well, both the HotA crew, VCMI crew, WoG crew, and myself(as well as others) have been working on improving graphics for the game. i recently replaced the resource defs, with much less cartoonish ones. it isn't that much of a stretch, really, for a wholly fan-made, improved graphics version of HoMM3. there are enough people using 3d programs now, that they could create what people want. hell, i'm only using photoshop, and i'm achieving great results.

Why would it be successful?
I mean, it's a big if, since it would gain sharper looks and lose all fan-made content at that point.

Doesn't make a lt of sense to me.

Maybe because there is a crapload of H3 fans out there?

I imagine if an H3 HD remake is made, and it is only ROE to begin with, AND it is successful, remaking AB, SoD and maybe even WoG would not be too strenuous.
If they took the effort to remake RoE, adding all the AB and SoD content probably wouldn't be that much additional work. Don't think we'd ever see anything official about WoG, though.

Most likely not. But they could incorporate some of the scripting capability. And if nothing else, a modern game is likely more easily moddable,  so some of the limitations of Wog would no longer be a problem.

What makes you think they would rewrite the game code? That would be a reWRITING of the game, not a HD-REMAKE.

You see, I think that HoMM 3 is doing fine without Ubisoft starting something. If you consider what has been done with the game within the last 15 years, starting with 3do/nwc themselves with their two add-ons and further development, everything except a FULL remake - that is, the complete content and some way to transfer an old user-made map into the new format, would be something like a disappointment.
There is a reason why HoMM 3 is held in such a high regard, but there os also a reason why WoG has been made and called HoMM 3.5: while the game was really great, it also left a lot to be desired.

So while there obviously is potential here, a MERE HD-remake won't cut it.

That's different with HoMM 2, though, which is the ideal vehicle for a test run. First of all - the game works as it is. Second, the content is LIMITED and easily to be worked into one game. Third, the game itself (leaving out the new HD graphics) is fairly simple in terms of coding .- which also means that you could easily CHANGE things, and with change I mean incorporating something of HoMM 3: a slightly more satisfactory selection of secondary skills with better workings - not a problem - and a couple of changes in tactical mode: wait command, range of fliers, to name 2.
There would also be potential to ADD CONTENT: why NOT adding THE BEASTMASTER and the DEMONIAC (and for all it's worth, the PLANESWALKER)?
I mean, obviously, there was a compelling reason to buy that product: THE ORIGINAL game experience in it's orginal cartoony style in modern HD with optimzed game mechanics and added content.
I would pay serious money for that, and be it only because I'm quite sure that such a HoMM 2 would be an ACTUAL rival for all HoMM games out there, and not just a trip down memory lane without any really new gaming experience.

In short: With HoMM 3 everyone will see, what they will NOT get, when they buy it. With HoMM 2 everyone will see a new HoMM game.

Other than art style, what's the difference between a HoMM 3 remake and a HoMM 2 remake with all that added content?

HoMM 2 remake can be made a complete one without much of an effort, because it's more or less a DEAD - or closed - game, while HoMM 3 is - has become - a monster of a game, that's still living.

Well in terms of graphics I stand firmly in favour of H3 over H2, the art and animations are just more developed and realistic.

That's a discussion I wouldn't want to have. "Realistic" - for me - isn't always better, especially not if the game as such isn't offering a realistic model: stack-based combat is definitely NOT realistic, the hero support in damage modifying isn't realistic either, spells and magic is straight out of the realms of fairy tales, and so "realistic" is certainly something that's - again, for me - not only way down the list, it's not ON the list in the first place; the cartoony HoMM 1 & 2 style fits the game quite fine, meaning, there is nothing wrong with it.

First of all, stick this thread.

Second, Heroes II is older than III but it lacks many features Heroes III has, especially towns. Heroes II lacks Inferno and Fortress. Plus, it has 1 class per faction.

I would recommend 3 classes-per-faction: Offense, Defense and Support class. Tower has all three of them magic-based, Stronghold has all three of them might based while all others are mixed, i.e. Castle has Offense and Deffense might based but Support magic based.

Edit:
On the other hand. Heroes II has some things better than Heroes III:
-Some troops don't upgrade. Others upgrade thrice.

How about a mix of those two games(in terms of creatures&factions)?

Well, there is Succession Wars mod which is a H2 remake. It is fan made but is remake of an older game using a newer engine which supports higher resolutions and has more towns/creatures/map objects. Everything you would like a H2 remake to have. So what's the point in repeating it?

I think I disagree. Succession Wars Mod is making HoMM 2 too much of an HoMM 3 game.
It should retain HoMM 2 structure of 5 slots, 6 creatures and only 1000 gold per town.
The Mod, however, supports my point that HoMM 3 (because the Mod is essentially a HoMM THREE enhancement, not a HoMM 2 remake) is currently offerning such a wealth of possible gaming experiences, that I would hate losing anything of that.

My viewpoint is that the HD remake should be of the most popular game, which is clearly H3. A lot of people still play H3, and it looks downright ugly on a modern high resolution monitor. I would be far more likely to buy H3 HD remake than H2 HD remake - because H3 is the superior game.

The Succession Wars Mod may have also a H2-oriented minimod in future, concerning full range shooters and flyers with the renewed gameplay experience. Also, we have already implemented some tricks which restore unique H2 features, like castles changing their view depending on the terrain they stand on. Also, the castle income is also easily changeable if needed. For now it will be 500/1000/1500/3000.

As for 5 slots and such - it's barely possible with the H3 engine. And not that demanded by the community, if we speak about fan projects. The only thing that is the most popular in H2 and can really objectively compete with H3 - is still the warm pixel graphics (which don't make much sense for HD version, and pixel art technique is really time consuming, believe me).

Anyways, even if Ubisoft put a variant about H3 HD remake in their polls, it does not mean they would ever start making it.

I would agree to buy a high-tech game fully consisting of H3 concepts instead though.

Damn, why that Mount&Blade mod died.

As a side note and as advertising, I would like to show you the Might and Magic 8,5: Echo of Destruction project, which will allow players to meet some nicely crafted H3 concepts in high-res.

I have been honored to participate in the development.

That's the starting point and something no one would argue against. However, what would be satisfactory here, that's the question, and as much as I've been playing and liking HoMM 3, a HD remake of RoE only, as in, the original game without any changes, would NOT see me buying it.

Quote:

I cannot agree with the game looking ugly. Master of Magic looks ugly, but HoMM 3?

Quote:

That is debatable. HoMM 3 is the bigger game, and it certainly offers a lot over HoMM 2 - but in some ways HoMM 2 is working better as a game. HoMM 3 wouldn't have gotten its popularity without HoMM 2 being a hit prior to that; a lot of people at the time were already waiting for the game.

Anyway. For me it's not actually the question, WHICH GAME to do, but HOW to do it, and there I think that you can make a lot wrong with HoMM 3. Not so with HoMM 2.
