What's this Andi? You've gone from toh elitist to tosser elitist?! Give me a break you lousy kraut.
For all of you who don't know what a tosser is, here goes.
A tosser is someone who "tosses someone else's salad."
To understand that, you'll have to watch Chris Rock's HBO concert, "Bigger and Blacker."
I really can't figure out a way to explain it without being banned 4 life.

Newbie Question about Playing Online
OK,
So I've played HOMM3 for a few weeks. I've worked my way through enough campaigns to understand how to beat the AI without much difficulty (who programmed the AI to leave a castle on Day 7 with my Heroes lurking nearby?)
Anyway, I want to try playing online with some other folks and have set myself up on the MSN gaming zone area. I'm ready to have my ass handed to me in a paper bag by some experience players, but before I do I just want to understand how these online campaigns work.
Specifically, what type of time committment is necessary to play over the net? When I'm playing AI, I can play for a while, stop and watch some TV, play some more, etc. But to clear a single scenario can takes hours and hours of playing time (I tend to plod along, though I'm learning to be more aggressive.) Do I need to set aside 3-5 hours of time to play somebody online? Do you set a time limit or is it just play until death? Can you stop a game and pick it up the next day? I'd love to start playing on TOH, but I doubt I'll have the time committment to spend long contiguous blocks of time against another person.
So, how's it work?

Online gaming
How long a game takes usually depends on how big map you play, who you play and how long turns you play. Yes, id say that a regular 1v1 game for me takes about 3h+ and that should be the minimum time you have to play in one block. Otherwise you have to save a game but many people like myself in most cases dont like saves. And if you think that you maybe dont have enough time to finish the game and you problably must save then you should point that out to your opponent before the game so he knows about it. Quit games/dropping is another "option" but if you do that you will get a bad reputation and will have a hard time finding games. In a online tournament i think you can be kicked out if you dont finish your games.
When it comes to turns i guess that the most common one is 4mins, in 4mins you usually have enough time to do what you want. But keep in mind that those 4mins is only counting when you move your heroes/is in town which means that time in battle isnt involved at all in those 4mins. So 4min turns can easily be 10mins when you are playing against someone who has many battles infront of him. When it comes to allied games i usually play 2min turns, sure i dont have enough time to do as i want and i cant use my 6-8 heroes to chain but the game doesnt take forever to finish. A 4min+ allied game can easily take 10h and no one wants to save an allied game because those rarely gets finished when saved.
There are players that play 1&2min turns for regular games too so if you are out for a faster game you should try to find a game with someone that agrees on those time limits.
I guess learn how to play really good is the tough part, as i see it there are two ways:
1) Play against a good player and keep saves from every day, that way you see where his heroes has moved but you cant see how they got there. But you will still learn very very much from it since you will see a pattern in how the heroes should be moved. You can also see which buildings he/she has built and on which days. The problem is that you will have a really hard time finding these games, for TOH almost no veterans wants to play a new player there because they are afraid of getting a cherry, losing to much points or they will just dont enjoy the game. Try to find someone who is willing to help you out with this, dont enter zone and say something like "I AM THE BEST, YOU SUCK! WHO WANTS TO DIE" because then youll go on the ignore list right away with those ppl that you need to play. Ask politley in zone if someone wants to help you. And if youre lucky someone is up for it.
The other way to learn is to play allied with a veteran, that way you see all his moves so now you will also know how he got there and if there is something you dont understand just ask. I can almost promise that you will be suprised how he could kill that pack of ogres day1 and thats prolly the worst part, you cant look in his fights so ask your allie for some hints. Like why he has 1 lvl 1 unit in the empty slots which he prolly has when he goes to battle. But to get an veteran allie is problably harder than get a game with one but sometime you should get the opportunity if you keep being polite.
Good luck!
/Stefan
Oh one other thing, if you have ROE, AB or SOD you must get the newest version to be able to play. And as long everyone has the newest versions you are compatible and there should be no probs.
Get newest versions here:

(you must replace the "@" with a regular "a" tho but because of censor i cant write to correct path)

Thank you for your reply, but can you be more specific? Before I posted, I read through as much of the TOH page as I could (I hate being a newbie and asking a FAQ when the answer is readily available) but I never found a place that answered my fundamental question: What is the time committment for playing a game online? Since it takes me several hours to clear a map playing AI, I can only imagine it takes longer to play against a human that isn't as stupid as the AI. Before I sit down to go icon vs icon against another player, I want to know what I should expect. I don't want to start a game, then a couple hours later say "It's been nice playing, but this is taking too long. I have to go." Know what I mean?
By the way, the reason I want to play online is because I'm hoping it's nothing like playing the com. I've found that beating the AI, while still fun, isn't particularly difficult to do. It's easy to exploit the mistakes the com makes (i.e., leaving a castle unguarded on Day 7)

Thanks Sir Stefan
I posted my follow up while you were posting a very helpful answer to my question. That's exactly the information I needed. I appreciate it, and I hope that when I have the time to play an online game, all you nice people will be a little merciful and say nice things to me as you evicerate my newbie heroes.

hello, I have been posting in the heroes community for a couple weeks now. I'm kinda a newbie, and I saw this topic, so I thought I would leave a message.
I am very impressed with this Heroes community. I have played Diablo 2 and Starcraft for a while (as well as Heroes 3), but those D2 and Starcraft forums are nothing compared to these HC boards. You guys in the HC, act so much more mature, and have alot of fun at the same time with "Do you speak..??", "once upon a time..", "Cat's Ann Summer's Party!" (lol).
There are people from so many places around the world here! (I'm from Houston Texas, USA by the way..)
well, once the multi-player patch comes out *ahem, I'm looking forward to meeting some of you in the Tournamet of Honor.
(btw, my favorite type of castle in Heroes 4 is the life one. You can't go wrong when there are angels fighting with you.)

I bought the HOMM3 trilogy package in January. I'm assuming this repackaged version would have all the patches by now. True? Or do I still need to need to visit that website to download more patches?
