It' s not only naive to think that if someone isn't afraid of hell, he can shoot his own mother, 20 kids and himself yet still be mentally stable, it's also truly superficial.

Quote: Psycopaths are smart enough to fake mental assesment tests.
You remember that girl who killed a 8 year old because she wanted to find out how it feels like to kill somebody? "She was sorry", thats what she said later on. Point is, thats a lie. These people are pathological liars. Statistics show that. Psycopaths have little problem killing somebody, any other remark they make about pity is a lie because their brain cant produce or maintain any empathy.
actually it could be ignorance and not a lie.
it's easier for psychopaths to kill since it will not cause them any emotionnal distress, but it still seems that the vast majority of psychopaths don't kill. because being a psychopaths doesn't mean you are a sadistic who finds pleasure in torturing and killing people. actually a psychopath would find really little pleasure in it (if at all) and quickly forget the emotionnal experience since they barely feel emotions at all. for them it's just as exciting as going to the mall.
and if the man was a psychopath, why did he kill himself?

One thing is for sure: given the recent rumblings in Washington it seems almost certain this tragedy is going to lead to reformation of gun laws in this country. Assault rifle ban at the very least.

It's beyond me why military-grade weapons are allowed in the first place. Can a gun proponent (not Elodin, thanks) or at least someone familiar with the reasoning behind this thing explain the concept?

Wow, Elodin's post is a fantastic example of argumentum ad absurdum. Textbook one.
Why don't you just admit that you love your little shotgun?
Anyway... Taking life seems a bit light to some guys. Maybe we should start with some sort of re-evaluation of teaching programs in US? You don't need to brainwash kids and say them guns are bad, but maybe saying that killing ain't always the easy solution would be better ?
Just look at Elodin. Someone wants to rob him. His insticts? Blow his brains out. Pretty scary.

I don't really see this happening when the same children are taught by their parents that some people are just evil and it's not that bad to empty a magazine in their heads if they are in the vicinity and look threatening (and evil people tend to look threatening, part of evil's description).
Bottom line is that the problem is indeed not exactly with the guns - Switzerland also has plenty of them, its population is de facto militarized but when was the last time when you heard about some mass murder by a freaked Swiss gunman (there's one example indeed but in this case it's more due to low security because such an incident simply had no precedent)? Like with the drugs and the other social issues which are merely symptoms, the root causes lie elsewhere. Then again the "right" to wave a weapon just makes the whole thing worse and even though banning the firearms alone will resolve nothing, it's a step that has to be taken along with the other necessary steps.

I seriously doubt that. The gun makers will not like that and the politicians will not dare to go against their masters. Gun addicts will only keep saying that more guns is the solution and Obama is not really the president of change he pretends to be.

Quote: I seriously doubt that.
Doubt all you want, but it is going to happen. There are already bills being introduced in Congress, and even the NRA has stated it is willing to talk about sensible measures to curb gun violence (whatever those are - the fact that NRA is even stating it is willing to talk about gun control is a huge change). Agree with it or not, there will be some policy change resulting from this shooting, and it'll probably be a bipartisan effort.
In related news, I understand there has been a surge in purchases of Bushmaster semiautomatic rifles in recent days, so much so that many stores can't stock them fast enough. One wonders about the strange mentality that goes something like: "A certain gun was just used to murder a bunch of children in Connecticut. I better go out and buy one quickly while it's still legal to do so..."

I heard about Obamas task force a few minutes ago on tv but I still find it hard to believe that something will change under Obama. As I am unable to argue against you though, I will just have to hope that you are right.

Surely these orders will make us all safer.
I thought the use of the kids was a nice touch. Convince all the fools who believe they weren't props that the President sincerely believes the legislation will reduce gun violence.

Of course it won't, but the punishment of the righteous must come first. Never heard of gun control curing mental bankruptcy, but I guess it is America .

I know. Just for once I wish he would ****can all the political games and just talk to us like we have an ounce of intelligence. I'd be so much more receptive to anything he has to say. I see that kind of crap and I just get turned off.
But so much for the "change" part of "hope and change".

American children should have armed protection because the presidents children got it? Then maybe every american should be rich and own a home then...
It is good to see Obama actually doing something for once but do not be surprised if he loses this battle. The majority of the american people is insignificant compared to the force... I mean to heartless big corporations.
