Random noob with a lot of questions

The title says it all.

I have lurked around forever reading a lot of these threads here. I am yet another player who has played against the AI for like 7 years and thinks he knows everything but actually sucks.
So I recently finally got into this game with a friend who I am now regularly playing against. We are both quite bad so it's a perfect opportunity. We play with no rules even though we know there are several overpowered or dumb things in the game, we decided we will keep them legal until one of us learns to really abuse it. That way we can experience those problems ourselves and better understand why things are the way they are. We recently banned Conflux with this method.
Anyways I got a lot to ask so I hope there are still good, helpful people around to answer me, I hope I didn't log in to the boards a few years late.

1. People still play?
Can I expect to find some people who could play with me or perhaps mentor me to become a better player? I've heard that playing against great players who destroy you buy week 3 is by far the fastest way to learn to play well.

2. Random templates...
We always play randoms, but the default templates give unbalanced maps most of the time, more than half of our games were decided by the map generator. And I mean retarded stuff like my opponent spawning near a cartographer that is barely guarded or when he found 3 confluxes in like the first week.
I know there are many templates to download, but I would prefer if I could make my own so I could play to my own tastes. Templates like Jebus and whatever there are don't sound too interesting to us.
The thing is I want to be able to remove confluxes and such from randoms.

3.Are there supposed to be so many neutral towns around? Most of the time we will both find like 3 towns in the first week and it feels kinda pointless even choosing a starting town when we find all the cool ones on the first week. Is this supposed to be like this and can I lower the amount using templates?

4.I usually buy like 3-4 heroes on first day. For a few days this is fine, but almost always after that I find the map is closed by some guards which is very limiting and most of the time my heroes are idling around, not being productive, making it annoying having hired them. How should I deal with this one? I don't want to risk a tough battle just so my 3 idle heroes can move forward like 10 tiles before being blocked by another monster.

5.Am I supposed to just kill the monsters with my main and then leave the treasure for my scouts to gather? I watched some videos and read stuff that this is the way to go.

6.If there are like 5 different places for me to uncover how do I know which ones are the most likely to be the best? I hate it when I waste half a day with a scout only to find a dead end with a stack of harpies guarding a spell scroll.

7.I play Fortress with Tazar as a main most of the time. Any specific tips for me? I play 130%. Should I just leave the gnolls unbought?

8.Which starting bonus should I usually take?

I know I have more so I'll ask if someone actually answers one of these.
And if anyone wants to play or just chat I'd be happy to do it.

Some answers

Yes, People do still play.

I have no knowledge of random templates, Never knew about them untill now despite having played Heroes 3 for nearly my whole life...

For me i'm lucky if i find even 2 castles near me in a random map, I don't know why...

I usually use 1 hero through an entire game, As for the guards i usually just fight them after getting a decent army.

Only have other heroes gather the treasure if your sure that your scouts can get there before the opponent.

The areas most likely to be the best are areas not underground, Other than that you can't really tell.

When going Fortress I recommend getting Mighty Gorgons ASAP, Never really used Tazar.

I usually just buy the gnolls.

As for the starting bonus i usually pick the artifact one, Resources just don't come close to how good it is.

Hope i was of some help.

1. People still play?

yes.
In Gameranger.com people play classic SOD/Complete, but rarely do screen sharing.
In WT (heroeswt.net) people play modified version of homm3 and often do screen sharing.
You can study from saves of other players. You can download them e.g. from WCL (heroes-iii.com), 2 links for pages on WCL main page.

yes you can create or modify template with tools like TextEditor. but not all settings or restrictions are possible; i would suggest  you to use "rules" instead.

in template you can set 1 town in starting zone and hard guard to another zone. So, you will sit in starting zone as long as you like. E.g. you can set guard ~20 dragons to another zone which is impossible to defeat on week 1 on poor template

the best place is the road. go until you will find strong guard blocking the road.
If you see another zone near your hero, it means that your zone will end soon, with dead end. Often you will find mine in such dead end. But you normally don't need mines in multiplayer games.
Try to select wide area for your scout so he will be able to change direction of route if there will be block on the way.

so how you plan to fight on week 1 without gnolls???
2 wyverns are not enough.
Tazar with gnolls can get 1 angel in minimum Conservatory on day 1.
Quote:

8.Which starting bonus should I usually take?

depends on towns/difficulty/template/map size.
130% means that you don't need GOLD bonus.
Dungeon or Rampart may need RESOURCE bonus, however on 130% most people will take ART bonus.

If I ever feel like playing a modified version, I'll start playing WoG again, so I'd prefer vanilla people to play with. And what do you mean by screensharing? Oh and are there any new people around or do I have to get owned by veterans for an eternity?

We don't like to use rules, if at all possible we would like to disable things entirely. It would be unfair if my opponent had 3 Confluxes nearby and he couldn't do anything about them while I had 3 other towns I could freely build. I understand why some rules are needed.

How do I make a template like that then? I don't understand a thing with thousands of lines or random values.

And I thought mines were one of the most important things in the game. Is this for rich templates only? I don't play such maps.

I've read from other sources that buying gnolls is a waste of money but I guess I was wrong. And how am I supposed to clear cons with so few gnolls?

And should we play 160-200% instead of 130%?

i mean that Russians often share their screens to spectators, so you can watch and study from their games. There are programs for screen sharing, like Mikogo

don't expect that veterans will be much willing to play with you. Experienced online players, in general, don't like winning vs noobs, this is too easy.

there is more easy option - pay Angelito and he will create template of your dreams

this is for any template, rich or poor.
mines are useless because you get very little resource from them and it takes LOOOONG time. more easy option is to get resource from banks or explore more zones and collect free resources.

from beginning you have ~15 gnols from main hero + ~15 from secondary hero + 12 from town = 42
other possible sources of gnols:
- secondary Fortress town/castle (e.g. on Balance temp you always have second native town)
- external dwelling (e.g. on Jebus i could collect 8-10 external gnol dwellings)
- pandora box (pretty common)
- prison with native hero
with 60-70 gnols it's possible to clear min cons.

130 or 160. i don't recommend 200% for online

Does anyone know which .def file in h3sprite.lod contains the animation for Bloodlust spell?
I want to modify it, but can't find amongst the other spell animations.

@Sag
It would be kinda dumb if veterans wouldn't play with me, isn't it amazing for such an old game to get new players? They should try to make sure they stay around for more than a week.

Not really, veterans avoid greens for valid reasons, a green is more likely to disappear in middle game, talks a lot, hurry the other to finish turns, often offer no challenge and loudly yells about cheating when butt spanked.

But when you have some 50-100 games in your record, your level isn't anymore a trigger to get games, players will thrust you.

Well I admit that I talk a lot, but why would people consider it a bad thing? Other than that I am not a rage quitter, I don't accuse anyone of cheating or anything dumb and I really listen to my superiors and believe what they say. Oh well I guess this is the one rotten apple ruins the whole basket thing.
I guess I have to deal with just playing around with my friends, but recently we have been unable to play because he is "receiving map headers from host" forever.

Well, constantly having chat popped in your eyes "where are you from?", while you try to beat a conservatory with 30 gnolls isn't the dream of any player.

I have a quick noob question of my own. Is there anyway for a player to access a terrain feature they are standing on. I constantly see the computer pop through a subterrainian gate, realize they can't fight the gaurdian on the otherside and pop back through. Is it possible for human players to do the same or are we just out of luck? if it is possible how do you do it? I can't seem to figure out any controls to allow me to do so

Gameranger and WCL dont contradict each other. Infact, most of the WCL registered games are played via gameranger.

Look what Salamandre wrote above. WCL record makes sure you are not considered one of this persons.

All right I've played more and more of this game and I think I've improved quite a bit. My games have started to actually end around the month instead of 3 now and I play a little more efficiently.
But if I play Fortress, I will spawn on swamp and swamp doesn't have crypts. So where do I get my money to do stuff?
And with Rampart or Castle you have your great shooters to take care of everything, but I can't do that with Fortress. How do I fight stuff without many losses without the great shooters?

Lots of Text!

Hmm, Never really depended on Crypts for money.

My games end on either the 4th or the 2nd month, But i mostly play campaigns.

Dragon flies are great for taking care of stuff, However they are semi weak when actually being attacked, Mighty Gorgons + Dragon Flies are my main source of strength early on however.

Wyverns can help as well, Don't usually use them though.

I don't usually use Castle or Rampart.

And with castle I've never found either of the shooters being great, Marksmen are only slightly better than Lizardmen and Zealots die way to easy for how few you get of them, Rampart has only elves for shooters and though their good they don't work very well for preventing losses.

For great shooters I'd say Conflux, Tower and Dungeon are the best, Storm and Ice Elementals are pretty good.

Arch Magi and Titans come later on but are pretty good, And at the beginning you can have Master Gremlins.

Dungeon has it's Evil Eyes and Medusa Queens which are low damage but still do the job, Later their not even needed though.

Stronghold doesn't get decent shooters until they can build the Cyclops dwelling, Orcs really don't do very good.

Fortress does have Lizardmen which aren't that bad, Their just not very good.

Necropolis has Liches which are very good, I dislike using undead however.

Inferno doesn't need good shooters, It's Magogs can really do good against some troops but it's main advantage are it's Demons and Devils(Though Pit Lords really die easy...)

Castle's main advantage comes from Archangels, It can be pretty weak until you get them however.

Rampart's Grand Elves are great but their only one type of troop, They can't take care of everything however.

For minimizing losses i recommend using Dragon Flies and Wyverns early on and getting Mighty Gorgons ASAP.

I've never used Tazar cause i usually use Korbac, Serpent/Dragon Flies are my favorite troop.

Second favorite is Mighty Gorgons, Third favorite is Devils.

My least favorite? Imps.

I got a bit carried away with talking about shooting troops and each castle's main advantage.

Hydras are good once you get them but their pretty slow, They don't Fortress as much strength as the top level troops in other castles do(Dungeon, Castle and Inferno just to name a few), Fortresses main strength comes from Mighty Gorgons and how easy it is to get Wyverns early on.

It depends on what you fight on whether or not you want to bring out things like Mighty Gorgons, One castle Fortress has more trouble with is Necropolis(Mighty Gorgon's death stare has no effect on undead so you can't depend on it).

Better finish this post before i start comparing flying troops in castles or something...
