So I Finally Got Around To Playing Shadow of Death
The campaigns, that is. And in playing Rise of the Necromancer, I realized that the devs simply had no idea how truly broken the CotUK really was. Like I feel like it's supposed to be more difficult than the preceding ones? But beating it without even building a single structure is trivial.
Stuff like this and Conflux make me wonder if NWC reached a point where they just didn't understand their own game anymore. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm super appreciative of them for making some of the best TBS and RPG games ever made, but damn...

Don't be too harsh - it's quite common for devs to not know their own game inside out. On one hand, they're playing with various approaches and trying different solutions. They will be familiar with some of them for a loong time. On the other, there are last minute fixes like Resurrection Potions in Heroes 4. It's hard to expect them finish the whole game again after each gameplay/balance change.
But after release, even developers need time to fully understand a more complex game and its metagame. Expansion packs often address balance issues (by adding skills/items which boost certain strategies or improve variety). But it would be very hard to include these changes in the base game, few people have this much foresight.

Lol, you two, I'm totally sure that campaign was always intended to be broken. It's a fun exaggeration to show you how powerful the combo artifacts you spent two whole campaigns collecting are, and it suits the character of Sandro.
When you play as the four heroes, especially on impossible difficulty, you get a hell of a challenge. The Sandro missions are a mindless, power crazy break from that formula, where you crush everything
