Quote: The gradual slowdown overtime is a rusult of a bad gamecode, which needs to be optimized. Total Annihilation kingdoms had exactly the same slowdown problems even on top PCs. When the patch came out, it optimized the code which made the game faster.
As far as I am concerned they released a beta version, I will not play it until the patch.
Uh... Internet Explorer runs slowly after being on too long. Granted, it's got to deal with all kinds of possibilities (poorly designed web pages with unexpected html code and such), but that's not much different. Not to defend 3do on a beta release, but EVERYBODY is writing bad code these days, and as I mentioned before, on my crappy little AMD 400, I don't notice any slowdown over time. In fact, I left the game on all day yesterday while I was out doing stuff (over 8 hours) and played for about 8 hours straight with no problems. It has crashed only once, and that was on friday night after about 6 hours of play.
It probably has plenty of bad code in it, but going slower could be a result of many things other than the game (OS, other software running in the background, video card, quality of MB or RAM, etc). If it happens on every machine, that's one thing. But it doesn't. So I think at worst it's bad code that wasn't very noticable before release, simply because it didn't slow down very many computers.

For some reason, it get's faster the longer I play it. I started this thread, so you can read the problems I have when I first start the game up at the top.
After a few hours, there's just a bit of slowdown while a new building is being constructed, along with a little lag during combat.

I am 1.3 Ghz Athlon, Geforce 2 64MB, 256 DDR Ram.
Had some speed problems - the animations are not very smooth all the time.
So I ran it under Win98. It behaves better.
Another big problems:
1. Random freezeng - only Reset helps. Usually after battles that were very quick. But somethimes on any random place just freezes. But it is not so bad coz it is around half an hour between the each freeze.
2. The music is like a gramophone-reapeats some part over and over until it just continues and then starting to repeat different part over and over???????
No matter - I am a fan - I ve just finished the third campaign!

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!!!
They ARE a joke!!!
Beacause they are'nt right
I mean, I have: Pentium 200 MhZ MMX, 128 RAM, 2 MB Graphic Card, 20 GB HDD and x50 CR-rom, and, without Adventure Map animation it is COMEPLETELY PLAYABLE!!!
Sure it's not as fast as at my cousin's but it's enough to enjoy this game at home

I hear a lot of XP people complaining... and one person said it runs better under 98.. in windows XP, if you right click on a program and go to properties, there is an option to "run in 98 mode" or "run in 95 mode"... changing that would be a hell of a lot easier than installing 98...

...don't care much for technical stuff or terminology, so I don't know the actual stats. All I know is that I'm disappointed that my semi-decent comp can't handle the game...either that or it is already too scrweed up to run anything correctly...however, on my better comp, already around a year now works fine with this game...however, when you start amassing gigantic armies, then it starts to get jagged and laggy or whatever...doesn't seem to be much of a problem though...most of the major problems people have been complaining about, I don't think I've experience yet...except for the occassion game exiting...or crashing as I think it's called or something...but it doesn't break, just disappears.

Just for the record, we tried to play on my brother's P 150 Mhz, not even MMX, 32MB RAM, 2 MB VRAM It is quite playable if you don't mind a 15 minute turn...
On an AMD500, 128 RAM, 32MB Geforce 256, Win98 it is much better - but there is this gradual slowdown, slow transfer from screen to screen etc. So definitely it is a beta.
Off topic - MM9 is an example of how to ruin a good formula for a game. I'd much better go through MM8 instead just because they have normal character paper dolls.

I can understand that people dont have enough money or something to get a good pc, but you cant ask 3do for much better graphics and animation and iso-3D world and somehow expect them to keep the minimum reqs the same as for H3...
Also, just because you have a somewhat slower pc, and h4 doesnt run that well on it, doesnt mean that you should call Heroes 4 it a "beta" in anger, just because your system isnt optimized for it... thats seems childish if you dont mind me saying.
Once again, I can understand not being able to afford a fast pc, but you must understand that if you have a slightly slower pc, that everything is not going to run perfectly...
And we know that people that have some of the faster pc's have said that everything runs smoothly... so we know that everything works in Heroes 4. Therefore, calling it a beta has no basis... one could say that maybe they set the minimum reqs too low, and that might make since... but to call it a "beta"... seems a bit absurd, especially considering there is nothing missing and everything works.

Do we know?
Quote: And we know that people that have some of the faster pc's have said that everything runs smoothly... so we know that everything works in Heroes 4.
I personally don't have good enough computer to run the game and I won't be around playing it but I saw the game in my friend's house...
I can say he has all the hardware that should be needed to run game like Heroes 4. And it doesn't run smoothly...
I and neither does my friend know what happens sometimes but game slowdowns sometimes strangely in middle of combat and also longer you play slower the game gets.
The game is turnbased strategy game and shouldn't have (in my opinion) graphics and animations (which aren't that great anyway) that take so much power that it starts slowing down machines that everything else is running smoothly.
There are definately some issues with how the gamecode is written and how the program handles certain situations. If the computer lacks memory it's wiser not to buy it until patch is out.
So everything DOESN'T work in Heroes 4 even if it does run smoothly in your computer. However I don't want to mock the game but just maybe remind that some of the players maybe have problems and not with the only minimum requirements being said to be too low in the box but because the game works like beta sometimes.
Still...The game is more HEROES than ever.
I would love to have more time and money to buy new computer and the game and play. But not now...maybe later.
Enjoy the game, enjoy the life.

Haha! My computer is even worse than Slava's - Cyrix 200 Mhz (I don't know why the system counts it as 166 though), 94 MB RAM (yes, 94 - 2 are taken as a video card), 15 GB Hard Disk... And not only the game tuns but the turns don't take 15 minutes (although I have tried only the tutorial and 2 turns in a scenario)... It's completely bearable. The only problem is with the changing of the screens - when my hero moves in a definite direction, it takes some time to show the new surroundings. But that's not a problem at all. Yes, the first time I noticed that it becomes slower as the time passes and finally I ended up looking at the desktop... But the next time I even had the feeling that the game becomes faster... Anyway, it can be played on my machine and that is the most important thing.

Yeah! The screen changing is the main problem, but it's not a problem .. But, I found out that (at least in battle) you can lower the speed, and you then see the animation, I'll soon check whether it works on A map or not.
BTW, the thing that runs as it should is the AI turns
PS: I still didn't have the chance to play a long game (on my PC), so nothing yet to say about slowdowns.

With me, Heroes 4 gets faster...
like for instance, the first few times you enter your castle, it actually has a loading bar for a couple seconds, but as the game goes on, your castle eventually loads instantaneously...

I think its just the way your computer is configured because alot of people with almost the same system give or take a few mb's of ram or video card or somethin... and they have completely different results! i've also found that pentiums seem to be giving people more problems then amd.
Me personally I have an amd athlon 550, 386 mb ram and ati radeon 64mb. and its runs perfect! except for the memory leak bug, but with my ram its takes more then 12 hours to kick in and actually crash it.

Camelnor,
I do not call H4 a "beta" in anger. I can play the game allright and there are no huge problems except an occasional crash out. However, it might just be that a game with a memory leak problem (which actually should have been noticed asap if any testing was made) can be rightfully called a beta from my point of view.
In my opinion, the graphics don't look much better to me in H4 than H3 (look at the gryphons in battle) - some actually look worse than H3 (pop-up and stat screens). The same kind of difference as with mm9 and mm8, I wonder what made 3DO save on art there (no, I don't)
No offense meant at all with my previous post, I was just as much looking towards this game and really like some of the implementation, esp. the hero development and hero involvement parts.

I have a PII~376Mhz with 294Mo RAM, TnT2 32mo video card.
The game was really slow but after I disabled the map animations it got a lot better.
for the long-game slow problem, I didn't notice...

This will happen in most games with GOOD memory management. They're using everything they can to make sure you read from disk as little as possible. As you play, more MP3 songs are loaded (they stay in memory after being loaded once), more graphics, more sound effects, etc. So the longer you play, the more stuff is being crammed into memory. I'd imagine the MP3 music by itself is 100+ MB, so it makes perfect sense that it's using up all your memory.
I don't know about why your virtual memory is used up, mine never has that problem, but we do know it has some issues on windows 2000 and xp.
