I have homm2 Gold edition
Hello fellow HC, I have heroes of might and magic 2 Gold edition and I wanted to play it on my windows 8.0, but when I tried there was a DDRR error and would not play, even with all the compatibility changes that I made. I don't want to use the homm3 Mod version of heroes 2. I want to play using the cd. Thanks in advance if anyone can help with this problem and not using Virtual box (unless its free ) Thanks again

Try using DosBox. Good Old Games' version of H2 comes with it.

HoMM II Gold (1998) cannot be played under dosbox because HoMM II Gold is a native Windows game (without DOS port).
GoG always lies about DOS version of HoMM II Gold because it doesn't exist. The latest HoMM II release with DOS game versions is HoMM II Compendium released 1997.
I am unable to test HoMM II Gold on Windows 8 but HoMM II Gold is perfectly working in Windows 7 x86 (32-bit).
Here are some screenshots of TRUE HoMM II Gold (1998) CD release.

or, like i keep saying, you can run the game(ANY game, ffs), or your computer itself, using ONE processor...

Using SINGLE processor CORE. Disabling hyper-threading is required also. Or setting affinity to Core 0 of your Multi-Core CPU.

Well, Windows 8 actually has more known compatibility problems than Windows 7 has. Mostly due to the lack of proper DDraw API support (it's only emulated in Win8). That's why I use a dual boot setup with Win7+Win8. Using a vitural machine is possible, but it's kinda complicated and isn't really made for gaming. Not even an old game like Tiberian Sun runs perfectly using a vitural machine. Dual booting is the best solution and quite easy to setup, if needed.
I might try getting HMM2 Gold to run in Windows 8 for the fun of it, though.

EDIT: I wish I did have the original Heroes 2 (I love the sorcerer music sooo much )
And Humanoid: Will that run on Win 8?
And Hippox89: I don't know how to set up duel booting and if that will affect any other program that I have on it, and does that require having the Win 8 set-up cd? And that was the exact issue was a DDraw issue. Thanks again everyone for the help. Heroes 1 & 2 were great old games

Thanks, Murphy

Well, the best way to set up a dual-boot with w7+w8 is by first installing Windows 7, then you make a partition for the Windows 8 installation, and then you install Windows 8 on the separate partition. This way, the first OS will remain intact and independent.
However, if you already have Windows 8 installed, you can still make a partition and then install Windows 7 on it. The boot manager will be the old one (to my knowledge) from Windows 7, tho. It doesn't really matter much, tho. It works fine both ways. Anyhow, you'll only need a Windows 7 disk if Windows 8 is already installed.
You can, of course, screw up your current OS if you do something wrong, but it's relatively safe. Also, what I said is only relevant for w7+w8 or w8+w7. Dual-booting with Windows XP + a newer OS is more prone to error during the setup.
