coming back to game -- some questions
I have not played HOMM6 for at least a year, but am starting to play it again. There are a few things that I have forgotten about some of the mechanics, so here are a few questions:
1. Is there a way to skip the opening splash screens?
2. The game sometimes freezes on me -- often with a black screen. I have to use task manager to stop it and then start over from last save. Are there any hints on how to cure this?
3. I see a map editor, but cannot figure out how to really make it do what I want. All I would want to do is to get an overview of a map so as to get a sense of where things are. Any hints on what tools to use to accomplish this?
4. I cannot seem to find my save games on my hard drive -- where should they be located?
5. If I want to load some player created maps -- where should I put the *.scn files for them so that they will be available?
Thanks in advance.

1: There is a way to skip a screen or two, yes. The first, showing Ubisoft's logo transform into Might and Magic is unskippable. Whatever comes after can be dismissed by pressing ESC. You then see a second screen before the menu shows up. That's at least how I do it, I don't know if everything can be skipped .
2: When do these black-screen freezes occur? I encounter them sometimes when entering a battle (which is a reason why I decide to fight on Quick Combat most of the time), and there's nothing you can really do about it, I think. Even with patch 2.1.1 these problems occur. You can check online of there are people who found a solution.
3: I never used this feature , can't help you with that.
4: I suppose they are not located on your harddrive, but are stored online. I've been looking for them as well, but to no avail. The game synchronizes your saved games with the Cloud whenever you quit or start, so that's probably the answer. You can delete your saves in-game (unlike in Heroes 3, for instance).
5: That's something I haven't tried either, so my advice here would be to search for it online (Ubisoft forum, other forums) .

1. I do not know where the logo videos are stored but perhaps you could move/rename them so that they won't play when you start the game. I know it works for H7, never tried with H6.
2. There was an unofficial solution but I forget. Have you updated your graphics drivers and fully patched the game?
3. The map editor is a pain, I do not remember much about it. But it was reused from a previous BH game so the transition into heroes was not exactly smooth. Many features just didn't make sense, like having to paint the map with combat paint along with terrain paint. Otherwise you could not have battles. Relics could appear in random minor artifacts if you clicked for all artifacts to appear. Madness.
4. You should have saves both locally and online via cloud. No idea where though. I recall that cloud sometimes deleted your saves, I had turned it off just to be safe.

4. I have a folder under My Documents, labled "Might & Magic Heroes VI". I think that's where the saves are kept, for it also contains ProfileData, DynastyData etc.

This is the feature that still appears within my game while I was playing it. One of the 'fix' that I remember is this, but it never worked for me. Maybe it will for you.

Thanks to all that responded so quickly.

I'll look for that. I have discovered that the opening cut scene can be skipped by hitting space bar -- probably ESC works there also.

I had looked, and one of the referenced solutions has been removed by the site. There was another suggestion that may work -- I'll try it and see. For now, the only thing that helps is frequent quick saves via the F5 key.

I recall map editors for previous versions that did what I wanted fairly easily -- namely just get a look at the entire map to help plan what to do and where to go. I've been fiddling with the MM6 editor and maybe I can learn how to do that -- but as you say, it is a pain.

How do you turn off the cloud saves? I have not yet found any place where saves are on my hard drives.
How is MM7? I tend to wait a while before buying a new game in order to let the bugs get fixed and for the price to drop.

All screens can be skipped. Open your ProfileData file with Notepad and change <SkipOpening>false</SkipOpening> to <SkipOpening>true</SkipOpening>.

Thanks - I found that and changed the setting. Worked fine.
Now if I could just find a way to eliminate (or reduce) the number of times that I get a black screen when starting combat and have to do Alt-Tab and Task Manager to kill MMVI and start over.
I notice that MMVI uses a fairly large amount of memory -- more than 1Gbyte and that when the black screen happens it is chomping up a lot of CPU time with no visible result.
