H5 had plenty of good ideas, but H3 worked right out of the box on most computers of the era.

Maybe not better, but easier to navigate.

This is wrong on so many levels. It is quite the opposite, H6 was the most major step back in the franchise, lacking around 80% of gameplay features. Even H5, having similar game mechanics than H3, was a step backward due to generic universe and graphics (this hasn't been said enough already?).
I can see where you are coming from but im sorry a remake of homm3 exactly the same but with better graphics is not a step forward or taking the series to the next level.... It is simply just a remake of a old game with nothing new to offer. Sounds kind of boring to me

Speaking of spicing things up a little, how about in M&M:H8 we'll get to explore another continent for a change, hmm?

If I wanted to play Heroes3, I would play Heroes3. If I wanted to play new Heroes game, I would play new Heroes game. See, it's easy.
EDIT: That would be interesting to say the least, Avirosb!

Just to say - taking to the next level doesn't mean to do less then before. I'm not defending H3 here and I do not want a remake.IMO - H3 was something extraordinary at it's time but H5 and H6 not.
I'm thinking - do we have anyone on this forum who never played H1,2,3? I mean - is there anyone new on this forum who fell in love with H5 that he is joining this community? Maybe we should create a poll to check.

I think it is easy resumed.
Post here a link to any H5 or H6 online tournament. Then I post actual H3 tournaments (even today), and we see who's bigger
Good game: people want to play against each other. This includes a variety of parameters, as fast playing, simple and clean view of game features, bugs free, decent AI, and so on.

At least we'd get a game which would (hopefully) work right out of the box.

And why do you think 15 years later H3 is still so popular, actively modded and played ?
Because original atmosphere never got the see modern resolutions.
Artistically speaking, the step from 2D to 3D resulted in a complete change of universe, thus making immersion another experience from original one.
ALL old HoMM fans wish to see this very atmosphere well served by modern graphics and resolution. Artists would have to redraw everything, enhance it to the point no one would play previous titles anymore. On top of that fix and improve well known H3 flaws like HoTA is presently doing.
Boring ? HoM&M gaming formula lies in two fundamental components : Atmosphere (graphics) & Gameplay (replayability).
HoM&M3 had successfully established solid ones.
Its formula is certainly not what needs to be changed to improve the game, its a brand that only needs to improve what is already working like a charm, and changes of creatures for the best.

+1
And I actually think they should still try (maybe as a spin-off of sorts) a 2D/2,5D Heroes. Not for the graphics alone, I think simplicity (easier navigation etc) serves TBS games. And arguments like 2D strategies are remnants of a bygone era are not valid. Look at how stylized retro 2D indie platformers (or "pixel" games) are popular these days... and no, Heroes Online is some kind of a half-baked product, not an actual game...

If you think H3 had better GRAPHICS than H5, my words end there, sorry. And don't get me started about the epic H5 soundtrack.
Yes, H5 had a better skill system. But compare the graphics of Heroes V with other games graphics from 2006, then compare the graphics of Heroes III with other games graphics from 1999. The fact is that everything is relative here as software and technology improves year by year. Also this is a matter of taste and personal opinions, these things can't be enforced
