Next-Gen Consoles
So..We Are, in 2013.. Let' see what we'll get :
PlayStation 4
PlayStation E3 Press Conference 2013
Release Date 2013 Q4
Price : 400 USD, 400 Eur, 350 GBP
Info ( From WIkipedia ): he PlayStation 4 (Japanese: プレイステーション4 Hepburn: Pureisutēshon Fō?, officially abbreviated as PS4) is an upcoming video game console from Sony Computer Entertainment. Announced as the successor to the PlayStation 3 during a press conference on February 20, 2013, the PS4 is expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2013, and will compete with Nintendo's Wii U and Microsoft's Xbox One.
Moving away from the Cell architecture, the PlayStation 4 will be the first in the Sony series to feature compatibility with the x86-64 instruction set, which is a widely used platform common in many modern PCs. This is intended to make video game development easier on the next-generation console, attracting a broader range of developers. These changes highlight Sony's effort to improve upon the lessons learned during the development, production and release of the PS3. Other notable hardware features of the PS4 include 8 GB of unified memory in the form of GDDR5, a faster Blu-ray Disc drive, and dedicated custom chips for processing audio, video and background downloading.
Among new applications and services, Sony plans to release the PlayStation App, allowing PS4 owners to turn smartphones and tablets into a second screen to enhance gameplay. The company also plans to debut Gaikai, a cloud-based gaming service that hosts downloadable content and games. By incorporating a share button on the new controller and making it possible to view in-game content being streamed live from friends, Sony plans to place more focus on social gameplay.

Nintendo WII U
Release date : 2012 November 18 North America
2012 November 30 Europe, Australia
2012 December 08 Japan
Info ( From Wikipedia ):The Wii U (pron.: /ˌwiː ˈjuː/) is a video game console from Nintendo and the successor to the Wii.[7] The system was released on November 18, 2012 in North America, November 30, 2012 in Europe and Australia, and on December 8, 2012 in Japan.[8][9] It is the first entry in the eighth generation of video game home consoles,[10][11][12] (although some industry figures have disputed its exact classification[13][14][15][16]) and will compete with Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One.
The Wii U is the first Nintendo console to support high-definition graphics, capable of producing video output up to 1080p, and has 2 GB of RAM with half dedicated to the console's operating system.[17] The console was released in two versions:[18] a "Basic" white-colored version with 8 GB of internal Flash storage; and a "Deluxe"/"Premium" black-colored version with 32 GB of Flash storage. The Deluxe package additionally includes stands for the console and for the GamePad, a charging dock for the GamePad, and a pack-in game. An HDMI cable is included with both versions.[9] The Wii U's primary controller is the Wii U GamePad, which features an embedded touchscreen. The touchscreen is used to supplement the main gameplay shown on the television or, with games supporting Off TV Play, can allow the player to continue playing games by displaying the main gameplay even when the television is off. In addition to the Wii U GamePad, a more traditional controller, called the Wii U Pro Controller, may be used.[19]
The system is backward compatible with Wii, and Wii U games may support compatibility with Wii peripherals, such as the Wii Remote and the Nunchuk. While it is not backward compatible with Nintendo GameCube discs or peripherals,[20] Nintendo of America's director of entertainment and trend marketing indicated that select GameCube titles would become available for download,[21][22] although Nintendo has since stated it has nothing to announce regarding this.[23]
OUYA
Release Date : 2013 June 25
Info ( From Wikipedia ):The Ouya (pronounced /ˈuːˌjə/ oo-yah; stylized "OUYA")[4] is a video game console running its own version of the Android operating system. Julie Uhrman, a game industry veteran,[5] founded the project in 2012.[6] She brought in designer Yves Béhar to collaborate on the design of the project,[7] and Muffi Ghadiali as product manager to put together the engineering team.[8] Development was funded via Kickstarter, raising $8.5 million and becoming the website's second-highest-earning project in its history. Units started to ship to Kickstarter backers on March 28, 2013. The console is due to be released to the general public on June 25, 2013.[9]
The Ouya will feature an exclusive Ouya store for applications and games designed specifically for the Ouya platform. Out of the box, Ouya will include the TwitchTV application and access to the OnLive video game streaming service.[6] Initially it is expected to run on a modified version of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and be open to rooting without voiding the warranty (developer models ordered during the Kickstarter campaign for $699 or $1,337 will come pre-rooted).[6] The console's hardware design will allow it to be easily opened up, requiring only a standard screwdriver to allow easy modding and possible hardware addons.[10]
All systems can be used as development kits, allowing any Ouya owner and gamer to also be a developer, without the need for licensing fees. All games will be required to have some kind of free-to-play aspect,[6] whether that be completely free, has a free trial, or has purchasable upgrades, levels, or other in-game items. Ouya's main competitor is the GameStick.
nVIDIA Project Shield
Release Date: 2013 June North America
Price : 350 USD
Info ( From Wikipedia ): The Nvidia Shield is an upcoming Android-based handheld game console manufactured by Nvidia which was first announced at CES 2013 on 7 January 2013,[3][4] and is set to be released in North America in June 2013.[5]
Hardware [edit]
The prototype devices shown by Nvidia in January 2013 are similar in form to a Xbox 360 controller, with two analog joysticks, a D-pad, and other buttons. The unit features a flip-up 5-inch (130 mm) touchscreen display[6] which displays a 1280x720 pixel resolution
PC game streaming [edit]
The console allows for the streaming of games running on a compatible desktop or laptop PC.[8] This function allows certain Windows games to be played via the SHIELD and is similar to Sony's Remote Play.
GameStick
Release Date : 2013 July 09
Info ( From Wikipedia ): The GameStick is an upcoming video game console developed by PlayJam. The size of a flash drive, it is meant to be plugged directly into a television, with no other cables or connectors. The GameStick connects wirelessly to one or more controllers via Bluetooth and to the internet via Wi-Fi. It will run on the Android platform and feature downloadable or, potentially, streaming games. The GameStick is meant to be a portable system with a budget price of $79. Like the similar Ouya, it was funded via Kickstarter. It is slated to be released on July 9, 2013.
WikiPad
( Actually, not a console ! )
Release Date : TBA 2013
Info ( From Wikipedia ): The Wikipad is an enterprise and video gaming tablet, running Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), from an independent Los Angeles-based company called Wikipad, Inc. It was first shown at CES 2012 in January and was slated to be released on October 31, 2012[1] through GameStop, Walmart, Amazon.com, Target, and Best Buy. The tablet will be aimed at gaming and features a detachable controller with dual-analog sticks.
The Wikipad is able to get thousands of games from the Google Play library, as well as original PlayStation titles via PlayStation Mobile, and games streamed from Gaikai. The new version of the tablet will debut Spring 2013 at USD $249 with a 7" screen, NVIDIA Tegra mobile processor with quad-core CPU and 5th battery-saver core and high-performance 12-core NVIDIA GPU, built-in 16GB flash memory with MicroSD slot that supports up to 32GB, and has one 2MP front camera.[2]

San Diego – June 11, 2013 – Mad Catz Interactive, Inc. (“Mad Catz” (NYSE MKT: MCZ) announced today the Mad Catz M.O.J.O., an Android™ Micro Console configured to harness the maximum gaming horsepower from an Android device expected to ship Holiday 2013.
“M.O.J.O. is basically a supercharged smart phone with no screen that plugs into your flat screen TV to bring the living room experience to mobile gaming. A true, console quality controller, the C.T.R.L.R features both BluetoothŸ classic and Bluetooth Smart (4.0) technology which provides ultra-low latency, interference free gaming and exceptional battery life. PC master race.
I think the PS4 will win the "console war", XBOX One looks like Microsoft's attempt at business suicide.
The SHIELD is a totally redundant piece of hardware, maybe good if you wanna play your games on the bathroom, not really anything more.
The Gamestick thingy looks quite interesting actually, fun idea.
...
As for Next-Gen it's a phrase coined by publishers to describe how effing awesomely high-tech and FUTURE their products are, mostly concerning the graphics. It kinda lost its weight a few years ago imo.
Crysis was next-gen, nothing has really been next-gen since then. Maybe Metro 2033 and its sequel.

Watch Dogs could be next gen, none of the other games I've seen strike me that way though. I agree both with the PC Master Race (well, laptop ) and that the PS4 will probably win the console war.

I thought Sony would continue to lose ground in the war against the Black Archwizard Bill Gates, but I guess XBox One is looking pretty disappointing atm so maybe Playstation 4 will perform well.
I know these companies invest millions into their marketing research, which tells me that they know something that I don't, but I still feel like they live in some kind of isolated bubble with the way they babble nonstop about all of the bull**** icing-on-top features that come with a console as though it were the giant ham sitting in the middle of the table. I mean seriously, corn and biscuits are nice and all, but everybody is staring and drooling over that mother****ing ham. Talk about the ham dammit. Here's how you do it: 1. Show people how awesome and affordable it is for playing games. 2. Sell game consoles. 3. Give high fives all around. 4. Call it a day.
The PS3 was probably the last console I'll ever buy unless I'm buying one for a kid some day. Not really much interest in lieu of the PC. I'm not sure what the specs are like in the upcoming consoles but AFAIK Sony relies on a more expensive, higher spec console whereas XBox goes for the econo strategy of a cheap console to pull in a larger audience, and Nintendo pulls in the energetic adolescents.

Xbox One wasn't even presented as a gaming console so I'm going with PS4. I won't ever a buy a console myself though. Why do that when you can connect your PC to a TV and use a wireless controller? Much cheaper for more power.

There's not going to be a generic system for covering all of these purposes until they can perfect quantum computing, which is still facing a lot of challenges right now with rapidly overheating. It's simply not possible to enjoy high-spec gaming on a tablet/mobile. There needs to be a major breakthrough in hardware first before you can stick your pocket-sized phone into the TV and play Farcry 3 on max settings (and beyond).

It's always better to wait until the new generation consoles have been out a while. They always come out with better models in a year or two that are also cheaper.
I'll probably be getting a PS4 eventually, but not until the kinks are worked out and there is a nice library of games available.

I think I'd be better off spending the $300-$400 that a new console would run me and upgrading my rig.
That said, I may cave and pick up a WiiU for the new Smash Brothers game. I absolutely LOVE that series. Along with Heroes, it is one of the series I will go out of my way to upgrade a system to play.
EDIT: Mega Man confirmed for new Smash Brothers game. Well, there goes the idea of not buying a new console.
