Quote: "We listened and learned", replies Erwan Le Breton (Creative Director) upon my question if you have to be always on [...] He continues: "No in principle not, you only have to bind the game to your Uplay Account and after that you'll be able to play completely offline"
I don't trust him, though. That "in principle" sounds to me like they're going to put something horrible like the conflux in the game again, unable to have a full game if you disconnect.
But I also haven't played Heroes 6 so far, because I refuse to install Uplay, maybe they'll release it on gog.com now that a successor is coming, I really would like to try it out (besides the short demo, years ago).
Until then, back to HOMM 3.
[edit] sorry I just saw that was already mentioned in the discussion thread

Even in H6 you did not require an online connection to play, you could play offline. Problem was that the game punished offline players with less features, which was simply outrageous.

Well the German phrasing sounds stronger than the English translation. "Vollständig offline spielen" seems to indicate that the game will be fully payable offline.
(I am not a native German speaker so I may not be entirely correct, but I studied it at school for five years)

Emphasis on Elvin's reply is mine.
Exactly that, and as a mainly offline single player, I feel offended by that.
Elvin, do you have information on whether MMH7 will have the same outrageous punishment for offline player, or finally Ubi came to sanity by allowing us full game when we are offline?

I believe they are saner this time around but that revelation is not mine to make. After all I did not know everything the last time so I am in no position to make any claims now.

The ball is on Ubisoft court, but I don't expect an answer until Early Access starts. I hope they don't screw offline mode again...

we live in the age of "online" and the always online niche makes them think they can ward off piracy. so i wouldnt be surprised to find out that some things can only be obtained online. this game is so iconic even at the way you play it that everybody misses the whole not online thing back then. lets see if they get that.

Ubisoft has made a general statement before saying that they don't think DRM is a solution to piracy, however, they expanded this by saying that they instead wanted to expand the benefits by being connected to Uplay, which pirates don't have access to. I'm personally translating this to, 'we know that DRM has a bad reputation, and we want to disassociate ourselves with the term. Instead we'll market Uplay as a service 'made sorely for the benefit of our costumers'. Call me negative, or just plain realistic, but I think this is contradicting and basically PR talk with the goal to try and sell DRM in a new wrapping as 'online benefits'.

Exactly that.
They will never let go of DRM they can call it all they want. We will end up with a heavily castrated game if we choose not to connect with Uplay, besides the fact that the server are only going to work if they feel like it. They simply don't get it and they never will.
