melee penalty
It might end up a silly question, but I got MMH6 recently and I cannot find in-game information on which shooters do have melee penalty and which do not. I am curious, is trial and error the only way to learn it?

For as far as I know, you can only see if shooters do full or half damage. Take a look at this:
You can find all the creature stats and modifiers. Might Damage, Might Defense, Health, Initiative and all. I looked for info on Melee penalties, but didn't find it. You may want to check the unit abilities listed below, those pretty icons. They give you info on what your creature is capable of. I don't know for sure if information on melee penalties for shooters is actually there, even though I played H6 a lot. It's not something I actually thought about much.
Anyway, if you have other questions about H6, feel free to ask them . I will try and answer them as best as I can.

Thank You for trying to answer
Actually I researched in-game info about creature abilities. Not a single one has an ability saying 'no melee penalty'. I was playing stronghold campaign and noticed that upgraded cyclops do same damage in melee as while shooting while centaurs and goblins don't. However creature description, stats & abilities is silent about it.
Perhaps someone here will know if there is another case like cyclopi.

No.
Each shooter has a melee penalty. Cyclopi are not technically shooters. They have a special ability that allows them to shoot - Burning Rage.
You may find "similar" cases with Centaurs - melee penalty but special ability Maneuver that allows them to shoot when retaliating and Dreamwalkers which can apply their damage over time ability from a distance but are considered melees.
