And efreeti hates genies.

I think it's a bit arbitrary to use one rivalry and then define it to be only one. There are probably so very many, and only our imagination limits us, e.g. Champions vs. Dread Knights could also be looked at as rivals. In my opinion as long as Tower isn't chaotic, anything pretty much goes.

I don't think there has to a rivalry between Tower and Dungeon or Tower and Inferno just for those rivalries. And yeah it's all perspective, imagination, I don't see why Dungeon, Inferno and Necro have to be grouped together, or Castle, Rampart and Tower, and much less Fortress, Stronghold and Conflux.

And I think I prefer more the Heroes I and II style for alignment, more simplistic, sure, but it got the point across and was fun.

From III, especially Chronicles I learned the Barbarians are good. Might makes right

good point.

i forgot about the unit rivalries, myself. i guess the designers made it that way on purpose, as having certain towns clearly against certain other towns might get boring after a while. they probably mixed everything up as a replay factor.

Ideologically and historically those rivalries fit. The rivalry between the genies and the efreeti is explained in the heroes chronicles. They are both summoned from the elemental planes (of air and fire) by the magicians. You can find any explanation in the story

If we play that game (Heroes Chronicles) and take it all as canon, which I assume it is, for the 3DO continuity, then Rampart should be rival with Dungeon clearly, and Stronghold with Castle and Tower, and Fortress with Castle, and so much for the "neutral" type

As far as I know, Necros under Sandro just wanted to rule over all and merely used the others, not having a specific rivalry.

And I could argue that Inferno also wanted to rule all, not having ONE rival Town, and I still don't see why group the Streonghold and Fortress as Neutral alignment, they have too little in common, and they have fought each other with no distinction.

Conflux only intervened when it had to, however before that, Tarnum defeated the Elemental Lords who wanted to rule, so I guess their evil tendencies were put to rest by the Immortal Hero.

And may I remind you that the Wizards of Bracada were never do-gooders, from the campaigns and Chronicles I got the opposite impression, and even more so from their boss Gavin Magnus.

Ofc that alignment system fits blizzard games. If we try to make it work with homm3 then we have to go into deep analysis and that s not only about ideologies and history. We have many hints throughout the game from which we can draw conclusions. You just have to study the events

I think that is the beauty of it. The fact that we can discuss about factions. I can give you a good example from wow. Dwarves are part of the alliance, but we have faction of dwarves that are part of the twilight hammer (an evil organization) and dwarves that are against the alliance dwarves (iron/dark dwarves). There are also the frost dwarves that are neutral - good.

Homm lore had a very big potential and from what i have noticed the storyline would have gone in a similar way to wow storyline. I dont know which universe was first but they re very similar. It would be great if we could expand that story

Speaking of Gavin Magnus, my impression of him in MM7 was that he's definitely one of the good guys, an impression that changed a lot when I played his HoMM 4 campaign.

Gauldoth wanted to survive, and as a half-dead Necromancer leading undead and demons, it wasn't quite easy. I liked how many of his opponents were portrayed as fanatics fighting for the cause of "Good".

This is H1-H3 board, but anyway the second H4 expansion campaigns (Winds of war) felt very bland, other than the fact that the Life faction was the enemy.

The Gathering Storm campaign reminded me of SoD story in a broad term, only that you never got to be Hexis, he was just the Dark Lord figure.

And the original Heroes IV campaigns were great, great storytelling, each of them. A shame those characters didn't return.

I think it says a lot I don't really remember the WoW campaigns.. it is my opinion that otherwise, the HoMM 4 campaigns are the best in the series. Most of the vanilla campaigns set very well with me and I liked the heroes join together element of the gathering storm, though I must admit individually I found the original campaign to be better.

The Heroes 2 Roland and Archibald and Heroes 3 campaigns are pretty damn fine too, like setting a standard. And I had a lot of fun with AB and SoD and Heroes 2 PoL campaigns as well.

Edit: It seems my two top picks and the Town of my username's hero are leading, namely Dungeon, Rampart and Fortress
