I must have played this campaign about 6 times over now, 3 times for both factions.
I even tried the betrayal option, but it's really not worth it. Too bad..
In answer to the question: my first pick was to fight for Roland.

The first "brother" I picked up was Roland. I liked the idea of righteous knight who fights for old ideals that were rooted in his homeland.
Archibald was interesting too, that's why after passing the campaign with Roland, I picked up his brother. Impressions were different, but also interesting, although I'm glad I chose Roland first. Necromancers are indeed appealing, but leading knights is the thing I enjoyed the most.
Besides, it was years ago. I was keen on Robin Hood story and even if Roland's story is different (although we can find some common points between Robin and Roland), it reminded me a lot about Robert Locksley trying to bring justice upon the land which was covered in darkness and was left without its king (although Richard the Lionheart was not dead ).

Someone who gets the whole 'Fight for Righteousness' ideal! Beautiful!
I, also, wanted to see what it was like to fight on the other side, because I've always enjoyed viewing the different perspectives, even if the side I fight for is fighting against a side I've just served. But, in the end, it was always Roland.
I like that comparison that you've made. I, too, have found the stories of Robin Hood interesting and inspiring. But, the general 'Good' definition that applies to both of those characters, and many other heroes in other stories, are what draw me to them.
The shining knight dispersing darkness with his blade of virtue is an enjoyable role to play.

I chose Roland because he fights for honour and justice and good shall always overcome evil..... Unless you play as a Necromancer or Warlock then you will probably win

I will grant you that, even a new player will destroy if they get dragons (I will say that this part of the game is a little imbalanced, hard to purchase, or no).
However, in the case of Warlocks missing in action, it all depends on how well the player is able to use their race. Necromancers, like all of the others, have their strong points, but I think that they are generally able to compete equally with the other races.

Always with the evil guys - good has this aura of idiocy, while evil is so smart and cunning.
Anyway - getting bone dragons turn 3-4 makes the missions with Archie too easy, so for some thrills one may want to cross over to the damaged brother's site );

I played the campaign on Archibald's side at first but I've found that I enjoyed playing for Roland more thanks to the Wizard town.

Even if Archibald wipe out Kreegans we still could get Inferno Town in Heroes 3. If someone played Conquest of the Underworld, they coupd live in Enroth Core like was with Sheogh on Ashan.
I liked Archibald Side, Warlock in H2 was OP. Sadly, they made Roland a Winner. Same goes for Sandro in SOD. Why he needed a puppet king if he posses 2 most powerful artifacts and was Commander of Undead Army.
