heroes, has some nice photos. The game look's complicated...
And it looks like it's designed by a Polish company which specializes in making licensed products. I wonder why this company was chosen, it doesn't look like a big player, and we have some nice companies which have a lot more experience in making board games (although maybe this one is only responsible for artistic design and printing, not game mechanics itself). The game's official premiere is in Essen (18-21 October).

So read something about the game on the geek and it looks like it has been in development for mote then a Year. And the pictures there also show a better look at the game. Looks a bit like Mage knight TBG published this year, and often described as "a heroes like board game".
And since I know that polish people are good board game designer and huge MaM enthusiast I believe they will make a good job. But I kind of regret that the game uses H6 graphics.

@ Dave
I'll make sure to ask them about the license-stuff And i don't have anything against the H6 graphics. Sure, it would have been better with H3 graphics (in my case) but since everybody loves the graphics of different games and it's only normal to use the newest pc game counterpart for a boardgame it's ok for me.
@Kronos
Yeah, i love them, too. When{if it comes out in english language i'll surely buy it!

I was more thinking about original graphics then H2/3/4/5/6s.
Especially Older games would make no sense since the game is set in Ashan and uses the H6 units/heroes.
Note: all this could be changed, if they made a more original attempt.

Why would you want to associate your board game with a mediocre sequel ? I'm pretty sure balance will be as bad as in the computer game.

Question: Why do the portraits on the Hero sheet samples have different image qualities?
EDIT: The blood/tear symbol also seems to be moving around a lot.

Finally got down to playing it. It was playable but some Artifacts are outright broken and others are nearly useless. Also the randomness of where mines are was annoying, like a friend had 3 gold mines in one area, and I had 3 Teleports (surprisingly though that was the fact that allowed me to win). But that could probably be easily tweaked. Also the monsters on the map seem weakish. I am not sure if we played it correctly as the rules leave a lot to improve.
But I have to try it as a 2-player game. The most fun part is leveling your hero, and that there are different heroes for the factions. So I am hoping it feels a bit different with a different hero. So as of now I'd rate it mediocre. Funnily though we played for 5 hours and it actually didn't feel that long at all. Maybe it was the classic "one more turn"-syndrome of Heroes?
