Threads about fundementalist acts such as the original post usually go this way, it's impossible not to involve the concept of religion itself once the cat's out of the bag. I agree we overdid it a little though.

Well I gotta say what's actually On Topic in this context is difficult for me to quite figure out, so I try not to go too deep into any specific direction of discussion and keep everything as general as I can without too many examples.

I think it is about Terrorism coming home, you know, near where a person lives. That's why I gave my gripe about airport security frisking old ladies in wheelchairs.
However, if someone does something in my home town than I would probably feel "Shock" like most folks that think they are outside of the trouble. But as many here at HC have already said m/l; with all the migration and unrest around the world, the anger and desperation, I don't see many places as "safe." I have a few friends in the land down under and I too am surprised but then again it is hard for me to truly be surprised today. Too much crime and murder.

More like too much crime and murder with media coverage. I doubt that it was very different in the past, just fewer people knew about it.
There's also another angle - these things get a weeee bit blow out of proportion when they happen in Europe, the US or the countries with some sort of European legacy but get seriously underestimated or not even noticed when they happen elsewhere in the world. Imagine this happening in the US, or the UK, or somewhere else in the "civilized world", it would be the mainstream topic for weeks ahead with millions of people arguing, sympathizing, yelling at each other and whatnot. But Pakistan? Bah, second grade news, move along.

Well I'm rather annoyed with the whole "we better make maximum respond no matter how low the probability is" mentality that allows for horrible practices against the people who're supposed to be protected for their own protection.
