That is because they re-used the old Compendium Artwork.
That doesn't change the fact that the particular picture is a gathering of Compedium Art, made by a fan to plead for the addition of Academy to Heroes VI. It even says so on the picture.

I think this picture is "spot-on" thanks to the fact, that Academy was considered as an option for one of HVI factions, and as such it's lineup was already more or less done, The only difference I see is the Gargoyle, which got a new look

I have to agree. This one is like a pretty statue, far better than a flying tombstone but still.

Personally, I like the Compendium and DoC Gargoyle artworks better than what appears to be the new artwork.
The "old" gargoyles look like gargoyles. Or at least in the Fantasy-sense of Chimeric Humanoid creatures resembling stone demons.
The new Gargoyles look more like "Harpy-golems".
They are still better than the HV tombstones, but then again, it's hard to be worse.

Those new gargoyles are obviously based upon the Sphinx too.
That's why it is female.
You know that most horrid and most powerful monsters from mythology and folklore are females right?
Banshee's would make a bloody mess of your precious male minotaurs and orcs.
Edit, I really hope the town won't have golems, they are better of as neutral units, I really find golems boring. Bring in some sand-based creatures!

That doesn't make any sense from the lore perspective. Golems are created by Wizards from Academy, and they are already in the game in Academy's lineup so it is pointless to hope for something else.
Academy's lineup is Cabri, "Disciple", Djinn, Gargoyle, Golem, Rakshasa, Magic Bird and Colossus.

Not really if you look at their other games like Duel of Champions and Clash of Heroes. Especially in Duel of Champions there are a lot of Titans and all of them have humanoid forms.
I find it quite funny that we already know Ashan universe, a lot of creatures from each faction and somehow I see a ton of people disappointed that those units from faction are not the units that they have expected from some xyz mythology.

doesn't look like a gargoyle, I suppose the H2/3/4 look wasn't fancy enough

Yes and Ashan = bleh!
But anyway keeping all the freaking models the same because they are from ashan is a very cheap way of re-using sprites for 50 games.
Creatures should change in looks to keep things fresh. HOMM always did that, why so suddenly stuck on the same old boring materials?

Are we? I mean the mages, gargoyles, golems, djinns and titans look nothing like their H5 counterparts. And the rakshasas have gotten truly awesome.
