The NRA that once supported gun control
http://www.salon.com/2013/01/14/the_nra_once_supported_gun_control/
Interesting article that goes through the development of the NRA (National Rifle Association) from the 19th century to its current status in the 21st century as a mega-proponent of guns in every sector (lobbying to militarize schools, campuses, etc). The article goes through the immediate post-Civil War (1860s) to the crime wave of the 1920s, to the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, to the current state of today. For the non-Americans here (or Americans... some of this was news to me) that are perplexed by the US's addiction/dependency on firearms, and want to understand the root of the symptoms better, the NRA is the behemoth within the country concerning firearm advocacy, and knowing the history of the NRA will help you to better understand the subject. It is a social phenomenon that began in the later 20th century; before that US policy & public opinion wasn't so different than most other places. Revisionist interpretations of the conventional understanding of the 2nd amendment have been used to spearhead the NRA lobby efforts in more recent years.

i was a member of the nra. until i realized that it was just another propaganda machine, bent on keeping the firearms market fat with cash(i have no doubt they are paid to do so by that very market).
that said, i think they should keep it up, as the opposers are just as bad, with their propaganda(and are no doubt, paid by people trying to keep the general public from gaining too much power).
they balance each other out, i think. i firmly believe that no one side will ever win, in the american firearm debate. because neither side will budge; and because neither side will do what it has to to prevail over the other.
it's a stalemate, and it directly ties into how the government and the governed populace will never be able to move on one another in the U.S., to see their ideals through.

The crowd in favor of more gun control has little to gain financially from the efforts, which the same cannot be said for the NRA, though admittedly that doesn't keep them away from a few sensational arguments (the gun control crowd - on the whole - is of course right... Americans prior to the 1960s widely understood this, even if we have since abandoned that identify).

Quote: (and are no doubt, paid by people trying to keep the general public from gaining too much power).
??? It is impossible for the general public to gain any power from guns, because any attempt to force their will with guns is criminal activity
Quote: they balance each other out, i think. i firmly believe that no one side will ever win, in the american firearm debate. because neither side will budge; and because neither side will do what it has to to prevail over the other.
??? except that the NRA is totally winning.

Since politicians pushing for war don't get snow, but politicians pushing for free healthcare gets shot in the head, maybe it's time for better gun control.

Interesting read. I used to be puzzled about why Americans have such a relationship with guns, but I eventually just concluded it as a cultural difference we have. But apparently NRA has had a big impact on making it as such.

This article would be better in the gun thread, too many extremely similar threads turn out confusing in the long term, you cant remember where to search a specific post and the arguments get spread out all over the place.

The Constitution plainly says every citizen has the right to keep and bear(carry) firearms. In other writings of the founders they said everyone should be at all times armed.
Obstructing the rights of citizens to keep and carry firearms only hurts the good guys. Criminals don't care about laws.
Gun crimes can't be stopped, only mitigated. If every adult walked around armed a potential mass murderer would be able to shot far fewer people. And of course most crimes are committed by repeat offenders so you basically have to lock them up and throw away the key or execute them if you are serious about crime prevention.
Oh, and "gun free" zones are shooting galleries for mass murderers. Most mass shootings occur in gun free zones
And of course soon 3D printers will become more common so people will be able to simply print out their own guns.
The NRA is on the right side of history and morality. It is simply wrong to deny people the right of self-defense

It's so amusing to see some folks believing in 3D printers like in the power of Kickstarter without a single clue how they really work.

So why aren't there more mass shootings in countries with restrictive gun laws?
Face it. More guns means people unfit to carry them will have a much easier time getting them and the NRA is on the wrong side.

good job collecting all of these, can anyone add any of the remaining painfully generic "arguments" in favor of guns which may be missing from this list lol

Considering the recent track-record for US-cops that would probably end in more deaths...

If you pay each cop 2500 dollar a month for 120.000 us schools then your solution costs: 7.2 Billion dollar a year.
..and it may not even help if somebody starts shooting with an assault rifle at the other side of the building complex, around 20 people will be dead before the cops arrive and then they still have to take the shooter down.

But those two cops already patrol the area and drink coffee while munching on a donut anyways, so it wouldn't cost any more from the government. Not talking about hiring 2 extra cops per school, merely relocating 2.

Before or after they start drinking?
Since the element of surprise (and the initiative) is always with the psychos/criminals/drunken students , guns and weapons in general are pretty darn useless for actually saving your life. To be honest, not much CAN save your life at that point. If someone sticks a piece of metal to your back and demands money, even a minigun and an Abrams tank in your backpack won't be of any use, I'm afraid. Much like when you're a student, eating lunch and chatting with your buds when a psycho kicks in and starts shooting. I bet most people would just freeze in shock, you actually need training (or a natural instinct which not many people have) to keep calm, odds are you'll just piss your pants and die few seconds later.
