Steam OS
Announced just a few minutes ago. An OS based on linux, they promise it will have better performance than Windows.

Well... Saves me 60 euros on an OS, if it's any good. 
90% of the games I play are on Steam. The other 10% is League.

I'm just kinda curious what they mean by "living room machines". It doesn't sound like any standard OS to me. If it is just a simple OS, I'll probably try it at least. Very interesting, though.

That "living room machines" part is a little suspicious. Looks like it won't be a pc os (this is just my guess, I hope I'm wrong). But this also looks like a step toward improving linux gaming, and I surely like that.

I don't get it. Do you need to buy new hardware for this to work? Or can I just use Steam and give my HDMI cable some rest?

You can install SteamOS on your computer. It's free.
What I think is interesting and related to this announcement is that AMD announced a new low-level graphics API (in layman's terms, it means programmers can write faster graphics code, but it'll only run on AMD graphics devices) called Mantle, and NVIDIA announced that it will be working more with Linux open-source. I think they may be competing for the Steambox. If AMD gets it, then the Xbone, PS4, and Steambox will all be using AMD graphics, which would give more of a reason to use Mantle, which would really lock NVIDIA out.
Valve also showed the Steambox controller, and I'm not optimistic about it. It looks weird.
