Getting back into the game
So, I remember quitting this game when I realized that enemy turns in TotE took outrageous time making impossible to play large maps or some campaign scenario.
I was wondering, has the situation improved?
I got a much stronger videocard than before and my cpu is an intel i7 920, will the bloody AI work faster?
Also, are there any recommended mods I should install?
I remember that there was the chance to play old campaigns/scenario with the TotE expansion, what do I need?
also, I would like to play the old material without the ToTE new units spoiling the gameplay, is it possible?
And what about the AI turns? Is there a 100% working bug-free and campaign ready custom AI that shortens them without gimping the AI?

The Ai has been reprogrammed by Quantomas and is now much faster:
the standalone Ai can be downloaded here:
http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=34594
If you also want might/magic classes, new artifacts, new adventure objects, better RMG and generally more content try my mods (use links in my signature, will also have fast Quantomas AI)

There are two mods that you should consider. One is Quantomas' AI patch that can be found here. It significantly increases ai speed and intelligence. However, I'm not 100% sure that you can use it for campaigns. The second mod is Might and magic Heroes 5.5, which is based on previous one, but adds tons of new stuff and modifies skills (check it's thread) and is 100% compatible with campaigns (I finished them all).

You can find those campaigns here. You will be able to play them in TotE, but with all of the features (such as alternative upgrades) of TotE.
My advise, go with MMH5.5 and these campaigns, it is great experience
EDIT: And I was beaten here by creator of MMH5.5

Thank you guys.
The mod looks very promising, but I would like to experience "Vanilla" TotE first, as I missed it.
About the Qantomas AI, does anyone know how does it perform in campaigns?

There are critical issues between Campaign scripts and Quantomas AI 31j (only in MMH5.5 those have been solved) if you want to play the campaigns 'vanilla' then you should better play with the old AI.

Besides, AI slowness is not big of an issue in campaigns, as they are mostly heavily scripted, and there are few scenarios where AI is that critical, iirc.

Is there a full changelog for 5.5?
Also is it compatible with the skillwheel mod?

MMH5.5 has 3 classes per faction instead of 1, the skill system needed to be adjusted for that (also the TOE skill system had major balance issues, which have been adressed).
MMH5.5 has its own ingame skilltree mod see this thread for details:

Looks nice, I really like it.
Especially the new portraits, did you make them yourself?
Is this the final version?

The new portraits are mostly from the deceased online game HOMM Kingdoms, which had an identical 2d style.
Even I don't know what the final version is since new issues can popup when users report them.
The current version however has very little reported issues.

Ok, sold.
Are the old campaigns/scenarios already packaged in, or should I download it from the link you guys provided?
Also, does the AI take advantage of the new stuff? I wouldn't like to have the game turned to easy mode because AI cannot exploit stuff like I do.
For short , how's the general consensus on balance? I am particularity worried about the level-up speed which seems too high.
And about the skills...do you recommend to play with 6 or 8 skill slots?
Isn't 8 skills too much for a single hero?
(EDIT: I see this si non-issue in campaigns as the limit is 6)

-MMH55 is all in one installation
-Quantomas AI is by far the best AI ever made for any heroes game, but for campaign this is less relevant since the campaign is heavily influenced by preset armies and scripted events. The AI can use all new stuff.
-There is a level cap in the campaign, in any case the level up speed is the same as in TOE except lvl 30-40, those were practically unreachable in TOE.
-XL maps from adv RMG generate huge neutral mixed armies for gameplay with 8 skills/lvl 40.

Oh a small warning, H55 has new difficulty level 'impossible' above heroic for multiplayer/RMG maps, but I'm not sure the campaign can be completed on it. The recommended campaign difficulty for average player would be 'hard'

Fine, I'll play the campaigns on Heroic.
What about the scripted armies, did you tweak them too?
Like adding alternate upgrades to them and such?
Would be a bit unfair for the AI to face me with the new tactical flexibility offered by the new upgrades and artifacts.

Very clear, thank you.
One last question:
Has the mod a different executable so I can keep vanilla too?

I just installed the HoMM55 mod and Quantomas's AI mod. If I launch the game with the MMH55_64.exe, will it use the AI mod?

Yes, you didn't need to install QAI standalone at all, in fact now you should remove EE_Options.pak and EE_txt.pak from your data folder because it is a conflicting mod as the installer explained under: IMPORTANT
