I think having a clue about what to do and then putting it in practice is really the tricky part...
Once you start something like a course or a job you're sure you want and you know you can do it, you know it leads to something even it is not easy...
But if you don't really know yet what you want, you can get yourself in a situation when you are unsure if anything fits for you after having tried different things, or, you think you want something but you are not looking at it like: "What can I really do, do I really have a talent for this?" and don't succeed... like I felt and experienced.
In school they rarely taught us to think about anything other than education, at least it was like that in my case, and so they do not talk about finding out what you're good at and to focus on that one thing, or area, or what you call it. But then again, is it really a good idea to have teenagers decide what they are good at ?... looking back, I can't say that I had a real clue about how it works.
For some of course, it works, they can get by, they study and get a degree and get a job in that field, and they may or may not be satisfied with what they get in the end, but no one ever says it's a straightforward process.
And when you think you're ready, you still have do things to get hired and if you get hired no one can guarantee you will have that job for X period of time or if you'll advance, it's not all up to you to decide... and no one really told me that when I was in school either
But right now, finding out I had a talent and pleasure in using the sicssors and razor was a good thing and right on time, since I could not continue my higher studies and I was really unsure if they led anywhere.
