Sylvan Strategy; Lets Talk Sylvan Please!!
Hello peeps.
I'm New to HOMM V! If you've seen a previous discussion on strategy of Academy, I had a discussion going at the end talking about my fall... Mostly, cause I had no idea what I was doing!
Moving on from the Fall of my Academy, I started a NEW game, now my second full game playthrough... I'd rather even my score with AI at 1-1...
So, to introduce what I've done so far!!
Chose Sylvan. Captiol (or first city) is Falltyl. For unknown reasons, I started with 3 structures built. Idk why, maybe cause difficulty is easy, or maybe a Race feature! Idk. Starting with Tavern, Village hall, and Faerie Trees all built already. For the first week +, here are the structures I built, starting on Turn 1, and on;
1- Faerie Wood -First turn, before leaving city, I built FW, and got the new Faeries for Hero, so she started with 21.
2- Battledance Terrace
3- Blooming Grove
4- Town Hall
5- Hunter's Cabin
6- Battledance Arena
7- Hunter's Lodge
By end of week 1, I was able to upgrade first 3 units their improved unit upgrades, with more Pixies recruited from the Grove, and more gold from the Town Hall. Why no Mag Guild? At this point, my Hero is out galavanting around the map, fighting the first low level fights, gaining mines... I even Freed another Ranger from a "Prison" on map, getting a free hero. No chance stopping by town, no reason to have spells ready!
Moving on;
8- Unicorn Glade
9- Magic Guild L1. -Haste, Eld. Arrow, Fist Wrath!
10- MG L2. -Endurance, Ice Bolt, Vulnerability!
As for city, that's where I'm at in game.
First Hero, I recruited Direal the Swarm Queen. Sounded intriguing! she has, with first recruits of Pixies, 21, and started with 5x Bladedancers by default.
Starting Stats; A/D/SP/K/M/L & Mana (has/allowed); 0/2/1/2/1/0 & 20/20.
For starting bonus, I decided to go more aggressive, and chose first artifact as bonus. Direal started with Necklc of Lion (+1 Morale).
Direal first SKills are Basic Avenger, & Basic Summoning Mag with Swarm Queen spcl.
Making L2 Ranger, I had chance at Imbue Arrow, Deadeye Shot, Basic Light Mag, but I chose Advanced Summoning Mag. Unsure if I should go for those others, I decided to focus on one I already had.
Unsure the other options L3-5...
By Level 5, Direal has; Basic Avenger, Expert Summoning, Basic Defense, Basic Enlightenment.
Under Expert Summoning, I have learned the ability Master Conjurer.
At one point, I had chance to increase either Attack or Defense by +2 for either. Being Range, I thought I'd improve more Defense than Offense, to protect my units farther in game. +2 Defense from the Gladiator Arena it was.
Turn 7, Direal picked up Tunic of the Carved Flesh artifact. +3 SP, but -1 Morale. Unsure if I should keep? Suggestions? It obviously counters the Arti I started with, which is +1 Morale. Is it worth it for +3 SP?? At least Morale is at 0, not -1, which is where it would be without that Lion Necklace.
Same turn, 7, I freed Anwen from the Prison.
At L1, Anwen, also a Ranger, has 13x Fearies and 5x Bladedancers.
Stats (same format); 0/2/1/20/0 & 20/20.
She starts with Basic Avenger and Basic Defense, and Spclty in Sword of Sylvana, gaining +2% attk vs any units on Sylanna List.
Under Ability, under Basic Defense, Anwen has a Protection Bonus vs any Magic for all troops. Forgot what it's called.
SO... That is where it's AT!
For Direal, I wanted to focus on Summoning and Earth spells... however, I now have 4 skills chosen, room for only two more, and have not discovered any chance for Basic in Earth. So... I may forget that idea. Further, town now has 2x Light spells, and I have had chance for Light spell skill (two opportunities). So... SHOULD I go for Light, and Summoning?
Second Hero could maybe seek out Earth instead! Idk!
Suggestions?
I'm on an 8 player map, but I closed one slot, removing one player. So 7 Players on 8 player map. Hopefully I find that free town before others do!!
It's the map having to find and hold a Nuetral town in the middle, with everyone starting on the outside edges of map! Forgot what that's called! Haven't played map yet, I'm assuming, there is 9x Cities, counting 8x player starts, and the Neutral that all will run for.
Feel free to comment on Sylvan Strategy!! Please keep it CLEAN! Respectful! If I made any mistakes already, be respectful about it, and not judging me. I am learning. Advice and suggestions are welcome. Questions? Please Ask. Screenshots? Idk how to put them here when shots are made through Steam... but feel free to check out my steam profile. I will further more comments here, to keep you guys in loop how game is going!
Thanks all.

Not much use upgrading dancers, they are hardly useful in creeping. What you initially need are sprites(with as many split into 1 unit so that their swarm does 12 dmg), hunters(upgraded on day 8) and druids(once you have them split those instead of sprites for maximum lightning dmg).
Come week 2, skip treants and go straight for dragons/castle, if the map contains enough gold. Actually ditch treants anyway. Build the rest of the units but no need to hire them. Starting with 3 dragons on week 3 is awesome.
With Dirael you will probably want rain of arrows too ^^ Don't get more skills unless it is logistics. In fact don't pick more than 3 skills before you have a measure of control over your build.
Also sylvan being a ranged race is a misconception. It can certainly be played like that(and you probably should if you play summoning) but the real strength of sylvan lies in charging and butchering enemies with avenger and multi-attacks. When you try it consider getting retribution and aura of swiftness(or alternatively tactics/familiar ground if the map allows it).

OOPS!!
On many reasons! Consider, I finished message last night after day 10, half way through Week 2. Although I wasn't expecting immediate replies, because there were none, I had nothing to go off of, and wanting to get back in game, I continued to play from where I left off. I went through week 5 entering week 6 before I went to bed!
In summary, one other player defeated, but I have yet to see any player find me or my kingdom. I have found Neutral Player, grey, unsure if the Closed slot I closed off in beginning, or the objective city. Meanwhile, both my heroes are doing well, trying to give Anwen different skills than Direal. I have atleast 1 every mine, maybe 2 of all, or most. Just not able to capture that city!! It has 5 Phoenixes, a bunch water Elementals (with CASTING?) and a bunch of Death Knights! Nothing else defending, and it's Nuetral! I've tried attacking few times, but I the one time I killed all 5x Phoenixes, they revived them self! I didn't know what that meant when I seen that in the description, but if they do that? How to kill them? How to defeat the Neutral Base?
I follow up after this comment with more specific updates pertaining to the game, following turn 10. this just a summary.
BTW... if your please... what is Creeping? What does it refer to, or define as? I'm assuming, the act of exploring your general area, defeating neutrals, and establishing your economy?!? yes or no?? I wanted to clarify!!

By the end of Week 2, for Falltyl, I got MG 3 (with Rel Mt, Fireball, EQuake, & summon Creatures), Marketplace, Unicorn Garden and City Hall.
Both heroes worked together clearing more neutrals. Anwen gained Leadership, and Diplomacy early on, now picking up many low levels.
Week 3, first day, Capitol for Falltyl is complete. Followed by Fort, Citadel, Mystic Pond, Sparkling Ftn, and Castle. Sometime mid week, I skipped a day building, I don't remember why now. Could been resources, or lack of.
Mid week, my second Hero, Anwen, a L4 than, gained Basic Sorcery. @ L6, gained Deadeye shot.
Meanwhile, Direal @ L9, gained new arti Ring of Vit, all creatures +2 HP... that's huge!
Week 4, I finished Res Silo, Av Guild (idk what to do with this, or how to use it), than Avengers Brotherhood (same thing, upgraded Av Gld). Stone Circle, and Stone Ring.
During week 4, Direal found Dragon Talon's Crown, +3 K & + 10% ini of War Machines. She also gained Dragon Teeth necklc, +3 SP & 10% ini for army.
Mid week 5, Falltyl finally got MG 4, which come with Magical Imm, and Meteor Shower. Good thing, cause Direal has Destrcutive Mag. Sweet!
Anwen gained Helm of Chaos, +3 K, but -1 Defense. Not worried about the setback, she has HIGH D anyway. She also gained Ncklc Bldy Claw, +1 dmg to all creatures... and also got Ring of Broken Will, -2 Morale of all NME creatures. A 2nd Tunnic Carved flesh from Direal was given to Anwen. Agn, +3 SP and -1 morale.
As of this point in game, mid week 5, Anwen a L10 Ranger, now with these stats, same format; 2/8/5/9/2/0 & 60/90. Only has 25x Consrcipts (picked up with diplomacy), rest of Ranger troops went to Direal for bigger fish!!
Week 5 or six... at this point in my screenshots, I can't tell difference... I did build Treant Arches, and Alcove.
By week 6, Direal picked up Trident of Titans, boost to Lightning spells. She a L14 Ranger, and camping outside a Necro Neutral city of Amel-ishkun (known as Amel), gaurded by a Phoenix, Water Elementals, and Death Nights. I want the city, I can't get through those Defenses. Shortly after this, I did build the Dragon Alter in Falltyl. I barely have any resources to complete a full load of recruitment.
Anwen is finding a lot more to exploit around Amel... including more mines, but lots creatures!
At one point before final save, I have screen shot of Direal & Co facing those defenders of Amel...
57x M.Hunters, 6x Ancient Treants, 61x War Dancers, 83x Sprites (or pixies? whatever is upgraded), 22x S.Unicorns, 22x Adv Druids (forgot what they're called aswell)...
... against 5x Phoenixes, 35 Water Elementals, 10 Death Knights... no Fortifications, no hero, no machines...
I still can't win!!
I know in your earlier message, You said not to go with Treants... as well not to upgrade certain units... With that said, keep in mind, I played through everything in this message before I read your message.
So I have Ancient Treants, I'll try using them.
I'm trying to build up a strategy, where the Ancient try and Pin Down the Phoenix with the Entangled attack, and than DIG in the roots and keep him enforced with Endurance, from both the Druid and the Hero... while the rest attack the Water elementals and Death Knights... but that Phoenix seems to go first every time! I'm thinking though, If I can manage to finally destroy Phoenix as the Last Unit standing of defenders, it will not Revive?? IDK! just a guess, but does Revive have a limit? does it only revive if other creatures in battle? Or does it only revive once? Som one please explain these Phoenixes to me, though I will try looking them up on WIki! I need to mix around some artifacts and see if I can't get a better ini out the gate vs these guys!! Find away to go first, or just wait til I build up my Ancient T's and Dragon counts!
Meanwhile, my INCOME seems to SUCK, until I get Estates on Leadership for both, to gain more economy. Until than, recruitement IS VERY slow. Though I have the Green Dragon, if I spare any recruitement, and save up to improve the Dragon Alter, and get Emerald Dragons, would be SO much better I think!! Once I can take this town, my economy will improve a little!! And MORE mines. My area doesn't seem to have a lot of Gold Mines.
At this point, what would you suggest?? Hopefully I see some more messages before I get too far in again!! I can't imagine taking Amel til I build up a strategy though!
edited...Oh my... so I did do some reading. Yes, the Phoenix Revive is limited to only ONCE per battle, if your unaware. Still, 5x more Phoenixes will be tough. If I can entangle a second time, before he flies off, I'll have chance. Meanwhile... Water elemental will be casting damaging frost against me, Ice Bolt, or Winter Ring! Maybe I can hit him with Lightning? idk!
Death knight having chance to strike down half any stack of mine it attacks, though only 10 of him, has me worried.
So... I need manipulate my Arti's, get as much Dragons and Ancients to Direal as I can, and figure out the proper Placement for these Phoenixes... who have Speed of 10, and ini of 19!
Thankfully their Neutral.. and I'm against the AI... so I can save, to keep trying the fight, find out what works, wash, rinse... and repeat, from each load... til I CONQUER Amel-Ishkun!

I run 5.5, note.

Yes.

I play Sylvan most of the time now. I vehemently disagree with the other poster, I find Treants, esp. the Ancient ones, to be a vital component of my army on anything other than the easiest of maps. I might not buy them until after I get dragons (that decision depends on what is guarding my mines), but I will need them. Against tough non-shooters they are essential to minimize losses to your other troops.
Many games I don't even buy Dancers or Unicorns (or their dwellings) in the beginning. They simply tend to die in droves, and I usually cannot afford them unless there are tons of gold mines (or gold artifacts) around. In some really tough battles (where I don't have Resurrect or Regeneration) my dragons might remain on the sidelines. Likewise Savage Treants are a luxury you usually cannot afford (by the time they have activated their special and are ready to wade into the fray the battle is usually over for me).
Make sure you upgrade to Dryads (so you can rezz both the Treants and themselves), and Tactics will likely be necessary as well (since fast fliers like your Phoenixes might be able to hit your shooters before the Treants can get in position to defend them-you can also put them into Defend/Take Roots one turn earlier). You can use single stacks of Dryads to block them from hitting your shooters right off the bat (but take care to mind the angles of 2 hex attacks from the various dragons, can take out your shooters even if the Treants are in position).
Tactics will also allow your unupgraded Green Dragons to hit enemy shooters on their first turns.
As you might be able to tell, I find Offense & Light Magic to be essential. Oh, Summoning gives you some perks, but overall is an inferior school. I will typically try to go with the following primaries, in order:
Avenger (only available for Rangers)
Offense
Light Magic
Logistics
Luck
Enlightenment (mainly for Swift Mind-again note I use the 5.5 mod)
With 5.5 you can have 8 primaries-I'll typically save any Shatters for when it is time to deal with enemy heroes (starting with Shatter Dark if an evil race is nearby, Shatter Light if good). Defense and one final slot is left, maybe Leadership (tho I usually don't want an extra skill which is low on my priority list until most everything else has been maxed out, so I don't get faced with poor choices for secondaries).

My recommendation is based on 3.1 multiplayer. I do not know if treant/dragon cost requirements are different in 5.5 but if not you have literally no reason to build treants over dragons in week 2. After that it's fair game.
Also note that 3.1 does not feature shatters for non-stronghold factions so your experience might be a little different.
