Serious PC Warning?
Today has brought something new.
I received on my home-phone (I screen calls) a *warning* from MS saying "Your Computer is generating serious warnings" and then asking me to pick-up and hit #1 to talk to an "MS Engineer."
Good grief how many people fall for such tactics.
For the record, I looked up the scam and in one instance at least it is thought to come from India.

Haha yeah get a few of those on my pc, but it's only annoying on my phone, but a phone or pc would automatically power down if there is some serious threat, not randomly flash the screen beeping.

As for intent IDK but like any scam it likely comes in various forms. i.e. trying to get folks to give info (without thinking = alarm-stuff) or verifying someone still has a certain number. On a land-line/phone-only, you cannot get a virus but the PC Phones...someone else needs to answer that one.

I've been getting the same scam too, three times this year so far. But the last time they called, I told the guy that he should be ashamed of himself, and I haven't heard from them since.

There should be some law against these rip-offs. I once read, out of curiosity the feedback of some "get rich instantly by doing nothing" (but by small deposit of course). I read the comments and they where angry of course. Sometimes, we say, well they deserved that for falling for that low trick but is really okay to market any bullsnow that you can imagine? People are pissed of this and if you don't have all add blockers, anti-virus programs, harmfull site closers, identify apps/downloads you are screwed. I haven't heard it but I deffinetly want app on my phone that blocks every phone seller calls, marketing, static queries and all the snow what comes with it. I could take new secret number but do I want that hasle...
Hotmail got a problem years ago with flooding junk mail that you could not prevent. Then they added garbage mail and you can add new trash to go straight away to garbage pile. Now, would it be great that you could do that to unwanted phone calls. Make a law, that only "regitered" numbers can dial selling calls and the people who don't wan't order anything by phone can add themself on "not gonna buy list" or download an app.
Not, that I got normally that angry about it but it's annoying, stupid, poitless, time comsuming and totally out of hands. Recently, it has gotten quite rare but one time, I got two phone calls per day, for quite long period. Older people here says, they don't answer unknown numbers, it should not be like that. Fault is not in the 15 years old teenager who try sell me socks on the phone, it's failed system. /rant_off

My phone has a block feature where you can put numbers on automatic hang-up/delete message. Never used it so dunno all the nuances.

Did he try to pass himself off as being with MS?
@Homer
I hear you and it's actually worse than what you describe.
Do you know that people can <clears throat> work for a charity or fundraising-org of some sort and the organization - get this - BY LAW can legally dupe people for most of the collected money!...as long as e.g. 10% actually goes to whatever the targeted need? How about that man! Governments sanction these rip-offs and oh yes...they sooo care about the people.

Not really, it's a scam. When you answer the call, they will ask you to visit a certain website or install some software so they can monitor your PC remotely and fix the problem for you. In the mean time, they're installing malware/spyware, fishing for your personal info (especially credit card info, but also usernames/passwords) so they can make money off of it.
I was never called, fortunately.

That because you have shown up your e-mail, phone-number, IP - number, and so on, somewhere in the Global Network, where is a LOT of pity guys that is thinking that they is free to harm any peoples that they want, and they harming a helpless lamer users - such as frostysh, due to their absolute inability to harm something more tough.
To prevent such fails in the future you need - Tor Bundle Browser, It is can work on Mac OS, Windows OS, Linux OS, and even more ... It is an easy, a minimal protection that you can obtain by just one CLICK
Do not be aside of the modern FREE, protection for the users of the global Network against scums! Just try it, you will lose nothing if you will try it, if you will dislike just delete it by ONE CLICK!

frostysh I believe it's not the first time you are being told: could you please stop image-spamming in every single post you make?
And BTW Tor is being used by pedophiles and terrorists, if you want to share your computer with these guys, just listen to frostysh.

My image is small and it is useful to describe the interface of the Tor Bundle Browser

Pedophilia guys and terrorists using knives too, so you can stop using the knives in your kitchen to avoid a supporting the violence.
Tor Network is a FREE, as the Global Network is, if there will be no Tor, I have no doubts the pedophilia guys and terrorist will create something like it for their own purposes.
Tor as the any other tool, can be used for a good, or for a bad purpose.

You don't know what you are talking about and are promoting something that can harm yourself and others. Listen carefully, on TOR, when you go on a website, instead of directly accessing the website server your signal passes through plenty other computers. These computers belong to other people connected to TOR. As such, what will be seen is the IP and MAC of the last computer by which the signal passed. So if it's a nutthead doing illegal stuff on TOR and by misfortune your computer is the last of the chain, the authorities will see your MAC and your IP and guess who's going to pay for something he didn't do!!

1) I have always thought - that only some special Machines, with some special equipment can be as Tor Exit Node - i.e. plz.messwithme.us
2) In my case, using my internet connection for someone else will be not a very good idea . Especially if this someone do not want to wait a 20 minute to download a singe MB of the information .
3) If I are NOT using tor, Scum-Software can easily use my PC for a spreading yourself, for a spamming someone and then my IP will be blacklisted in the some Resources without my fault!

We already established the browser you are using doesn't work with various stuff such as HCM's.
You may believe in this case the "use this or else" is true, but in my opinion fear mongering is unlikely to be a good argument, it is e.g. the same type of argument the OP is about (your computer is in trouble, let us "help" you).

You are totally wrong, not the browser, not the one of browser programs, but the configuration of the TBB - if you will let the Privacy and Security Setting on the Low (Default) level, you will obtain the same functionality as your standard browser but with a MUCH better protection from the scums.
And HCM - will work then.

Nonsense.
1) mr. markkur have no fear of the mongering, and what now? - His personal data, such as phone number stolen by a automatic program - a bot, that can scan a thousands and thousands stuff for such information. - If he have the Tor - something like that may never happens.
2) It is a good argument - Tor Bundle Browser, is a free, and guaranty a decent level of a protection against scums - one click to download it, use it, and no further mumbling . I am joking, but the main thing is next - Tor is rocks!
P.S. What the hell "OP" is?

You don't see how your argument is no different from the scammers in the OP? I don't really think I can explain it any different than I already did, I can try to simplify:
1) Your computer is in trouble.
2) Do this.
In my opinion that is the same chain of logic used by the scammers in the OP as well as yourself. The reason I call it fear mongering, is because of "1)".
Also if you don't know the term fear mongering I suggest you look it up.

1) Tor is a crypted network - that is means, the anyone who inside of this network is a not very target for the cyber-criminals, they need first to do "mumbo-jumbo" before they can mess with your private data.
And it almost impossible quest for the Automatic Scummer Programs.
So if you are in the Tor, IT is VERY unlikely that you will become a victim of some random searching/hacking.
Of course if you are target for the guys that have a toys like this one :
ECHELON
Or something like this :
As Russia Insulates Itself from Human Rights Bodies, State Surveillance Decision Looms
So, too sad for you then...
2) The Tor is right what mr markkur is need for! It will give a decent level of protection for mr markkur against a scums.
I do not know what the hell is "OP" means. And yeah, I have a hell no idea what a "mongering" means too , me poor English
