10 years of HC
It's that time of year again. The leaves turn brown and fall from the trees, the weather gets colder, the days grow shorter (unless you're in the Southern Hemisphere), and Mvass makes an "X years of HC" thread. This time, it's ten years, and I didn't miss my anniversary as I usually do. I've been at HC for exactly a decade, and I've spent about 45% of my life as an active HC member. I registered in 7th grade, now I'm done with college. How time flies.
What of significance happened for me in this past year? In terms of HC posts, I wrote The Hierarchy of Preferences (which was unfortunately quickly driven off-topic), fixed my H4 gaming problems, introduced Newcomb's Problem (which had more of a consensus than I expected), and played through Might and Magic 6, 7, and 8. Among other posts, I argued against animal rights, defended polyamory, defended technological progress, and (perhaps most importantly) outlined a virtue ethical egoist perspective on ethics. Overall, it was a good year for Mvass posts.
Last year I still hadn't tried H6. It turns out that my laptop really doesn't run it that well. The demo worked fine, but when I bought the actual game, it gave me a black screen every time I loaded a battle. Perhaps my laptop is too old.
What else happened in HC since my "9 years of HC" thread? Drakon's incessant Mussolini quotes, the most annoying spamming spree in HC history, and a few good debates in the OSM. In the past month or so, HC has been significantly less active, but these things come and go, maybe people will start posting a lot again soon.
I like HC. My time here has been well-spent. At this rate, I'll be here for another 10 years.

Always nice to read your anniversary posts, mvass. Congrats with your 10 years. I've been here for 4 years now and longer than TheDeath^, despite joining a few months before he left ^^
You may have been approx. 13 when you joined, but you might not have been particularly conscious at age 0-2, meaning you could as well state you've been here for 50% of your life (the time after you were merely a rambling drooling pooing eating machine).
Was this the first forum you joined, btw.? I recently realized the first forum I ever joined was in september 03, one month (more likely less) before you joined here (though I wasn't active). Do you remember what your expectations of the future was before you signed up and how it may have changed?
With a lot of nostalgia going around, I was wondering, could you order each years you've been at HC after much you enjoyed to participate here?
PS: Dungeon doesn't suck

I'm surprised you still bother counting. I sure as hell don't.
And every time you make one of these threads, I'll remind you that you're still a bloody noob in my eyes.

Yes, I've been at GameFAQs nearly as long, though, and I'm still sort-of active there. I joined a lot of message boards in early 2004 as well, IIRC, but I left most of them quickly. More recently (in the past couple of years) I joined Reddit and LessWrong, and am active there.Quote: Do you remember what your expectations of the future was before you signed up and how it may have changed?
I expected to post a lot about H5 and my proposals for it, but instead I found the word games that were then in Tavern, and started participating in them. Then I joined Let's Have War, though I didn't really understand how RPs worked, so I came up with new powers for myself whenever I needed them. I thought they were like pretend playground games: "I have a titanium sword!" "Well, I titanium-sword-blocking armor!" "Well, I have a special sword that cuts through titanium-sword-blocking armor!" "My armor is immune to that too!", etc. As a result, I was banned from LHW, but soon rejoined it with an alternate account (Deimos), which I hid by logging with it on a different computer. After LHW ran its course (sometime in early 2006 or so), I became bored with HC, complaining about how it had declined. And it's actually sort of true. In retrospect, even comparing the 2006 Tavern posts to the current ones, 2006 HC was boring. But then I discovered the OSM, and the rest is history. Quote: With a lot of nostalgia going around, I was wondering, could you order each years you've been at HC after much you enjoyed to participate here?
In decreasing order: 2013, 2012, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2008, 2007, 2004, 2005, 2003 (the little of it I was here), 2006.
Dungeon does suck. Every other town has something outstanding that makes it shine, even Fortress. But Dungeon is consistently mediocre.

I do feel like a noob compared to you. Even though you've been here only slightly over two years compared to me, you're a vet and I'm a newish poster. Nothing compared to these 2006-and-after noobs, though.

As surprising as it can be, yes sir!

I joined in 2008, shortly before i got this marvel of gaming as my bday gift. so yeah, I cared about Heroes of Might and Magic in 2008 ::shrug::
that being said, I actually never cared about H3 at all, since H2 was the object of my most passionate fandom and always prefered H4/H5 to it, as well.

Thank you very much for a bit more insight. I don't think I'd have stuck around heroes community as much as I had, had you never discovered OSM. Also I agree, this place has certainly ruled in 09-13 ..since I joined..
Out of curiosity, do you recall any viewpoints of yours which have changed or weren't formed back when you joined? Can you remember anyone's viewpoints you changed, or at least think you did?

Played Heroes 3 around 99-00, maybe 01 (then I lost the game), played it again in February/Marts 09 and joined here in August 09. Second time around, the game was even greater in my humble opinion.

Happy anniversary,mvass!
I got 3 years already since my registration.
This reminds me to make my own thread when I have the mood.
And when I get the time,I could debate with you in some OSM topics.
