Active-Time Battle. I forgot to say the word 'bar', but basically in H5, when you start a game, all your trops and the heroes are randomly positioned in the initiative bar. The value I think it's like 0.25 and it can affect the outcome of a battle a lot.
If only had been 0.1....
Sarcyan said: I like randomness, as I relate it to chess, where you can have different openings and your opponent has to figure out what opening you chose, and it gives diversity to a given hero.
I also like randomness, but on a reasonable amount.
Sarcyan said: Anyway... I've definitely fallen in love with this series for dear life.
A life you should enjoy then
I see... Thanks for the explanation. I like the initiative bar a lot, it's a novelty that adds depth compared to Heroes 3, which is the game I am used to.
I still don't understand it fully 'cos I got confused with Morale turns and true initiative turns, but still... I think it is a step in the right direction.
On another note, torn as I am between Heroes 3 and Heroes 5 -favouring 5 because of the 3D and the fact that it's based on Heroes 3, which is precious-, I decided to add some tips for those who want to run Heroes of Might and Magic 5 <3 <3 at max settings without going overboard or putting their PC down to its knees.
My CPU is an Intel i5 and I throttle it down to 1.1 or 1.2 GHz -it maxes out at 3GHz, but I like it that way 'cos I play on a laptop most of the time-.
I can't stand the sound of the fan when it begins to spin and I don't want the laptop to be running at 70º C or more when there is no need for that.
I set the windowed mode resolution to 1280x720 and the internal resolution to 2560x1440. This means that I effectively get SSAA (Super Sampling AA) for free.
My rather crappy Intel HD 3000 graphics is not that bad of a GPU, it handles AF just fine, -AA is a different matter though- but shadows are its Achilles Heel.
I set everything to max settings (Very High) on the game Options.
So in order to keep the fan from spinning and my laptop to run at 60ºC or more I just disable these settings in the user_a2.cfg file (Dynamic Lights and Shadows -you aren't going to miss them at all-, water reflections... it depends on you, dunno)
So to run the game at super high resolutions in Windowed mode, and max settings but freeing up resources disabling useless but power hungry features.. These are the steps you can take:
- Go to My Documents\My Games\Heroes of Might and Magic V - Tribes of the East\Profiles\<Your User Name>\user_a2.cfg
- Open the file with Notepad
Find these lines:
Find the line setvar gfx_dynamic_lights = 1
Change it to setvar gfx_dynamic_lights = 0
/No dynamic lights. Power hungry feature that goes unnoticed when either turned off or turned on/
Find the line setvar gfx_noshadows = 0
Change it to setvar gfx_noshadows = 1
/No shadows. Shadows are usually power hungry/
Vsync (ESSENTIAL!)
Find the line setvar gfx_vsync = 0
Change it to setvar gfx_vsync = 1
Vsync is fundamental to run the game as smoothly as possible and not having your GPU running the game at 100fps and cause it to wear and tear, especially for those playing on a laptop who, like me, don't want it to overheat or have to deal with the fan running all the time.
Internal resolution. You can go absolutely CRAZY with this nowadays. Check your GPU documentation in order to know the max resolution your GPU accepts.
Find this line (mine is set at 2560x1440, /the max resolution my GPU accepts is 2560x1600/ change the values accordingly)
setvar gfx_resolution = 2560x1440
Window size resolution. Windowed mode is something most people dig and it's flawless in Windows 7-8 in order to merge applications and use them seamlessly. It works especially well in the Heroes 5 expansion, Tribes of the East 'cos you can choose the internal resolution and the window size separately, as pointed out already.
setvar gfx_window_size = 1280x720
Note that the internal resolution in this case (the aforementioned 2560 x 1440) is mathematically the direct multiple of 1280x720.
I play on a 1366x768 laptop screen so 1280x720 as the window size is perfect for that, it looks like an actual window and you can seamlessly switch between applications.

I like the variety of skills, heroes, creature abilities, etc. There's enough options to make it engaging, but not so many that it's not fun. I really like also how combat is relatively straight forward, but for those who like to do the nuts and bolts number crunching, the game is incredibly deep. Lastly, I like that the game looks nice, but wasn't built to be just eye candy. Seems like SO MANY GAMES get some of these elements wrong. HOMM3 will always be on any computer I own, and will be used fairly regularly.
Fully agreed. I'd say basically the same, just adding Heroes of Might and Magic 5 -Heroes 2... well... why not? Unique, lovely art style- to the equation. I love Heroes of Might and Magic 5 'cos of the 3D graphics and because it's the logical evolution of Heroes 3, the most solid game of the franchise.
Talking of which, Heroes of Might and Magic 5 since Heroes of Might and Magic V - Tribes of the East is a stand-alone expansion and doesn't need the previous titles...
I learnt how to play the campaigns of the original Heroes 5 game and Heroes 5 Hammer of Fate, on the incredible, super precious Heroes of Might and Magic 5 Tribes of the East.
In order to play the original campaigns of Heroes of Might and Magic V and Heroes of Might and Magic V Hammer of Fate on Heroes of Might and Magic V Tribes of the East (which also has its own campaign, of course), I uploaded the necessary files to my Onedrive account.
I compressed the 4 files -cutscenes, dialogues, text and the campaings themselves- in a single ZIP file, so you don't have to download several files from different links.
Here it is:
http://1drv.ms/1nBTTQK
For those who have the great, awesome Heroes of Might and Magic V Tribes of the East just remember that the only thing you have to do is copying the files to your Usermods folder. They will be available to play as regular campaigns.
Finally, the files are from the English version. I can download the French, Russian, Spanish, Polish, German, etc versions of the games from my GoG account, but I don't know how to extract the files, so... that's it. :smile2:
I insist; You have to place the files in the UserMODs/ folder of your Heroes of Might and Magic V Tribes of the East directory. Easy as pie. Hope it helps
It works flawlessly for me.

Sarcyan, how interested are u in programming languages?
And map designing?
Since it looks that Salamandre is gone for good (we miss u Sal), we need another intelligent, creative, dedicated and maybe obsessive person to take care of "ERM Help and Discussion" and design beautifull maps.
And I was thinking that u have so much better manners...

didn't take it and probably Sal had a point.
I admire his work so much that I tend to forget he doesn't have a reason to like me or to want to share what he knows with me.
After I chill out I believe he probably felt my internet behaviour towards him similar to those guys that stalk movie stars.
I only hope I can change this before I have a chance to cross roads with George Martin...

Me, too. My only beef with the generator is that it creates far too many scroll artifacts. (Really, are "Magic Arrow" scrolls even necessary? I mean, think about it.)

For me the worst part are the spells Summon Boat and Shuttle Boat.
I once got this mage guild on my first town (on a Water=None map)
level 1 - summon boat, protection from fire, magic arrow, view air, dispel
level 2 - fortune, visions, ice bolt, shuttle boat
Can u believe it?

Heh! I get tons of "Summon Boat" and "Scuttle Boat" scrolls every time I auto-generate a Water=None map.

Fully agreed with the obsessive part. There is no grey for me, it's all either black or white. Being like that has its perks though...
As for Salamandre, what do I know? I kinda understand him 'cos life has its cycles. Still there is no need to leave the forum forever, people are usually understanding if you just say you can't keep up for whatever reason. There are things that might blur the line and you have to break with those expectations. That's what I've seen in life.
I've also created a few thing sometimes on my own and it can be tiresome and time consuming, it's all about priorities. Still, for people like Salamandre and others, there is no need to leave the forum, just writing or sharing their thought when they can, no one is going to force them to create anything.
Anyways, I would love to say yes, but my rational side asks me not to say that. It's not about conformity but being honest with myself, and further... being true to my personal life.
Even if I truly wanted to, I know very little about the game despite being crazy in love with the series. I am in the third scenario of the Spoils of War campaign in Heroes 3, and I also play Heroes 5, I am in the "The trap" scenario of the Haven campaign. So I've actually played like just 3 factions... just imagine... Then, I might be moving relatively soon, and so on and so forth.
This is why it might not be a good idea to try to learn that language and create interesting things, because I expect not to be up to the task, and people might rip me to shreds verbally (well, writing here), and rightfully so.
Hopefully the future will be better and we will see more and more mods and stuff for this masterpiece called Heroes 3. Some of the people who made amazing contributions moved on and that's normal, they flapped their arms like birds and flew, something/someone anew will appear along the way...
I kinda miss the guy who made mods for Heroes 4, I think his nick is BAD, iirc, though --even if I never had a single word with him. For some reason... probably because t'was one of the first Heroes games I tried to find info about, in regards to modding. And I sort of treasure every single mod for Heroes 4 --but I played the game so little that I have to form a more solid opinion on it.
People learn to adapt and maybe one day when I feel self-sufficient for something like that I might give it a try. But replying yes to your petition would lead you and me to frustration, because maybe I begin to give something a try and then...you don't hear back.
My live is... girls know, with all that it implies, good and bad, moving... etc.
Still, you are welcome to ask anything, as I really like your heartfelt passion about Heroes of Might and Magic and similar games -which I now have, btw, too, thanks to you. So..., what can I say, THANKS Francisco!!!
And it dawns of me... when I tried those games I was suddenly, like, wow... some of these seem to be real good. Still Heroes is first and I am into it.

I was kidding when I said you should apply to Salamandre's work. That guy really was able to give heart and soul to a game. Ok, it's an amazing game but still, is just a game.
But I can see your dedication and I'm not the only one. I don't have any idea what will be your way in the game (Tournament? Modder?) but I feel the force is strong on you.

Now that I know better, have the entire GoG collection, plus all the games in the Age of Wonder series and also the two games of Eador series... I also have Disciple series, King's Bounty series, Disciples, Etherlords, and so on...
Had I to recommend you a game or games I'd wholeheartedly suggest Age of Wonders (Age of Wonders is great, from 1 to the brand new Age of Wonders 3) and Eador: Genesis (or its sequel, basically the same game but in 3D).
I explained it here in full detail:
http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=40089&pagenumber=6
Elemental: Fallen Enchantress is also pretty good.
A Heroes of Might and Magic fan can't go wrong with those, and they expand on some things, by making them better.

In no particular order:
- very fun exploration, tons of interesting map locations with text descriptions, wide variety of treasure
- very fun tactical combat
- high replayability in single player, good use of randomness
- extremely high production values. One of best soundtracks ever and among best looking 2D games ever. This is especially impressive considering how much stuff there is. 2D games at its peak.
- competent AI. While it has numerous flaws, it's very aggressive and will take any poorly guarded city or mine. It's especially fond of capturing your cities on day 7.
- in Heroes 1-4, factions/cities made no pretense of being realistic, which was quite liberating. Whole armies composed of unicorns, druids, griffins, hydras, pixies, wolves, trolls. How do they get along ? WHO CARES ? It's fun!
