How Do I Edit Heroes?
Hi guys, I tried researching but to no avail do I find the answers I'm looking for.
What I want to do is change say.. the Nur portrait to Maahir. And change her description to Maahir's as well. Well, I just want Maahir to be in my taverns because apparently, he was shafted out and I like his portrait. I want this to be in all my scenarios.
When I play Academy, I want no Nur to appear in the tavern, instead, it's Maahir taking her place.
When selecting starting heroes in scenarios, I want to be able to choose Maahir instead of Nur.
How do I do this? I know you need to edit the .pak file but where do I find it and what is its name? How do I edit it?
Oh, and I also want to change Lucretia's picture to Giovanni but Vampire Princess in Giovanni doesn't fit. I only want to change the name of the skill. Say, Vampire King. Is there a way for me to change the name too?

you should post such questions in the modder workshop.
if you can open the .pak, the files you need are in :
/MapObjects/*NameOfFaction*/*NameOfHero*.AdvMapHeroShared.xdb
from there it's a matter of following and swapping links.
texts are in text.pak. but sometimes modified texts won't appear in game at all, despite links being all good. I don't know why.
heroes have different names than in game, so you'll have to look at the files carefully to know who they really are.
don't modify the .pak btw. you need to make copies of the files and put the mods in the UserMods repertory

My advice - you don't have to repack files into .h5u mods each time you mod something. When you are in progress you can pust files in data folder in the same directories that they have in original data.pak. The game (and Editor) will read it but your data.pak won't be changed and you won't waste time packing files

^^ thank you for that advise.. hmm.. I'm not getting the results I want. I did group the extracted ones in a folder but in the same folder with data.pak. It's to keep things clean. Do I really need to put all the unpacked files in the same folder as data.pak?

I recommend extracting ALL files to HoMM5/data/extract folder, making them NOT FOR READING ONLY, copying original files and putting modded ones in the HoMM5/data folder in their original directories. Then it should want but, yes, it's necessary to put that files in the data folder.

thank you. So, as you said, if I group the files in one folder say ".../bina2/data/data folder", the game will still read it correct? I don't need to change any links?

bina2? Why the hell?
And yes, you don't need to change any links but you'll have to put the files in correct directories. BUT they must be put in their directories exactly in HoMM5/data(a1)/ folder and files in HoMM/data(a1)/data won't be read by the game.

sigh.. did it but still not working.
What am I doing wrong?
Here's what I did:
So, I tried the simplest form of modding, changing a peasant's gold cost to 5 instead of 15.
I used file named data.pak, the one I extracted from bina2 (if that's the cause).
so, as the modding tutorial said, I made a GameMechanics folder containing creature folder containing creatures folder containing Haven folder containing Peasant.xdb. The difference is that I changed the gold cost of the peasant from 15 to 5. So, what I placed in the data(a1) folder is the GameMechanics folder containing all those.
Tried it in the game and still not working. Please help!!
