Sadly, I do not consider myself one anymore. I have great memories of Heroes 1 through 5 but those days are behind me now.

9, with remarks.
Heroes II is yet to be bested when it comes to light-hearted fantasy atmosphere and some niche but rather bold gameplay decisions (different upgrade tiers per faction for example).
Heroes III is the all-around champion, a high quality product from the very beginning with unmatched map editor and fairly decent RMG. Armageddon's Blade could have made it revolutionary in many areas and shape a different future for the HoMM franchise - but it didn't.
Heroes IV left the impression of something potentially great which never became what it should have been - the best entry in the series when it comes to music, storytelling and innovation attempts (not all of which were good or even decent though).
Heroes V introduced both Ashan with its overwhelming mediocrity and some good (and in the end - decently implemented) ideas. The 3D was unnecessary but rather acceptable. It started like a rough diamond in a cesspool and ended like a rough diamond. The last entry in the series worth mentioning.

NWC master race. Didn't really get into H5 until recently, and then the series died.

Pro HoMM
Heroes II & Heroes III made so huge impact on me, back in the days. Still even today I consider these two as best PC games ever made!
Heroes IV is far from masterpiece but it has it's own "charm", it's completely different that's for sure.
Heroes V is my opinion a honorable 3D grafic edition of Heroes 3. If you don't mind 3D this easy follow up to original Heroes 3. (If you look past the Dark Elf nonsence)
Voted 9. But, honorable mention I gotta say Might & Magic Clash of Heroes, played it first on DS then later on improved version on Ps3, I have it also on tablet but liked it on Ps3 the best. It has very little to do whit original HoMM gamestyle but it's nice tactical game whit Heroes V related characters, play it if you haven't yet.

Heroes V was a decent try to add a one D. My first feelings were like I was playing H2 in 3D.

Someone please put the H6 or H7 graphics into 5 and I would like 5 as well.
Are you saying you dislike warcraft graphics?
Yes I am. It's shame that not liking the graphics seems to be reason enough not to enjoy a game that is great in terms of gameplay.

Voted no. 9, the last two games simply don't cut it for me. While i do believe h7 could become okayish i don't think Limbic has the Know-How to do so. Also i detest the new name heroes will always stay Heroes of Might and Magic for me. But it's a great way for distinguishing the real games from the wanna bes.

Joke or not, why not accept the challenge? It will be a highly fictionalized account of your 'MMH7 fandom', but that might be as good a read as the real stories shared in this thread.
I have nothing further to explain on my choice, unless people have questions about it. I do however like to briefly talk about mods. Usually I'm no big fan of them, but that depends on how much something is changed compared to the original. I have HotA for H3 and Equilibris for H4 installed, and used to have WoG. HotA with its Cove faction (among other things) is absolutely brilliant. I haven't tried H5.5 yet, and by the looks of it there is a lot extra/different from the core game. It can both embellish or deteriorate my gaming experience. Still, it's awesome to see people get creative with those games, which proves the attractiveness of the older ones. H7 is doing its best to join that party, but I think the bouncer won't let it in yet. H6 was probably never even invited . I suppose I could enjoy H6 mods (for as far as there are any), if they don't go too far.

The pro-HOMM anti-MMH fan
I started playing the series with h2 and enjoyed something from each game till h5 which to me was the culmination of the series in its final form. H6 had many good ideas, but couldn't really live up to them, not to mention it had so many flaws and bad ideas also. H7 was just h6 revival while trying to throw some random stuff from previous games without actually understanding why those things were good in previous games.

NWC for life, fo sho.
H1-H4, but mostly H2-H3, deliver the goods to this day and beyond.
H5 has its moments and ideas too.
I'd like to see testimony from one who started out with the Ubisoft titles, liked them, then discovered the NWC titles/universe and dropped the Ubi ones like a bad habit, or at least saw them for their inferior quality.
Converts who shunned the dragon gods and 3-d spider glow-goop for demonic aliens, blasters, and 2D hand-drawn awesomeness !!
: D
(Conversely, it could be interesting to see testimony of pro-Ubi/anti-NWC ones too... but then, it might be under consideration that those people might not receive cookies from the dark side at this round table discussion : D )
