3 levels, adding sky!
Hi there!
What about adding sky as a level to play on as we today have the underworld as the second level, we could have sky above!

Come on be wise!
this is a god idea but it won't be succesful. When ę think of this ędea how the hero will fly? wtih the flying creatures or a skill? or by an artifact? I dn't think that this would be successful!

2 level
I think 2 level is enough.
What do you think about fly creatures during combat? You can shot them only with ballista or shooters or magic...

Okey here goes...
Homm is supposed to be from the ancient times.
There wouls be "spaced" if they would add a 3.lever sky. Artifact that could make them fly? Why don't you give them an airplane?? No heroes can't fly. Except with the angel wings which I don't like either, but no fight in the air !!
Yes hurragutten I am Norweagian too.

I agree that the levels are good as they are..
But how exactly do you plan for the flying creatures to attack.. if they can't be attacked by other than ballista and shooters..?!? What I mean is that to attack the flying creatures have to descend from the skies... Giving the defending unit a chance to retaliate..! Neh?

If flying creatures are included, other flying creatures should certainly be alowed to attack them.

personally I dont think we need any additional planes. In fact i dont even like subterranean! Just stay with the surface level.

Come on people !
Come on !! We've talked about this almost a year ago,
we didn't like it then, and we certanly have not
changed our minds ! I think I am speaking for most
people here when I am saying that 2 levels are
enough, personally I don't like the sub-level,
but...I guess I'll just have to deal with it...

There is nothing wrong with more layers and bigger maps.
Also different layers can be useful for a mapmaker as it is a fairly secure way to separate land or enforce that you really have to travel to the other plan using a certain gate (Teleporter/ Subterranean).
The alternative is having to insert voids or huge mountain ranges or other things which are just there for the scenery.
In my opinion layer (if introduced and expanded upon) shouldn't be overland or underland, instead the layers are different realms.
The realms could have rules that makes them unique.
Like giving a certain faction bonuses or changing certain things about how they game normally work. For instance populations/creatures could grow faster or slower, creatures could be faster or slower and so on. The rules of a realm would be script based, and just needs a few options to give a great variety in game-play.
All of these effects would be global to the realm and applied equally to friends and foes when they're within the realm (layer). The added gameplay could motivate getting a few more layers.
I don't see much point in either the underground or the sky 'layer'. The designers have to spend a lot of time doing new and specific scenery to these environements, scenery which duplicates function in the normal layer and are needed in the new layer too.
What I'd like to see is that the game contains full complements of scenary for the normal terrain types. Then the map designer places the scenary as appropriate in the different layers. (But no scenary is developed just because of adding a 'special' layer.)
You should also realize that heroes 4 kind of has a sky level, since it's possible to have elevated terrain and slopes. This adds a second level of design on the existing layers. Flyers will probably enjoy greater mobility and choices than ground based troops on the adventure map.
Finally, map sizes are now much bigger in size than in heroes 3, so I doubt we need new layers for the sake of increasing the "adventure map size". Still it may be a good idea for a map to have several layers for a small sized map.
What speaks against several layers is otherwise that players may loose their orientation and be confused. This could probably be avoided or enhanced (if the map maker wants to confuse the player) by a well-made map.
There are some other threads which already discusses similar ideas, which I could bring back if you so desire.

I like the idea. Perhaps you can only traverse the cloud layer if you have an airship (that way your non flying units can continue with you up there). Of course, the map layer should remain brief and small since you already have 2 layers. It should be like a "mini layer" and not a full fledged area where you expect a lot of players/CPU to venture into. The other solution is to remove the underground layer completely, since it is arguably not all that interesting.
Have portals all over the land which lead to another plane, which would be a brief small "additional" map where you might have one small objective to kill the genie or air, or liberate the hostage hero or whatever.

or maybe have some 20 or more (i.e. unlimited number, i.e. more than i have fingers and toes) underground layers, so that you could construct complicated intertwining labyrinths with a tremendous amount of stairways. so that you could get lost there and the game would become sth like a puzzle rather.
i know some games have been bit annoying because of maze-like maps where you have to trouble yourself with figuring out how you can get from one spot to another. but maybe it's just too boring to become a challenge on it's own. i mean, if the labyrinth was really complicated instead of the relatively simple (and just annoying) ones that i have been unlucky enough to generate sometimes with rmg, maybe some ppl would enjoy that? not me probably, but who knows what marginal ppl might be out there..
