What happened to my dragons?
In H1 and 2, the Dragon or Black Dragon was a fearsome creature. You didn't want to face it across the battlefield. In H2, the dragon was the only creature to have two upgrades. It was rivaled by the Titan, but even then it was more powerful. Then came H3, where the dragons temporarily took a backseat to the Archangel. The correct order was restored somewhat with Armageddon's Blade, with Azures claiming the dragons' place at the top, but there were too many dragons. For all the mistakes H4 made, having the Black Dragon at the top was not one of them - although with Winds of War, they introduced the Megadragon, which was a mistake. In H5, it feels like the relative importance of Level 7 creatures has declined, and now the dragons aren't as important. I haven't played H6, my ancient computer is too weak to run it.
The game was much more fun when dragons were the best. I hope H7 will return to the old tradition in that respect.

Define your "best".
Though from your statement, i assume best as in most powerful combat prowess.
In that case, the only heroes game which dragon is not best is only in H3. In H4, i'd consider Megadradon as a better azure dragon, just look at the "Arc Breath Attack", no creatures in H1 to H6 have area attack as powerful as that, the only weakness of Megadragon is that it is not a flyer.
In H5, dragons are the top creatures, very few creatures beat black dragon in combat, only red dragon and magma dragon, both of which are dragons, and magma dragon is the most powerful dragon, no creatures can defeat it in a fair fight, even black dragon.
But black dragon in H6 is just like black dragon in H3, it lost to angels and cyclops in a fair fight, and win against the rest. Because H6 is mostly created in an attempt to copy many things in H3, whether it fail or not depends on each individual.
But it's odd that dragon become a recruitable creature, the dev originally said they are boss only creature, somehow the dev is not consistent, and inconsistency is often equal to incompetency. I don't really mind if it's a boss only creature or neutral only, imo it's better if they retain their dignity and status as the best rather than being downgraded like that.
I too long for the days when i was struck in fear and trembling seeing dragons as my opponent on the battlefield or the feeling of utter superiority just by bringing them on my side in the battlefield while the enemy doesn't have them.

Heroes 4 would have been much better if there was a Megadragon dwelling in the first place. (I know that Equillibris adds one, but still)

Maybe, but I'd personally count the Dungeon as a special case, given that the Warlocks have had Minotaurs and Dragons right from H1.

The Megadragon isn't a real dragon, it can't even fly. It's just an oversized lizard.

The Crystal Dragon from H3 couldn't fly either, yet I've never heard anyone say that didn't count. Besides, it does have a breath attack.

I'm new so I pretty much don't have anything to say yet. but I think Dragons had their glory and now its time for the Behemoths to take their place in the next HOMM game!
But maybe i'm just not a huge fan of dragons in the first place cuz everybody likes them.

Excuse me, but when did you get the "dragon = flies" mindset?
The aforemention Crystal Dragon doesn't fly, either.
As do dragons in, like, Dwarf Fortress and bajillion other games.
I'm sure that if it had wings it would be even more OP than it already is. (but then we have the Azure Dragon who can fly, can be recruited, has breath attack and fear and double the stats*, so what do I know)
* - I'm not exactly sure if it has twice its stats, but still

when did they say that?
People were only assuming,that no faction would get a dragon,because none of the original factions had a dragon(at least not a european).
And even if they said it,did they say it before shades of darkness?

In the original H6 no, only as a boss. However that doesn't mean that there won't be factions with a dragon champion in the future, like Marzhin remarked some factions just cannot exist without a dragon in their lineup
I think this is from Q&A from sometime before HoMM6 vanilla release.

So basically, "the vanilla won't see any factions with dragon champions, but expect at least one in the expansions".

If the Crystal Dragon had been the strongest dragon in H3, I wouldn't have liked that. Fortunately NWC also added the Azure Dragon, which was a proper dragon.
