Heroes Renovated
DOWNLOAD
Place in Era Mods folder to use.
Of the 156 Heroes more than 40 have new specialties and 23 start with different secondary skills. This mod is basically designed to get rid of the "crappy" heroes while playing random maps.
Almost every spell and every monster specialist is unique now, that is, almost none of them has the same specialty.
Fortress heroes are stronger in magic with a couple of level 5 spell specialists and a Sorrow specialist.
I recommend turning on Warfare skill, because that is the setting I redesigned and tested the secondary skill balance but if you don't like it, there's no harm in turning it off.
Learning II (script 30, heroes gain expi as they stand) is also recommended since I didn't touch Learning as a starting skill in a few heroes that are suited for town defense.
Hero Specialty Boost is recommended. Some authentic boosts such as Eagle Eye specialists' flying creatures has been disabled, Meteor Shower specialists automatically shooting Magic Arrows has also been disabled because they wake up blinded or paralyzed creatures. The script will function like it used to when the mod is off.
Rebalanced Hero Abilities script must be turned off.
A lot of Heroes has custom portraits.I tried to give heroes with non-fractional specialties more compatible pictures. So, Deemer (Meteor Shower) for example, is
no longer a minotaur and won't look like a misfit if used by a Castle player. In a few exceptional situations, the new portrait is from the original game but used on a different hero (totally according to my subjective taste).
This may feel weird in the beginning but you'll adjust to it after three or four games. If you don't like the new portraits, simply remove the PCX files from the Data folder.
I want to thank Hero of Light, Bersy (for Era 2) and especially JimV and Salamandre for their help and assistance, without their patient answers to my noob questions I would be a total duck in the desert with this.

Thanks, you should consider to release your mod dat file, look how Tew 3 or last HoL are done. In this way, the player does not have to remember then disable/enable options, they come in.

Very good idea, game needs it
So, who is Anton in the end? I don't see him mentioned in your post and certainly he does have some unique specialty. Very nice and balanced, I'd say.

Thanks. He's Mutare turned into a nightmare specialist, and since there was 2 Mutares I changed the name, that's all. There is no campaign or scenario specific to the mod.

Umm, you say you changed crappy heroes, and Mephala lost armorer specialty for scouting. Luna lost fire wall for disrupting ray, Brissa lost haste for air shield.
Those were gods, not crap.

Those are exceptional. There were too many Armorer specialists, a Scouting specialist (a ranger made sense) can be really good once she levels up a little, opens the map like the sun. So if it means one less Armor specialist, let it be.
I don't know why but i have a personal dislike against fire wall, probably the graphics.
As I said I tried to make spell specialists unique, there were 3 Haste specialists and the bonus becomes insignificant very quickly, now the Haste specialist starts with Air Magic and the others have Counterstrike and Airshield. Airshield with a bonus can be massive.
Edit: And of course everyone will prefer this or that hero's original version every now and then, that's inevitable. You can always delete the script of those you dont like.

I understand. IMO is good idea to give to weak heros better things to do, but if you can keep key heros intact, then is better. Brissa, Luna and Mephala are very powerful heros and everyone likes them.

I left 1 Mysticism, 2 Eagle Eye heroes as they are for variety and flavor. In future versions I may switch the scout from Mephala to Elleshar but I like Elleshar, I used to play with him as a beginner, I thought Intelligence specialty was awesome, heh.. One of the Bloodlust specialists may be modified, maybe Xsi (Stoneskin) can be a Bone Dragon specialist.. We have Darkstorn on Stoneskin anyway and every Dungeon monster has a specialist. Other than that, I am running out of weak heroes I'd be happy to listen to ideas btw, people with different favorite heroes may bring some perspective. I'd never imagine someone would consider Luna one of the well-liked heroes.

I haven't downloaded it yet, but on screenshots I can see that some magic heroes' summary of skill points equals once 5 (like in original), but sometimes 6 or 4. And that's not very balanced. The same you had with Conflux and you know how elementalists kicked ass - not only because of specialties.

Updated:
Luna stays as she is (Fire Wall), Disrupting Ray goes to Brissa (originally Haste), and Air Shield goes to Xsi (originally Stone Skin).
@Hobbit: I never added any primary skills, only switched some if a level 5 specialist needed more knowledge to cast at least one time, so if a hero has 6 primary skill points in total, the original one has 6 points too. Edit: Guess I was clumsy with Merist, will fix it in next version.
Also added Recommended Wog Settings DAT file, but except for turning on Rebalanced Hero Abilities, you can pretty much go for anything you like, it is for playing random maps after all.

Because in SoD he's a ranger.
Besides - IMO 1/3/1/1 for a magician is somehow useless, even with advanced earth magic. Leveling up wouldn't change a lot.

Hmm, I thought the B2/x script (change hero class) would even that out in a few levels but actually it is not a bad idea to modify starting primary skills according to class. I'll do it, thanks.
Edit: Updated, Ryland and Aeris have adjusted starting primary skills according to their classes. Also Hero Specialization boost now works on the following modified heroes (with proper description):
Daremyth (Blind)
Sephinroth (Medusas)
Xsi (Air Shield)
Olema (Fire Shield)
