I think the biggest difference between the Stones and the Things is the fact that the Stones more or less have been true to their style, while the Things, probably due to their commercial unsuccessfulness changed it a couple of times.
With Parachute we are deep in Psychedelic Rock territory that the band started into by doing the first Rock Opera (before Who's Tommy) called S.F. Sorrow - pretty excellent, and spot-on in terms of zeitgeist. (That is a fine album as well, you can take a listen here in MONO); Mono sounds better, it seems).
While SFS is London 68 alright, the next one, Parachute, was significantly darker and more "grown-up", so-to-speak. You can listen to the full album here.
I still listen to it regularly. Great structure. It's a really great album.
