Proverbs and thoughts from all over the world
Hi everyone.
Since HC is a worldwide fan community, I propose this thread to tighten ties between the members, where everybody is invited to give one or more proverbs, quotes, or adages that he/she finds relevant from his country/culture/language or from a country/culture/language he/she likes or is fond of, giving the origin, and the meaning (especially if it's not easily understadable).
You may also give philosophical thoughts or beautiful words that bear special sense to you from a book, an author... etc.

Arabic proverb, accentuating God's omniscience.

These are some of my favorite Finnish proverbs, with my best efforts to translate:
"A madman does a lot of work, a wise man gets away with less"
"What you learn without joy, you forget without sorrow"
"Who reaches for the spruce, will fall into the juniper" (think "don't bite off more than you can chew"). Not something I say a lot in everyday speech (it sounds a bit too fancy and unnatural), but it describes a part of typical Finnish mentality (or at least mine) quite well (i.e. rather settling with less than taking the risk of setting the bar too high). Plus I like the forest theme .
"Working won't rid you of work" (i.e. there's always more work to do once you finish) This was a bit difficult to get right in English, the literal translation (preserving the grammatical structure, which gives the snappiness of the original) is something like "Not work by working stops", but it sounds like Yoda-talk in English. There are many possible variations like "Worrying won't rid you of troubles", "Sleeping won't rid you of dreams" or "Eating won't rid you of hunger", it's a bit like a template that lets you tailor it to your needs, indeed many Finnish figures of speech are like that.
"Fits like a fist fits into an eye" (Of something that seems appropriate given the circumstances, possibly but not necessarily meant sarcastically. The implication of violence gives it a bit more of a punch (pun intended) than more neutral variations like "Fits like a nose fits a face").

I like the one about work, best to not overwhelm oneself with it. Finnish is indeed very different from English, but the meanings of your translations are clear. Thanks for detailed explanations.

"Mind reigns, strength rolls logs"; I think the meaning is pretty obvious.

"A matina nun ne vogghiu e a sera spardu l'ogghiu" or for the common folk outside Sicily "In the morning i don't want to and in the evening i waste oil."
"Better to have a day like a lion than a hundred like a sheep" or "Meglio un giorno da leone che cento da pecora" I know the connotations of this one, but this phrase wasn't exclusive to that guy.

Rather an expression than a proverb but I really love this sarcastic one:
"Now, all we need is 3 horseshoes and a horse."
Used when someone is overconfident about the future outcome of a process and you have to remind him a lot more needs to be done or owned to reach the end goal.
