Norway is the first to turn off FM broadcasting
According to the news, Norway will be first among many countries to completely abandone FM broadcasting and go fully digital after 2017. Am I really getting old or is this like the worst idea ever?
When do people listen to the radio most, although we all have different habits, the country side, long road trips, distant places without any internet connection or cell service... These are the times when we need the radio most, when we desperately need it. Besides, those old school pocket radios go for days unlike your smart phone or tablet which will suck the battery dry in a matter of hours if you play music.
Dont you people like to keep your FM by your side?

Honestly I haven't listened to FM radio in about 20 years. Occasionally I listen to talk on AM, but I almost exclusively listen to XM or my personal music library.

Old technology with radio = two weeks of battery.
New technology with radio = one day with battery because of the screen.

I really wouldn't mind radio broadcasts disappearing. I have many much better devices for listening to music. Talk radio is another story of course, and it is nice but somehow it still doesn't seem that important to me. Anyway, this is a small country, so we have only a few reasonable channels (the publicly funded ones and a couple of others, basically the ones that have actual edited programs), the rest of the channels just play "pop megahits" and commercials in an endless loop.
Actually, it could be interesting to see how the lack of radio would influence popular music. I guess most of the "hits" these days are basically decided by record/broadcasting companies and people accept them as such because they are played on the radio 24/7 ("so of course they must be good!"). With digital radio (and spotify etc.), there is so much more choice. Maybe more people will start listening to music they actually like rather than what their being told to like?
By the way, I've almost never listened to the radio outside of a car. I think car radio might be the most important reason why FM broadcasts have survived to this day (as it is the most common situation in which audio-only entertainment is the only possibility). Soon, cars will probably have internet, so the traditional broadcasts could be replaced by web radio I guess (but on the other hand I can't see how choosing between a practically endless amount of channels could be made convenient while driving).

@ Cor
AM is beyond crap in here, dont know what XM is. I prefer my own archive too, even with digital radio apps with great thematic options or things like Spotify, I constatly have GB's of music stored all the time. Every once in a while, the feeling of just letting go feels good though, especially around company, since I am quite the Nazi when it comes to being the DJ of the crowd and I have a tendency to overconcentrate on the music and ignore the conversation. And wandering through channels in some distant motel room over a cheap pocket radio gives me an "on the road again" feeling, I happen to find even quite poetic.
@ Nitramar
Even if you have internet on your car, you wont have continous service over long road trips, that was my concern. Or I dont know, maybe in small Nordic countries you have access to internet literally all over the country but it's certainly not the situation here, even if you use 3G, the signal may weaken and that's much more expensive to begin with.
@Sal
Oh, the muezzin, playing that timeless hit five times a day. A friend had an apartment with great view on nice neighborhood. We were like "great catch dude." However, there was this one little problem, the minaret was right next to his window. It was like they were singing the ezan right into his ear with a megaphone. It was like that scene from Blues Brothers (or Seven) when the train passes through. (Something that sucks about living in a country that have Muslim majority in modern times, the muezzins really use megaphones now, so all these ezans with 5 second gaps between them bulldoze your ear constantly.)

Well, if it works in small Nordic countries, it probably works in Norway . I don't know about connectivity in Norway, but in Finland we do have 3G coverage pretty much everywhere except in the north (i.e. we have it in all densely populated areas) and even pretty good 4G coverage (see for example this map of one of our major teleoperators). Connection speeds are not consistent though so that is still an issue. Still, I have been quite succesful at listening to spotify on an iPad during a six hour car trip (well, I didn't listen for the full six hours so I might have been lucky). I would excpect that the situation is similar in Norway (?).

I didn't even realize the article said 'digital radio' and not 'internet radio'. In that case this should be quite a minor change from the consumer side, right (just need different hardware but the experience is pretty much the same)? Kind of like the transition from analog TV to digital TV, which happened here a few years ago.
I don't think there's any reason to defend the technology of frequency modulated radio itself if the same result is achieved with another technology.

Well, IF the digital radio broadcast will be just the same, you are right. I, too, immediatily thought of the internet. If it's just a matter of replacing your old equipment with new digital broadcast recieving radios which does not require internet, it's really not such a big deal.

Yeah you don't necessarily need internet for digital radio. You're just switching to a higher quality technology. Same thing as how analog TVs are no longer supported. Richway is the first to announce an official switch, but expect many to follow within the decade. There are certain costs & services involved in supporting both technologies and you have to pull the plug on Great Aunt Bernice sooner or later.
