I actually thought the cutscenes weren't as bad in the vanilla H5. Still, with more expansions, as the gameplay improved, the plot and dialogues went downhill, example above.
Agrael was amusing and well-written in his Inferno campaign, I loved his sarcastic comments about Elves. That standalone scenario however was a disgrace to his character.

Please tell me you did not mean this for real. Not like HoF or TotE had good writing but atleast they didn't make my ears bleed with each and every character.. Each and every one of them.

Can't tell, exactly.

Isabel was a good idea that was poorly executed. Godric was fine, Agrael was cool too. Markal was interesting as well, but perhaps a little too obvious. Raelag had a strange crush, but I also didn't see anything atrocious. Findan... I'm mostly perceiving him as an older and more poetic version of his CoH self, although he does feel a bit monotone. Lastly, Zehir was alright either, if only a bit too young for the title of the First of the Cycle. He was horrible in ToE though. Like, really. Setting off to find a Dragon God, like it's nothing.

Still, I'm sure I wasn't lying or joking there. Perhaps I just have a horrible taste. I'd more than gladly see a remake of H5, of its design and dialogues though.

*SPOILERS!!!*

Agrael was Raelag

The characters were alright other than Isabel and perhaps Findan. Some likable, some passable. But the cutscenes and dialogues were unforgettable and not in a good way.

I see your point... ToE storyline and dialogues were atrocious.

Agreed. Arguably, the text boxes in the Heroes Chronicles games conveyed a lot of emotion and story intricacies as you progressed through the maps and campaigns.

I saw how this worked and quite honestly, I didn't like the textboxes all that much.

I think I liked the textbox+dialogue format of H6 the most, as much as I dislike H6 and its plot itself.

text-boxes aren't for everyone. that said, i feel they forced writers to actually put some effort into their stories since, you know, writing was all they had. they couldn't use character models or cut scenes to convey anything. you had to describe it and describe it well. limitation forced them to actually write something great.

That aside, I keep wondering why all the questionable things in Ashan lore rarely gets questioned. I know the lore lesser than you guys yet it seems I care more. While it is true at this point Grim Rider being a Vampire is one other of the multiple problematic "details" going along this reboot.

I do not claim to have all the answers to that, but I do believe I can identify several greatly contributing factors to that.
In no particular order:

-Questionable is a matter of taste. Doubtless there are people to whom this is perfectly acceptable. Not everybody shares your tastes and standards. (I implore you to not go along the route some others have taken and start saying that people who accept subjectively questionable things aren't entitled to an opinion)

-Not everyone agrees with you in regards to your opinion on how deep the lore influences things.

-Regardless of the previous statement, there are people who do not regard some or all lore influences objectionable.

-There are people who hold gameplay in much higher regard than lore and aesthetics.

-There are people who regard lore and campaigns as trivial fluff for those kinds of people who are into that sort of thing. These people play only single no-story maps and do not read things that do not explain game mechanics.

-There are people who, gods forbid, actually like this lore.

-There are people who dislike the lore and choose not to read it.

-There are people who identify a cycle in the Heroes Games, myself among them. Starting roughly around Heroes 4, or maybe earlier but I was too young at the time and not at all active, that shows that greatly subjecting one aspect of the game to criticism, gives leeway to experiment with others. Heroes 4 was greatly criticised for it's deviate gameplay. Heroes 5 took that criticism to hart and closely modeled the gameplay to Heroes 3, which was widely praised, but experimented with visuals and aesthetics. Heroes 5 was widely criticised for it's visuals and storytelling, it was too Warhammer, too cartoony, too corny and forced, too Warcraft(even then), etc. So Heroes 6 took that to hart and tried a more marketable aesthetic and took more liberties with the gameplay. Heroes 6 was greatly criticised for it's broken and deviate gameplay, very much more than for it's improved storytelling and it's aesthetics. Now Heroes 7 comes along and promises to model it's gameplay more to Heroes 3(and maybe 5) and the focus of criticism shifts again, even before the game is playable in any way, to aesthetics and lore. If this pattern continues, we may have to fear for the gameplay of a possible Heroes 8

This and undoubtably other factors contribute to "lack of questioning" of lore.

If you think some questionable things are being ignored than ask them, but be prepared to accept or aknowladge the information recieved. For example I think you are the only one who has a problem with the Mounted Vampire lore.

@Sligneris
I'm going to accept your taste in writing, even if I do not share it. H5 vanila had, for me, the most boaring characters (Realag, Agrael, Finndan, Markal, Zehir) and some of the most attrocias ones as well (Isabela, Biara, Finndan, Zehir)
Characters in the later games were IMHO atleast likeable (Wulfstan, Gotai, Kujin, Arantir)

I thought only Findan could be boring out of the characters you listed and while I might like the way he is portrayed in H5, I still like him, mostly thanks to Clash of Heroes.

I don't think Zehir was a bad character in vanilla H5? Not to mention Biara, I liked her a lot... Isabel was purposefully naive, but the execution of this naivety was done a bit wrong.

Gotai and Wulfstan were a bit too idiotic for my taste in the late ToE, with these 4rd grader jokes. Arantir overused his motto, and again, just like in Findan's case, his apperance made a better impression on me in another game.

I like H5 characters and story more in concept than execution

For example Zehir. I feel like he was the embodiment of the Mages spirit. Inventive, Extravagant, smartass and opulent. But the execution could be cringy.

Same with Isabel. When you look at the details she is crappy and annoying. When you look with broad strokes you have a good deconstruction of what had become the iconic Heroes story: the queen comes and saves all. Instead you got an emerging queen who doomed the world all yet she isnt evil or bad, just unexperienced and naive.

With this, I can agree. H5 had potential to have better story than H6, but failed...
