With respect to the tier 1 unit that is most pivotal for it's respective faction, the skels will have to take the cake, (with a great alternative upgrade); stalkers with a close second due to the leverage a lock gains against archers/casters (not to mention players). After that, my money is on grems > sprites/shieldguards/imps.

i vote for imp because they have an amazing ability can counter mage heroes (my biggest problem)

Stalkers win hands down, but not if you take weekly growth into account. Sprites could hit stalkers with 2 wasp swarms before they get hit, but don't think they'd survive against Assassains.
Peasants are the worst in battle, but then again they generate free money for haven players.
