Newcomer with newcomer questions
Hello! I'm new here and I already wonder about something regarding these forums - why can't I choose some of the avatars, Archangel for example?
'Reserved for another user'? How so?

There's a reserve avatar option in the profile section. You can't use avatars that people reserve. It's a good feature to prevent someone else stealing your avatar (you can have your own custom avatar uploaded if you forward a request after 50 posts). Hope that helps.

Debatable.
Currently there are a lot of avatars which are reserved by users who have been inactive for a long time, thus preventing other users from ever picking them.
It would be much better if Avatar reserve option had a timer, IMO.

But Archangel avatar for example does not belong to whoever reserved it - it belongs to Ubisoft. I don't see how any user has any more right to it than anyone else.
Hence, using the same avatar is barely stealing, since it wasn't theirs in the first place...

IMO only custom avatars should be reserved.

Ideally yes, but I imagine in the current system it would be difficult to differentiate custom avatars from 'standard'
Hence I suggest adding a time limit to all of them.

But then you might loose your custom avatar to some random person personally I think some user activity requirement might be better.

Not if you have already chosen it.

Maybe, but I fear it'd also be difficult to implement.

The what should and what shouldn't be reservable thing aside, I'm confused as to why anyone would get attached to a non-custom avatar enough to make sure nobody else used it.
<- Now that thing right there, that's worth restricting access to.

It was my understanding correct me if I am wrong that if an avatar was not reserved someone else could pick it and than reserve it preventing you from using it.

New user questions
I have a question as a new user. I tried to post this as a new thread, but it wouldn't let me (something about my post count being low), so I'm posting it here instead:
Hi,
I am new to this forum, rarely post online at all, and did try to find the answers, so I apologize if I have not posted to the correct location, any redundancy of answered questions, etc.
I just spent a huge amount of time reading through many, many threads and am a bit overwhelmed by the huge amount of complex information related to the questions I have. Rather than spending days trying to figure those all out, I would sure appreciate it if someone could either point me to threads that explain them in more simply or just explain them here directly. Or if I need to split these questions up and post them to separate threads, I will do so, in which case please let me know where to post them, etc.
These questions are all with regards to Heroes 3.
- If you want to skip a scenario in the campaign and use the cheat to do so, you get a name "cheater" in the high score page, indicating that the fact you used a cheat command to skip a scenario is now somehow stored with all subsequent saves of the campaign. Does this do anything other than the scores page, or is there some other effect? I ended up playing the main game campaign without skipping anything (found other ways to play in the manner I wanted to), but may yet end up having to use this command for the expansion campaigns so still curious to know the answer.
- As I understand it, there are quite a few good mods available and I'm very eager to try some of them. There are several good threads I found discussing these (some in this same forum location), but they tend to get complex or do not mention some of the things I'd like to know, and therefore I'm still very confused.
-- First of all, I would like to find some that are playable games (like the expansions - have campaigns and/or maps) rather than just mod'ing tools, changes to the base game, etc.
-- I found several places to download some of these, but is there some centralized location? I ask because for some other games I've played, there are mod sites with organized databases of mods, descriptions, and ratings/reviews. If that doesn't exist in this case, I understand, but then I'd need to know where is the best location to download these from, the best ones to install, how to install them, if I have to first install some prerequisite package (WoG or a mod manager or whatever), etc.
-- I'd rather not run an exe to install a mod. I will if that is the only method available, but when I download software I usually prefer to install things by hand from zip/etc. files. So if there are links to a zip/etc. version of any of the mods you mention, please let me know. (No exe installs help with multiple installations, anti-virus issues, etc.)
-- Some threads mention you are best off using a mod manager, but that the campaign-based mods aren't always compatible. Understood, but I'd like to know the install instructions specifically for each given recommended specific mod. So if a given mod requires a mod manager please let me know. If it is incompatible, please let me know. Etc.
-- Some of the mods seem to have their own sites or live in multiple locations. I looked at the one for Wake of the gods, but couldn't find what to download. Other sites like "moddb" (found via an internet search for "Heroes of Might and Magic 3 mods download") seem to have their own copies. Where to download these from the most recent, official, etc. sites is extremely unclear to me. And I couldn't tell if WoG had it's own campaigns/maps or not - is it playable or just a platform for other mods? Plus there was a note saying that you should use a new version of that with a different name, but I couldn't tell if that was a branch of the project or the latest name for the same mod. This was getting very complicated and so I did not pursue it any further, but hopefully it is a good example of why I'm posting these questions.
Again, I've found several threads with some of this information, but they tend to get very complex very quickly. I was hoping to find some simplified answers somewhere.
I would really appreciate any help with these questions - thanks

And I should mention that I did see the topic "Magical activities at HC (for newcomers)", which was a great thread, but unfortunately still didn't fully answer the mod-related questions I have here.

Dude, we are in 2015, executables are everywhere. When you download a game from GoG, it is an executable. Every software you install in your computer comes as executable. Yes, executables may hold viruses, but you have an anti-virus for that, right? Something like Kaspersky, for example, not Avira crap. If your anti-virus yells "warning" every time you download an executable, it is trash and should be replaced.
Executables usually come as such and not as simple zip/rar because they have a post command inside, like "install mod here", "run this after install to check compatibility" etc. If you have a valid anti-virus software and also download them from trusted places (HC for example), there is zero risk.
And of course, the only forum you should browse for your questions.

I am sorry this thread didn't answer all your questions, is a general thread with links and pretty straight-forward instructions (but don't be shy with executables ). For more specific questions, feel safe to follow Salamandre's suggestion as to seek help in the WoG forum, you should find fast help there.
Cheers man

Hi,
Thanks for the replies
Sounds like you are both suggesting I do a more specific search in the "Heroes Community > Heroes 3.5 - WoG and Beyond" forum location, then if I can't find the answer there, then post my question there. Correct?
Does that apply to the first question, as well? (about the "cheater" thing)
As far as exe's go, I do understand about that and apologize for my lack of clarity, as I probably didn't phrase that point well enough. I should have said: "If there happens to be a choice of an install via exe or zip/rar/whatever, please point me to the zip/rar/whatever version." Many download-based software packages have a choice between the two install approaches (you can download an exe or a zip/rar/whatever-compressed-format). If someone were to post a link for me to a download, I'm just opting for the zip version rather than exe installer version, if such a choice exists. That's all I meant.
The reasons behind this are various technical issues (such as managing multiple installs, better control over what gets installed and where, etc.), and perhaps in small part come down to viruses, yes (things can still sneak through from time to time, although that's not my main issue and certainly don't mean to offend anyone - I assume the mod makers are doing scans of their work before posting them). Mostly, I rarely download install exe's because I find zip's with data files to be a bit easier to work with. Out of the many things I've downloaded over the years, I've found a lot of them do not use just installers, but rather offer another option of zip files without installers. I wrote a game a while back (my own project in this case) without an installer (although the game itself of course uses an exe) because it is so much cleaner not to clutter up the registry with things that tie the binaries into specific locations. Also, along with that, Microsoft's COM implementation makes multiple installs a huge pain - in a previous job, we had to do all this very ugly additional work just so people could install different versions without them interfering with each other, due to the COM-based DLL's being tied to specific install locations. Anyway, without an installer, you can do great things then like have multiple installations, etc. Not that all installers have to be that way; the installer generator programs like Microsoft's InstallShield just tend to be implemented that way, unfortunately.
But anyhow, if there's a binary that has to run as part of a mod, then yes, an exe is certainly fine. I was referring to the installer.
Sorry for the miscommunication.
Thanks again

No, no, please don't misunderstand; it is a great thread and the instructions are crystal clear, just a few additional details that I don't happen to quite understand (see my original list of questions). I considered just going forwards with what it says and trying one of the mods mentioned there, but decided to try to ask my questions before doing so.

Well, the first move to do is to register in wcl league (this forum main page, then click on wcl world tournament link).
Players from a league are way more serious, finish games then don't spam you every other turn with "hurry up".
The backside is that people from tourney reinvented the wheel and ask for a billion of rules, don't do this, don't do that. Up to you to deal with but before, read in wcl league what mean those rules so you know what's about. Good games!

Note: I attempted to post the following to the proper forum, but I was unable to do so due to "Your post count is insufficient to make another new thread..."
Hi,
I was hoping someone could clarify for me how to save changes into the main campaign data file for Armageddon's Blade. I understand the steps for extracting and modifying the data, but what I am missing is how to actually apply my changes back into H3ab_bmp.lod. It probably does not matter to the answer, but just for additional clarification, what I am trying to do is alter a few hero portraits and a few maps.
I have spent a great deal of time searching for the answer, so I apologize in advance if the answer is already posted and I simply did not find it. I did find several posts that came very close to answering my question.
The closest recommended that I save the changes as a custom campaign, but I already have completed the first two scenarios so I believe that would invalidate my existing save files. It mentions that there is, in fact, a method to save it back to the original .lod file, but it does not specify that method because it says it is more risky.
Another mentioned using a tool called LODEDT, but upon closer inspection, this tool seems to only operate on the original game file, not on others like H3ab_bmp.lod.
I have used resedit to extract the data, but that tool does not seem to have a way to save my changes back into the lod file.
Any assistance would be appreciated, thanks
EDIT: I found another post that mentions you can make modified files from .lod files work simply by placing them directly in the data folder (I suppose separate files there take precedence over what is in the .lod file). Unfortunately, this did not seem to work, I assume because the post was specific to the WOG mod (this feature must not be part of the original game, but an addition in WOG). So I should clarify that my question applies to just the base game + the AB expansion (I had the base game installed then installed the AB expansion). I am installing and playing the expansions in order and not ready to install any other expansions or MOD's yet.
