Sander's Folly - where have I goofed? Purple DEMOLISHES me.
So, since I got no map recommendations here (;< I decided to give Sander's Folly a go. Such a hyped map, I thought, fine, I'll just read a mini novel this time.
But my reading session was rudely interrupted by the purple player. I mean, yes, *I* opened the gate after I came back from the wizard trial+the town above with quests, but I thought I shouldn't wait any longer than necessary. I took one town, beat the Bron hero, and then... suddenly Styg.
Suddenly Styg means, I'm slapped in the face with an army of:
- 13 rust dragons (what, how do I even??)
- 23 hydras (13 upgraded)
- 202 dragon flies, 271 lizards, 505 gnolls (whatever)
What have I done wrong? I mean, I have one measly giant at this point in time, granted I built them late-ish, but that's cause I went for the genies (got 60, that includes the weekly dwelling) and nagas (22) in two towns. I'd have maybe 4 or so if I went the other route. Giants. Not titans. Not enough gems for an upgrade.
I'm like a month away from the mages guild in the upper town (and it does NOT give me Town Portal, I checked ._.).
What am I supposed to do? Or rather - what have I done wrong? Am I too slow? Am I too fast? That army is completely unbeatable and he'll keep on producing the dragons while my hero would be stuck in an exp-less land. I got no resurrection, no force field, no way to level up to get more mana even if I had those.
I done goofed. But I dunno where. Help? ;(
PS. According to the tavern Tan has a stronger army than this. And tan roams Purple's area freely too so I suppose I'd have to face them both at once, too. Very confused. I know I suck, but I didn't think I sucked THAT much D:
Thanks...

I haven't played this in years but I remember it's possible to rush the AIs. Remember you don't have to buy everything; 400 Gremlins will probably die as fast as 1 Gremlin. It might be better to concentrate on the big guns.
Purple AI is locked away, the only AI that may invade is Tan (by boat), so technically you can take your time and only fight Purple when you feel ready.
Anyhow, fighting Purple should be easy with 'Blind', especially if you can get your hands on 'Resurrection'. If you're afraid of Tan, dig up holes all the way along your coast, then you can go fight him on your own terms

Hey. I don't know why, but my purple wasn't locked at all. Tan came to purple's shores and left boats with which both of them could come to my little kingdom Teal as well didn't mind paying a visit.
Had I had resurrection and TP, I'd have managed, and I did... after I went to the editor and set those spells to appear in the town where they could. So not cheating, just removing the RNG factor
Thanks for the response nonetheless, appreciated

In that case, digging holes all the way along your shore will prevent both of them from landing with boats

That is one tricky trick... And I thought I knew this game inside and out by now
But that aside, I do think TP and Resurrection shouldn't be left to the RNGesus to decide. Way too vital. But a very nice map overall.

I am playing it right now, and is possible to get titans (not giants, titans) month 2 week 1. It helps playing it in Era/wog with mod "see events" as there is precisely one event near your shipyard giving big artifacts, 15k exp, gold and 15 gems. Then tan landed at optimal moment and with snowty army so I stole his boat, thus this may depend on his moves too.
Indeed it depends a lot on RNG but why not, we have enough maps out there where if you play perfectly, every pile, monster and spell is put to boost score.
Great map btw, I almost forgot how good and inspired was Corribus at this job.

In my first attempt I did not pick up the shoreline resources so I got bottle-necked on resources really bad. Never found that event though, not the first not the second attempt
Not a fan of RNG though, the map is incomparably more doable with Resurrection and TP than without I'm not a good enough player to win everything in the harshest conditions ;<
Salamandre, I'm curious, are you frequenting map4heroes too? What's your nickname there? You remind me of another fellow from over there, but I don't want to guess like a moron

2nd hero ?
I've just conquered tan's island but am seriously considering raising another main hero. I don't like Sander's skills at all, the best I can do is wisdom, ballistic (default), air, fire, intelligence and sorcery. No tactic, earth, water, archery, pathfinding, logistic etc.. He is good for rushing tan early game but I think later on he will be very weak.
So I wonder is there any check point later in the game which Sander is required to pass ? Or I can just hire, say, Mephala, and play normaly till the end ?

You can check Quest Guards and Seer Huts if they required to visit by Sander or any hero from your banner.

I've just finished the map. Here are some notes :
-It's actually easier if you take the resources on the coast as fast as possible and let tan attacks you early on, because that will thin their armies, and they don't have any spell, so Sander can kill them easily on magic field with mass slow and lightning.
-There's a event near the enchanter island which gives 15k exp. I used it to train Mephala. This map can be completed without Sander. His skills suck and I had to choose between Eagle eyes and Mysticism at one point.
-Tan will leave boats near purple and purle will also come after you at the coast. In my case he came with 3 Rust dragons right after I rushed tan. That means you can rush purple too. I ended up rushing fortress and inferno before taking the test. Kind of messing up the story a little bit.
-In my map, there's a magic shrine in the center of the map which teaches Summon boat. It made the whole underground lake puzzle, water walk, speculum etc... irrelevant.
-If you have town portal, you can go to your starting area and use the market for some mercuries, and mark some mines in underground.
-Mephala proved to be too strong in final fight.
Overall I think it's a good map with very good story, but some minor details can be improved.

Good Evening
I played this map long time ago and it was great. However it is easy to get spoiled in the story because of the tavern info. Therefore, you can predict who is villain or the plot twist.... To fix this maybe there should be enemy decoy hero with large army to hide this info from tavern. Of course he should be locked somewhere...

I've got a question: is that 15000 Gold and Buckler of the Gnoll King the Treasure Trove? If so, that's far less than I expected.

No. The event near your shipyard that gives good artifacts, 15k exp,
lots of gold and 15 gems is by the island with the Enchanter's Dwellings that also has the Seer's Hut where you complete the Test of Wizardry. You found a different event (that I recall being a lot farther from your shipyard).
