What is your opinion of WikiLeaks?
The reason I ask is, I visited the site for the first time an hour ago. It seems to be a fount of information that would benefit the masses to read/hear/watch, and absorb. Definitely not "average dumb consumer with eyes closed" type stuff, at all.
The website claims that it is very serious about verifying any information it has for any to see and/or assimilate.
The information that I've seen is particularly damning to many corporations and governments.
Of course, there is the very real possibility of that site being fed disinformation by various types of people for various reasons. The entire site could be disinformation, as far as I know.
What does everyone here think about it? Do you think it is valid information? What purpose does this information serve? What purpose CAN the site and it's information serve?
Most of all, assuming the information on that site is indeed correct, what could anyone do about it? What WOULD anyone do about it?
Understand, I'm not trying to rally anyone here, I just want to know what everyone at HC thinks.

While I am not that familiar with the site it self through personal experience, it seems to serve a very noble cause. However, I do not trust Assange very much. He acted very shady during the rape charges and seeing a photo of a sign saying "When USA barks, Sweden wags it tail" pissed me of. It is not like my government have not done shady things before and I never believed him to be guilty but I would have liked a little more faith in our justice system in such a international and highlighted case. The trial should have been easy to see through and a corrupt one would have caused public outrage and political death.
But in the end you can't blame the dude. He probably was not guilty in the first place and after seeing what was done to Manning and Snowden, Assanges actions at the time can only be seen as wise and predicting.
Hopefully one day, America and partially their friends, can hail the whistleblowers of today as heroes in the battle against the shadows.

Search for truth is always noble. Unfortunatelly, truth is not a good business for the onbes who rule this world. I'm all for WIkileaks and similiar initiatives as opposed to government and corporations.

I think it's another situation in which the question is "does the end justify the means" Information theft is information theft, who's going to decide when it's good and when it's bad? Of course, in the case of Wikileaks one can bring the argument that the documents regarding the goverment is information that the public has a right to know anyway. But almost all societies give their governments a constitutional right to preserve some info as state secrets, so that's the core: If anything is going to be debated, it should be debated on a priori basis of that: What are the limits to national security? Should there even be such a thing? (of course, de facto, there will be).

I believe that those that take part in distributing classified information should be named heroes of the plebs, before being shot by a firing squad of course. (in America it wouldn't be cruel or unusual, just justice)
