Town Rankings...

Here's my list of towns in order of their strength.  Note:  This is pretty much verbatim from Spirit of the Forest but I wanted to hear more players' ideas.

1.  Castle.  Gee, could anyone have guessed?
2.  Stronghold.  Would've taken #1 if the Cyclopses didn't compete with the behemoths for crystals.
3.  Fortress.  It's hard to play a Gary Kasparov style with this town but I'll take my bulls to hell and back!
4.  Necropolis.  One of the more polarized towns.  Either you hate it or yer a necrophiliac.  I'll tell you this...1-2k skeletons REALLY worries me.
5.  Dungeon.  Takes a tumble in the rankings but the starting combo of Shakti, Ajit, and Alamar is unbeatable.
6.  Tower.  2nd best units on paper.  What happens though?  They cost too dang much.
7.  Conflux.  Only the power of the Elementalists and the double Phoenix growth saves this town from the trash heap.
8.  Inferno.  Switched places recently because demon farming raises eyebrows as an interesting tactic.
9.  Rampart.  Well, well.  The real kicker is the feedback I'm getting on HOMM4 is that the Preserve is even worse.

Here's an idea Thunder.  Why don't you post your own rankings instead of just critiqing mine?  Blowhards like you crack me up. At least I justify myself when I let my thoughts be known.  You, you probably made snide remarks behind your teacher's back when she scolded you and you never grew out of it, punk.

Your scoulding is wrong. And I thought you had more sense of humour than you seem to now possess. I like to bring strong points out from the towns that are understated. Too bad if you feel offended if I don't think that Rampart is weak town. I don't think that Castle is either, but nevertheless it isn't easy victory for Castle when fighting against Rampart.

About my town rankings, it is difficult to bring them together as I don't have clear preferences for towns I like to play. I rather play with random town. However, I dislike Conflux over other towns and am disappointed if I have to stuck with it. Actually "had", as I rather play Heroes 4 for the moment and other games.

Although it is resource intensive, the Preserve is fantastic to play for several reasons

1) Two Level 4 creatures available (mantis and faerie dragon/ pheonix)
2) Only level 4 spellcaster (faerie dragon) in the game is based here
3) Cheap Level 4 (compared to say, the black dragon)
4) Portal provides elementals
5) Summoning provides extra creatures

and those are just a few... open your eyes!

That’s my town ranking. I won’t explain the reasons, cause it’s too long and they have already been mentionned.

1: Castle
2: Rampart
3: Dungeon
4: Stronghold
5: Tower
6: Necropolis
7: Fortress
8: Inferno
9: Conflux

My favourite town is Rampart, but I admit Castle is THE ultimate town...

The Gootch is an ugly person  he doesn’t like Rampart and he said in the thread “Spirit of the forest” :

“The Rangers can be pretty good. Kyrre has logistics, Mephala has armorer, and Ryland starts with diplomacy (1 skill I have a new found respect for). Unfortunately, his specialty shores up a pathetic creature and therefore is diminished in value.”

I think he has been blinded by some War Unicorns to say such fool words.

Of course Ryland rocks

everybody plays differently so the towns suit each individual player differently. This is my ranking (the explanations are long and complicated):

1.Tower
2.Castle
3.Rampart
4.Dungeon
5.Conflux
6.Stronghold
7.Fortress
8.Necropolis
9.Inferno

You can see that i'm kinda bias towards good (ie. not evil) towns. Maybe its my morals getting in the way.

I really do think the Gootch subscribes to the

'anything that looks good can't be worth having' school of thought.  Just because something has aesthetic value, doesn't mean it has no practical application..

Here's my list:

1) Castle (duh).
2) Tower (They may be expensive, but, oh, lord, they're
just so powerful!  Titans are incredible, Genies and Arch Mages are very good, Naga Queens are mind-blowingly good.  Not to mention the Tower's aptitude for magic.  They would probably be number one if they weren't so expensive.)
3) Necropolis.  You either love 'em or hate 'em.  I happen to love 'em, mostly because of Dread Knights and Vampire Lords, even if Ghost Dragons suck.
4) Dungeon.  They're just an all-around good town.  Three Flyers, two shooters, and the Magic-resistant Black Dragons.
5) Fortress.  Mighty Gorgons Rule!  Other creatures aren't that bad, Lizard Warriors and Wyverns notwithstanding.
6) Stronghold.  They're okay, I guess.  Thunderbirds roc (get it?  Ha ha ha...)
7) Rampart.  They're fairly good at the start, just because Centaur Captains are arguably the best 1st-level unit, but they tend to lose steam later in the game, partly due to slow units.
8) Conflux.  Right from when it was introduced, this town never stood out much.  It was just another town.  Nothing really good about it, but it doesn't SUCK, like the...
9) Inferno.  God, I hate them.  Were it not for the Efreet sultans, they'd be completely worthless.  Pit Lords are LAME, Demons are LAME, Familiars are SO LAME it hurts.  Magogs and Cerberi are average at best.  Arch-devil's don't scare me worth a damn.

This is all just my opinion, of course.  I welcome criticism.

I wouldn't say that the conflux is exactly the weakest town. Sure, the water, fire, and earth elementals are lame but since you can't usually hire all of a town's creatures with your average weekly income, just don't hire them. By just hiring the others, you will have an affordable and powerful army of sprites, storm elementals, magic elementals and phoenixes.

There has been a lot of comment on the weakness of air/storm elementals to lightning bolts. However, we must also take into account that they have approximately twice the hp of other 2nd level units overall, they aren't that much worse off, and unless another hero uses solely lightning spells, storm elementals are going to be better than any other 2nd level creature. Cheers.

conflux: dragon killer or dragon fodder

pros: maximum weekly generation of 4 phoenix (wo/ grail)
     no retaliation bonus of sprites
     magic restistance of magic elementals
     low cost of phoenix

cons: weak hp of magic elementals
most heroes expertise in creature or weaker spells (except magic arrow - nothing stands out like offense, sorcery, or logistics)
aside from sprites/phoenix, relatively slow troops
     lightning susceptibility of air elementals

I've always thought that conflux was too heavily dependent on the phoenix overall.  much like fortress, its troops needs the upgrades (or tactics) for the shooting/speed increases to be a more balance army.  No particular creature stands out for its level and my typical strategy to use conflux troops has been to overwhelm in sheer numbers.  and the school of magic is no where near as useful as the tower's library.
