HOMM is not a strategy game where players are given finite resources or even the same starting conditions and see where they end up at. From PROJ's views, I take it you are more attuned to RTS or MOBA style games (any kind of competitive gaming), poker or chess which differ so greatly from the TBS/RPG-esque way HOMM is handled.
From what I gather, I am fairly certain you'd say H5 duel mode had more in the way of strategy than H3, right? If that holds true, case in point, I'm done. There's no arguing with you, because the way you perceive 'strategy' is completely different to how 'HOMM' players perceive it. Both sides are further on correct by law of agreeing to disagree.

The degree of abstraction in visuals does not match with the degree of abstraction in game mechanics. The mechanics are extremely abstract, turn based, everything is turned into various points, like hitpoints, movement points etc. At the same time the graphics try to be full 3D which is already a huge step towards realism and away from abstract world. Almost all 3d turn based games have this issue.

Try Age of Wonders 3. It is 3D as well, but has the symbolic feel to it that made the Heroes series so great until Heroes 5 hit us.

I would say until Heroes 6 hit us as Heroes 5 was good when it was all said and done.

Of course. Since they started scrapping so much out and having some features and things dictated by their not-so-good lore.

Well:
*7-tier system in favor of 3-tier one
*specializations (not all heroes had them, or at least without that constant internet connection)
*randomness (especially in the skill system)
*fact that you just flag the dwelling and recruit creatures from your fort/town rather than on-spot
*four magic schools in favor of seven magic schools
*mage guilds (at least we see them in H7)
*the primary stats (they were not divided in attack/defense/spell power/knowledge, but as might or magic attack/defense)
*creatures than can use spells (and no, I don't consider, say, disciple's nova from H7, because it is an ability, for it is not found in hero's spell book nor does the creaute - disciple - use any other spells/abilities)
*number of factions (just five, yet other games had at least six factions in vanilla, besides Heroes 1, which was made 20 years ago)
*no unique scenarios (some were actually being used from campaigns)
*no obelisks, just pieces of disks
*no townscreens (in the beginning, since they were added later with patches)
And other things, but they weren't scrapped, but badly added.

Hmm, forgive me I believe I may have misunderstood your original statement's meaning.

Just saying that Heroes V (despite there being some people that still say it is bad) is still a much better game than Heroes VI because devs didn't start using lore to dictate features, nor did they started changing so many features, just because they wanted.
Take the tier system: H4 changed it to four tier and people didn't like it (though devs compensated it by giving more units of the same tier). H6 used three-tier system and still do it in H7, despite many protests. Nobody ever asked the seven-tier system to be scrapped and to use three-tier.
That's what I mean by scrapping.

I understood what you meant by scrapping. What I was saying was that I believed that your original statement ofEnergyZ said: Of course. Since they started scrapping so much out and having some features and things dictated by their not-so-good lore.
was challenging my original statement that Heroes 5 was good which I see was not the case much to my embarrassment.
