Questions..
I have played Heroes 3 so much that now it seems quite boring for me I mean, I started to play it when I was kid so it was about 10 years ago Now I'm considering should I get Heroes 6 and play it...
I think it is not good idea to try HoMM4 or HoMM5 because HoMM6 is available so maybe the best strategy is going to straight the newest one? I'm just wondering that will I enjoy the game if I have only experience with HoMM3... I would like to know is the AI in Heroes6 dumb or does it have any challenge in comparison with HoMM3? How about multiplayer? I haven't played HoMM3 multiplayer at all so I don't have much for the quality of multiplayer games... Does the multiplayer in Homm6 work properly or does it have a lot of problems with connections etc...? And is it free ?
I can see that they have slightly changed the name which is bit disappointing in my opinion Is HoMM-series going to be dead recently? What do you guys thing?
I have also thought about leaving HoMM-series for a while and going for Civilization.. Is that good idea at all ?
Well it was a little messy message but I hope it will start a good conversation

A lot of people found HVI to be very dissapointing - for one or several reasons - while some others like it (or at least enjoy it). It's up to you to decide to try it or not...but before I'll tell you this:
- The AI is dumb, very dumb.
- There were a lot of multiplayer issues at the launch of the game (the servers were down many times), but it got better after.
- A portion of the players have been having a lot of crash/freeze issues with the game since the two last patches (1.7-1.8). It is expected to have a 2.0 patch to fix everything, but it's not guaranteed that the patch will leave the game bug-free. HVI has a bad history with bugs and patches.

Every heroes is different in its own way. H4 was the black sheep of the family due to its radical departure from H3 gameplay so you might or not like it. H5 was pretty close to H3 with a more interesting skill system, more diverse lineups and deeper combat. Was also more random than H3 ^^ H6 was very hit or miss. You might like it for what it has to offer but it only has 5 factions and a number of unpopular design desicions so.. Tread at your own risk. AI was ok last I remember and multiplayer is almost nonexistent. Many players were driven away due to game bugs and the aforementioned reasons. Might improve a bit with the dungeon addon but I am not holding my breath. And yes it's free.
Rest assured that heroes is not dying despite what some naysayers may tell you H6 however is a different story entirely.

Oh these points weren't convincing at all Doesn't look good at all so maybe I will think more before buying it. One question more about single playing, does HoMM6 have a lot of unique user-made-maps like HoMM3 had? An unique means like something really great like "The empire of the world" and "The lord of war" in HoMM3 ?
E: and I totally agree with HoMM4! I have seen some pictures and videos of it and they were... quite terrible in comparison with HoMM3 It's weird that the 3D0 (or new world computing?) dared to release it Well, of course some will enjoy

An absolutely no. H6 map editor is a nightmare and very few maps have seen the light (compared to H3 or H4, for example).
+1 to Elvin, get Tribes of East, you'll enjoy it

In my opinion H6 is the best game of the franchise, and I played them all. However this opinion is not shared by the majority of these forums, so take it with a grain of salt.
In Heroes 4, focus was shifted from armies to Heroes. Heroes could directly fight in the combat and perish(or drink immortality potions), army could go on. Necropolis and Inferno were merged to one Death faction and you could choose between say, ghost dragons or devils. Creatures had no upgrade. Single player campaign was great apparently, but the game itself went a bit far from H3.
Heroes 5 Tribes of the East is a great game in design and its core mechanics are very close to H5. Skill acquisition is random, but very deep, with lots of faction specific skills. Factions are very diverse, however each one only has one hero cpass, eg. Inferno - Demonlord, no magic heavy class.
I got put off by the game's graphics, its just too immature and anime for my tastes. Visuals and animations are great, btw.
Heroes 6 has lots of changes and departures from H3.
Personally,
Pros:
RPG style skill system(many people hate it but). Hero gets a skill point each level and can assign it to any skill or spell.
Awesome style, graphics, animations
Area of Control - controlling a fort or a castle gives you control over all mines in the area. Enemy hero may no longer permqmently capture it.(unless he captures town)
Fun campaign with personal feel
Variety of combat arenas
Fun bosses, online duels, dynasty(online) weapons, etc.
Reputation system - Tears/Blood, love it!
Cons
intrusive DRM
Online cloud save system is not working properly
You may experince variety of bugs, glitches, crashes, etc - or may not.I got lucky
No mage guilds
lack of class specific skills/spells(there are unique hero spells, three tier system, 5 spells in total)
Game support is very poor
Online scene is not very active, very hard to find games
No RMG/Simturns(i dont care about either, but most people do)
Ita up to you now, but I really enjoy the game and played more then 500 hrs so far(and I dont play games a lot overall)

you must be joking in these topics
The campaigns are bad.. That's not even a personal opinon but a general one. They are just BAD, and by BAD I mean REALY BAD
And Bosses.. There are literary 3 interesting boss fights, two of them are from DLCs and in the third one the boss is under your comand.

No I'm not joking, I repeat myself again it is my personal opinion of the campaign - I loved the plot, the storyline was engaging with unexpected twists, personal struggles were presented well, and overall it is the only Heroea campaign I have ever completed because to me it was very very fun.

While I can somewhat agree with the campaign (with some exceptions), I can't say I felt the bosses very much. By the time I get to them I've snowballed waaaaay out of their power levels. Usually.

@heroes_player: {I will break my "personal boycott" of posting in this sub-forum for this}
The answer really depends on what type of player you are because that will be the main determinant I feel.
Anyway, I think your best choice at this moment would be to get Might&Magic Heroes Complete compilation which is everything H1-H5 including all expansions (except the heroes chronicles from H3). I got this for like quarter of retail price of new game before.
Now details: answer mainly depends on your preferences:
How much MP do you play? If so, how much online vs hotseat & how competitive?
How much is RPG aspect (levelling up heroes with choices etc) important to you vs the strategy/tactics aspect? & how much time you spend thinking on strategy/tactics vs more casual play.
How much campaign do you play vs custom maps vs RMG?
How much are you willing to play online connected to internet even in SP?
If you played H3 a lot in SP & liked a lot of the strategy/tactics, then your best bet is H5TotE (stand-alone expansion of H5) with the Quantomas AI mod. (newer revision coming soon I imagine) [without this AI mod, large maps with many AI opponents slow to a crawl due to waiting for AI turn]
If you really like SP RPG aspects & multiple heroes in your party, H4 with both expansions & Equilibris mod is not bad. AI hero build-up is dumb but many custom-made maps I think has AI hero start at high level like 15 so as to make a challenge when you finally meet them.
[some players like to just creep & fight neutral monsters to build up their superheroes]
If you don't mind having to be connected to internet while SP & like the thought of dynasty weapons (weapons that your one main hero starts off with that gets more powerful abilities with more xp) & if good chance not to get those freezing bugs/issues, then you might want upcoming H6SoD expansion which is a stand-alone expansion (doesn't require H6 original). SP strategy/tactics wise, H6 final may "eventually seem" comparable with H5TotE/H3 even though there are some more bugs & it seems to attract the more casual, non-strategic thinking type player.
Some missing H6 features: read Cepheus & Elvin's posts here
My main H6 original gripes were listed here
Mainly MP: H4, H5TotE both good (so is H3 ofc). [I heard H6 MP online has problems with Ubi connection & ofc there is no LAN option in that game]
Custom-made maps heaps for H3/H4, much less for H5, virtually none for H6.
ofc don't have to remove your H3. Out of H3-6, H3 has fastest AI. Out of H3-6, H3 has best AI except for H5TotE Quantomas mod. "The empire of the world" and "The lord of war" in HoMM3 equivalents do not exist in H4-6.
If you wait long enough, H1-6 collection will eventually be available
It's interesting Dave_James comments about campaign & bosses because it appeared previously he always supported H6 (or was that maybe he didn't like some others always harping on always negatively)

@SKPRIMUS
I have my fair share of things I dislike about Heroes VI (the bosses in the vanil game and the story are just few of them). The list might be surprisingly long for people who see me write here.
It is true that I have often defended the game. But the reason for that was not that I like or dislike the game, or that I think it is good or bad, but for the reason that I think the game does not deserve as much hate as it is recieving.

Quote: Rest assured that heroes is not dying despite what some naysayers may tell you
Usually I like your posts, but I really don't even see how you can state this after seeing all the communities being deserted over time because of Ubisoft's failureS - yes, capital S because there are a lot and I can't see how they'll ever fix what they've undone.
1. They failed to make a good H6 after failing to make a good H5 and that, despite all their empty promises.
2. They failed to unify the community(ies) by trying to create their own community and working against the existing ones. Just look at the activity of most communities, the Heroes topics are scarce and it's mostly always the same 5 or 6 people talking and turning in circles. The worst part being that their own board isn't the most active either ...
3. They failed to create an interesting universe with an interesting storyline with interesting characters. Everything in Ashan is plain overdone ... Sometimes I even regret Axeoth
4. They even failed at communicating with the playerbase ... seriously, does anyone (non-VIP) really have the feeling there's an x-pack being released in about a month ? Because I don't ... No communication, no hype, there's just a whole lot of ... nothing around this game.
I'm usually not a naysayer (else I wouldn't be a moderator in the French Heroes community anymore), but like many others, for me the M&M franchise has died because I refuse to trust Ubisoft anymore. They've had enough time to prove themselves and they failed. All they've done was alienating the communities by not caring about their opinions and feedbacks and by only trying to milk us through overpriced (and dull) DLCs or pay-to-win games.
Seriously, how long are you willing to give Ubisoft a chance ? When H5 proved to be bad, they said it was their first try ... ok, we could trust them. Then we got a crappy Farmers of Hate and finally TotE which was as H5 should have been at release ... but too late, since the harm was done.
Afterwards, we got a crappy H6 that nailed the coffin. Again, they went "oh it was the first time we worked with Blackhole" ... Seriously ?
Now that they fired Blackhole, are we really supposed to hope that they'll do any better with H7 and another developer ? If they fail again will we wait for H8 then H9 ? Just stop that non-sense.

A lot of argumentative posts so far, I like it About my gameplay I would play mostly single player games because the lack of free time but of course I have some weekend to enjoy MP as well but sometimes these weekends are needed to fulfil other goals
About H1 and H2, I think that they won't be competitive against H3 in my opinion, especially because H3 was my first HoMM-game I have ever played So maybe it's not profitable to get them And about H4 I think that I'm quite sure that I wouldn't like it.. So I would choose H5 or H6
I think that I would enjoy these both from what I have seen from the youtube videos because the moving in the map look more different Also, it is good that I don't know anything about creatures so I can have a first experience with them and seek for the best tactics to each of them. So far I have read from here, it seems like that H5 is more profitable than H6 and they are both quite same-looking so... Does it have a stand-alone expansion like H6 has or do I need to buy the complete ? The prices for the game is low nowadays so not much problem with that

Oh ubi has screwed up on most conceivable levels and H6 was a disappointment for being just decent. But really.. H4 was a big screw up in my eyes too, throw in a bit of everything and see what comes out. I do not consider H5 a failure, it was a lot of fun in its own way and even surpassed H3 in a matter of things even if it did have its share of flaws. But after H5 things went south, the guys in charge of H6 design apparently did not have much of a clue about what makes a heroes game and made some of the worst decisions imaginable. The so-called VIPs were a joke, we never had much of an impact on things. Just some feedback here and there, being informed too little, too late. Which in hindsight was not surprising, the game was lagging far behind and it was a race to even be half-playable by release.. Even with 5 delays heh. But really, wrong priorities ensured that the game was stillborn, it never had the chance to become good by heroes standards. There was a time when I was still hopeful about H6 but this has long since passed, the addon is loads of fun with the new faction and an enjoyable, nicely designed campaign but that's the end of the line. Or might as well be if sim turns, rmg or skill system reqork is not going to happen.
Yet despite all that times are a-changing.. And like all good changes it starts from within, sooner or later you will see what I mean. This is not a promise, just what I see and understand.

Yes H4 was a failure (even though it still has a lot of fans and active leagues), but we all know why it was a failure. With 3DO going bankrupt, they had to release it and scrap money, but Ubisoft doesn't really have that excuse ...

I don't know where you read that. It was clearly said from the start that it would not happen and that the x-pack would only add the new Dungeon skills.
